Decemeber Reading Thread: How Are You Finishing Off The Year

Yesterday I finished Crossroads of Twilight, I found it understandable for long-time fans to be upset with the book since nothing really seem to happen until the last chapters for a few characters. In fact I got frustrated about three-quarters of the way through. However I got through in about the same amount of time as the other WoT books.

Today I finished my on again, off again book on a particular event in Adventist history, Angry Saints by George R. Knight.

Tomorrow I begin The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston with Mario Spezi.

I enjoyed Blackout by Mira Grant for what it is, a nice read with a quick pace. I was somewhat disappointed at the end, I guess I expected more detail or something less anticlimactic.

I have started rereading Towers of Midnight. With the last WoT book coming out in a few weeks, I feel the need to reread at least the previous book. If I had the time, if I could read at the pace I used to before the twins, I'd reread the whole series one more time. Given that I don't, I'll settle for just ToM

I'm currently making my way through Malice, by John Gwynne. I'm not quite sure why I'm enjoying it - there isn't one single element I can point out that would likely entice readers to it, and more than one- clunky dialogue, massively unsubtle exposition early on, it's not exactly veering far from the old-school fantasy blueprint so far - that might put people off, and yet after some early misgivings it works.

It's a strange one, somehow trying to occupy a middle ground between the comfortable worn slippers of Feist at his early best and the edgy facial piercings of Bakker's double-apocalyptic gloom. And yet it's not falling between two stools, for the most part (there are occasional moments where the make-believe aspects are just a bit too simplistic for the world) it's making it work.

About a third of the way in so far, so there's still time for it to go either very wrong or very right. But I'm liking it so far.

Finished COLD DAYS by Jim Butcher, and I thought it was an okay read, nothing special. I am glad I was able to check it out from the local library because I wouldn't have read it otherwise.

Reading STAR WARS: DARTH PLAGUEIS by James Luceno for the fourth time. This book is definitely the best book I read this year that was published in 2012.

I've been on a medical drama kick, so I read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, as well as The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I picked up Warbreaker by Sanderson at the library so I guess that's next. And I'm rereading LotR.

At the tail end of my Alatriste kick, with Pirates of the Levant. Also, simultaneously, just finished Sharpe's Eagle, and am on to Sharpe's Gold. It's been a long bloody time since I read all of his adventures up to Waterloo (I have yet to pick up the prequels set in India), but reading about Alatriste made me miss that tall rogue named Sharpe.

Just about to finish my Abercrombie reread, almost through the Heroes.

Then, with the pending release of the finale to WOT, I'm debating a full re-read of the series. I feel like shouting, "Cover Me! I'm going in!"

I am currently reading the final book of Obsidian and Blood by Alliette de Bodard, with the incredibly long title of Master of the House of Darts. I am also working on Mort in my Pratchett reread. Then it is on to Rise of Ransom City.

I just finished the first 2 books on the night angel trilogy! Hoping 2 finish the final book beyond the shadows! loving the series so far. I bought the first book in the Wheel of time a few months back but realized its going to take a lot work to finish it! So i decided not to read. Is it worth the time reading 13 books it.I`m hoping To read Prince of thorns and King of thorns by Mark Lawrence! And Hopefully start either one of Daniel Abrahams series!

I loved Prince of Thorns. I've got Daniel Abrahams books on my to-read-pile, but I'm not likely to get around to 'em anytime soon. :(

Finished Cold Days in record time. I don't know why I do that because it's not like I get a reward for reading Butcher books fast. I just have to wait another year!

Also finished The Dark History of the Roman Emperors by Michael Kerrigan. It's a very pretty book and interesting for all the salacious bits but I'm not sure how I feel about it. School has ruined me for wanting to see sources but I'm not sure how that works with history books. My rational side tells me that at some point people should just be able if they have the knowledge but the other part says I want to know where this information is coming from. It was interesting but I don't know if what I read has any basis on fact. I probably should have looked the author up first and if he is someone with big shiny credentials in ancient history it's probably safe to assume he knows what he's talking about. There were also a lot of copy issues with the book. However, having said all that, I bought it on sale, it was a quick read, and it was probably worth it for the artwork alone.

Now I'm re-reading The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon before I get to The Prisoner of Heaven.

Well, for me A Memory of Light is my most anticipated book for quite a while, and likely ever. So, when my copy showed up yesterday, it's no surprise that put other books on hold and am reading it now. I wish my schedule would allow me to read straight through, but that won't work out. It'll probably take me a week - it's not a short book.

My most anticipated book, Red Country, has been read. I also finished Anno Dracula. So awesome! Now I'm going to read Walking Beauty by Paul Witcover and maybe do a reread of Prince of Thorns. Beyond that, I still need to read The Stress of Her Regard (love Tim Powers, how does this one compare to Anubis Gates?).

I finished I am not myself these days about a drag queen's romance with a male escort. It was very captivating and different from what I usually read.

I have decided to read The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan next. Looking forward too it.
