aurane waters (TWoW spoiler)

Aurane is fodder for Victarion/Tyrion/Dany to destroy. I think he or Salla are a delivery device for the riches (Kraken Horn and Valyrian axe) of the weakly defended Claw Isle to make their way into Victarion's hands, maybe Tyrion if it's a particularly small axe. Aurane's flagship is the Lord Tywin, tell me that's not begging for a torching by Tyrion.

War galleys were pretty fast, esp. in short run - they have more oars (and oarsmen) than cargo ships, are sleeker and built for tactical maneuvers.

However they are manpower intensive and in real world ended because they cannot hope to match firepower of sailships - they had to be as light as possible and thus cannot carry too many guns, both for weight and structural reasons. However in ASOIAF world without gunpowder weapons, dromonds would rule.

So I agree, as pirate ships they are sub-optimal, but not because of the speed ;)

i stand corrected. how about their maneuverability?

War galleys were pretty maneuvrable - more so than sailships that pushed them out. While sailship would have to rely on wind, well trained galley crew can turn very quickly using oars (one side rows forward, another backwards), it can accelerate quickly and deliver a fast blow (you would note that rowing ships often had rams, sailships mostly not, because they won't be able to deliver punch enough).

The maneuvrability came of course at a price - and one of usual tactics how to reduce enemy combat worth was to break his oars.

I would looooove that poetic justice. Tyrion needs to bring down Lord Tywin forsure. EDIT: I do think Aurane Waters is way more formidable than you give him credit for, though.

Where was there mention of a kraken horn and a valyrian axe on crackclaw point

When Davos is brought out of the dungeon on Dragonstone, which I believe would have been A storm of Swords. Saladar Saan and the deuch who's name I can't remember wanted to raid the isles of the Stormlands to "teach obedience" and gain coin to hire sellswords. San mentions a kraken horn when he is pushes the raiding to Davos.

I'm nearly certain a quentyn/aurane alliance isn't on the cards. I'll bet a grand on it.

lol, me too

I'd like to second that bet, it would be the most unlikely alliance to happen. lol.

Funny coincidence, I've just watched "Weekend at Bernie's" again and... what odds are we talking here?

  • 4 weeks later...

I kind of like to think that Aurane is in bed with the Tyrells (and maybe literally with the Knight of Flowers) and that Lady Olenna and Aurane are biding their time and waiting for Dany. This could just be wishful thinking, but Tyrells have always been Targ loyalists, and seem pretty wise to wait for a dragon to show up in Westeros considering how crazy it is. And if Martells side with Aegon this will form even more motivation for the Tyrells to go with Dany. It also seems like a Tyrell/Lannister feud is inevitable in tWoW, so I think Lady Olenna or Willas has been cooking up a Plan B for when the shit hits the fan.

As for why Aurane would be with the Tyrells, maybe he likes it the butt from Loras, or he secretly allied Lady Olenna while he was at Court and jumped the gun a little early seperating from the Lannisters.

It was so obvious after reading this that it was Aurane Waters. "He styles himself the 'Lord of the Waters'." Its almost too much

I don't think GRRM was trying to hide that from us. The question becomes what's his plan and what are his motives.?

What are the possibilities for The Bastard of Driftmark?

1) He could just be out for himself. Being a pirate king with a fleet of warships sounds like a pretty good deal. He was only a sell sail even when he fought for Stannis. If this is the case I can see him selling his services to Aegon or Dany in the near future.

2) He could be a Stannis ally. The sliver seahorse sigil was seen with Stannis in the north. But in truth I think this is the most unlikely because he's a Bastard and why the heck would he post up in Torture's Deep?

3) He's been working with Varys. Making off with a war fleet doesn't seem like a spur of the moment thing. This must have been in the works and this would explain his position in the Stepstones. I forget do we know how Aegon was able to cross the narrow sea?

4) He made a deal with the Tyrells. There is something fishy about his story about Loras and Dragonstone. It's possible he's prepared to aide them against the Ironborn and whoever else in exchange for a powerful Lordship, maybe even Dragonstone itself.

What's your guess?

Plus....he looks like Rhegar and is therefore stupid :P

Hey come on now, just because he looks like a guy who stupid doesn't mean that he will be stupid as well.

ETA : Although I guess Jon does look like Ned, and Renly does look like Robert and all the Freys tend to look alike . . . alright you could be on to something there.

I'm pretty sure he has 10 war dromonds, 1 of them the Lord Tywin having like 500 oars.

This is partially correct:

1. Lord Tywin 6. Queen Margaery

2. Sweet Cersei 7. Golden Rose

3. Brave Joffery 8. Lord Renly

4. Lady Johanna 9. Lady Olenna

5. Lioness 10. Princess Myrcella

However, as Master of Ships, he may have more warships in his fleet. Fewer than a dozen warships survived the Battle of the Black Water: King Robert's Hammer, Lionstar, Lady Lyanna, Seaswift, and Boldwind escorted Myrcella to Dorne and were not part of the battle. All told, Waters may have 20+ warships in his fleet.

Weel if Aurane Waters is in with the Tyrells, he better get out of Loras's bed and get to the reach because the Iron born are moving in.

Now that they have Dragonstone, the Redwyne fleet is theoretically free to return to the Reach. They apparently have 200 warships so that should be enough to hold Euron at bay. Remember that Euron sent a good portion of his fleet with Vic. Now that the Tyrells are gaining control of KL the threat from the East seems just as large. It might make sense to leave the Lord of the Waters on the Stepstones.
