The Frosted King
Maybe all that chest thumping bravado is all a cover to mask deep seated self esteem issues, since they're literally the backwater nobody wants anything to do with?Have we seen or heard of ANY island/mainland matches five books in? Jon Snows Ghost
The Iron Born remind me of someone who has champagne taste but on a kool-aid budget.
Northern Nomad
Maybe that is why they are hungrey for conquest, because for the last 300 years, they have not been as importent as before. But i think the fact that we don't see any iron/mainland macthes, is because they don't want to mix with the "weeklings of the greenlands". Dolorous Nedd
All I can say in on my second reading I hate the Iron Born more than I did the first time. That's saying a lot since I detested them the first time.It amazes me how they view compassion as being some terrible weakness. I would have personally hunted them down one by one (the evil ones like most of the Greyjoys) if I had been alive back then and it was a real world. :lol:To answer the question posted...I think they are just awful people who think the world owes them something. The Frost Wolf
Guys, guys, guys. When we say "Ironborn" what we mean is the old generation: Balon, Victarion, etc. etc. But what's that coming over Sea Dragon Point? Its only Asha, Qarl the Maid and Tris Botley. Not to mention The Reader! These guys are the NEW and IMPROVED generation of Ironborn. They socialise with greenlanders and are not as racist as the last lot. I think that's an improvement. What makes me laugh is the fact that they are the bitches of Westeros, poorest region and no income except for "reaving" yet they still have a bigger ego than Kanye West? They'd kill their guidance councillor.

Dolorous Nedd
They ironborn noble houses are no more murderous than the rest of Westeros noble houses.I don't recall the Starks going out and raping and pillaging towns full of innocent people. I just hate the way the Iron Born think it's perfectly ok to behave like barbarians.

Fire Eater
Have we seen or heard of ANY island/mainland matches five books in?Ser Harras Harlaw's mother was a Serrett from the Westerlands while Lord Quellon Greyjoy's third wife was a Piper from the riverlands. They aren't averse to marrying women from the greenlands, but I think they are averse to marrying their daughters off to men from the greenlands. King.In.Yellow
The Ironborn read like some people back in the old country. Yes, of course we're the backwater of the world, BUT WE ARE IRONBORN! WAKKA WAKKA!
Peter George Stewart
The Ironborn represent the predatory strategy by human beings. "We do now sow" - they only take what others produce, they only reap. That strategy is always possible, but it does require you to view other human beings as less than human so you don't feel bad when you steal from them and kill them. Also, it doesn't make any sense to be a predator on the strong, predators always prey on the weak, and generally with hit and run tactics. So their attitude is fundamentally insecure. They act like big men, but they know deep inside that they are cowards who prey on the weak.

They call the Crannogmen craven because of the sniper type attacks they like to employ. The Ironborn launch surprise attacks on innocent people who aren't prepared for it and consider it a great victory when they win. The Crannogmen launch effective small scale attacks on people they know are threatening them (the Ironborn in this case) and the Ironborn view them with disgust. It almost seems the Ironborn are jealous because they have been outsmarted. The way the Crannogmen fight them is the only strategy that can work given the circumstances outlined in the books. The Ironborn are like a cancer that need to be surgically removed.
