Known world map

I was just wondering why we still use the 'speculative world map' (see here http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/File:Map_of_Ice_and_Fire.jpg) on the wiki. when there is a proper map of the known world in 'Lands of ice and fire' which has been co-created and authenticated by GRRM as the official world map which differs significantly from this one.

You can't use the maps themselves for legal reasons. Theoretically you can use reproductions of the map with no problem (like the hundreds out there which reproduce the book maps, as long as they are not trying to make money out of them), but I believe we were waiting for Ran to give us the okay, to ensure the board and the wiki are not treading on Random House's toes.

There is a blank version of the world map here, but I would not use it on the wiki until Ran says it is okay to do so.

Ah. Very recently added. Didn't realize.

Hrm... well, I will say, at that low resolution and relative lack of detail, it may be all right. I shall contact RH and get their opinion on it, however.

Interesting. That's actually one of mine (well, actually based on the outline map someone on Cartographer's Guild created) that I threw together for the Westeros: Total War forum for the group that wants to extend the campaign map to include Essos (seeing the size and scale of it, they realised the futility of that). I definitely didn't give anyone permission to use it anywhere else.

Werthed, I noticed that your map is also being used on the Ice and Fire wikia. I presume you released it; under which license?

You are also using a number of coat of arms I made for our wiki. That is allowed if you state where you got it.

Under the anyone-can-use-it-if-they-want license. Further use of the map (for regional purposes) is on hold untl Ran reports back on Random House's view on it. Since they gave Jonathan Roberts permission to republish the actual maps themselves on his blog, I think these kind of fairly primitive fan maps should be okay with them, but we haven't heard yet.

I wasn't aware of this (the I&F Wikia only recently took off again, as part of an initiative launched by the Wikia company itself) and have contacted the person who uploaded them to tell him to go back and put the correct notification on them.

So, has anything changed since March 15th? I can see that this map http://awoiaf.wester...fIceandFire.png is now showing on the World Map section of the Wiki.

Now, shouldn't the Westeros, Essos and Sothoryos maps be changed as well? http://awoiaf.wester...ortal:Geography

Mainly to show the true shape of The Summer Islands, which we now know for sure :) and the eastern coast of Sothoryos too :P

BTW: Where/When is Sothoryos spelled Sothoros in the books?

http://awoiaf.wester...ex.php/Sothoros

Sorry if this has been already asked

EDIT: Oh, nevermind, found the topic where it is discussed :P
