Gregor Clegane ... Is alive? not undead, living and breathing.

I would imagine good armor would entail some sort of latches to secure a helm. Imagine losing one's helm in the midst of battle, after being struck in the back of the head, or tumbling off a horse.

There are multiple ways that this was accomplished. But one way to do this with plate armor would be to attach a gorget to the helmet. Depending on how the gorget was fastened and how big it was, it could be used to help keep the helm on.

A good example (15th century - late medieval):

And here's an example of a gorget by itself:

Gregor Clegane was poisoned by Oberyn Martell with thickened basalisk venom. He was taken to the Black Cells where he reportedly screamed for days. We know the venom was thickened which meant it travelled through the body slower, killing the individual slower. Qyburn was working on him.

Jamie Lannisters hand was removed by the Brave Companions. It got infected on the journey to Harrenhall. Infection was very dangerous in a medieval, unadvanced setting like ASoIaF - medical care was astoundingly bad. Yet Qyburn managed to treat the stump, and save Jamies arm. Jamie was left screaming, and despite stopping screaming, he was in agony for weeks afterward.

Tywin told the Martells that Gregor had died, and managed to pin anything offending Dorne down to him, keep in mind a decapitated dwarf who was described as having "an abnormally large head" was given to Cersei as Tyrion. They couldent risk sending it with the flesh on, as it didnt look like Gregor. So they boiled it, said it was Gregors. When the Martells recieved it they said it was mishapen, but it was too big to belong to anyone except Gregor.

Gregor was taken to the Black Cells by Qyburn. Days later Cerseis undefeatable champion, standing 8 foot tall and in armor no man save the mountain could lift emerges into daylight. Vowing not to speak or remove his helm until Cersei is free.

Qyburn could have done something simliar to Jamie, and saved Gregor from infection. The poison was thickened, it spread slowly as we are told by Pycelle. The reason Gregor wont remove his helm or speak, is because Dorne would then realise Tywin and the Lannisters lied about Gregors head, take offense and maybe side with the Lannisters enemies.

I've seen speculation that the head was that of a dwarf or a giant. But right after the head of Brienne's dwarf is presented to Cersei Qyburn tells her the skull for Dorne is ready, so it wasn't the skull of Brienne's dwarf. And at that time, we're only told aboutthe head of BBrienne's dwarf and an ugly child having been presented to Cersei. Since the flesh had to be boiled from it, it wasn't a giant's skull. All the flesh eould have rotted off a dug up giant's skull south ofvthe Neck.

I just can't wait until the helmet gets knocked off somehow, everyone sees what is underneath - Gregor, Nothing, Joffery's head, whatever else people have come up with idk - and the whole of kings landing just looses their minds. Its going to be some great reading

How does he keep the helm on?

Yea, exactly what I thought :D

Robert Strong must have a head. If Robert Strong is Gregor, he has Gregor's head and the skull was a lie.

If Qyburn stitched another head on, then it's questionable whether it would still be Gregor.

Or, it's just someone else.

We don't know yet.

Although the helm could be held in place, I think it would be fairly onvious to people who saw it up close that there was no head inside. It wouldn't move the same.
