[BOOK SPOILERS] Nitpick without repercussion?

Recommended Posts

Yes, Jaime's lines!!! HOW CAN YOU TAKE THAT OUT!!!

I don't know what you're talking about Orell. In the books, he died in the first scene he appeared. Jon killed him.

Talisa needs to die. It is known.

Did he? Well, what's the warg-guy called in the books then? I can't remember.

This is what makes things like all the Ramsay torture porn scenes or the Pod the Sex God 'storyline' so utterly frustrating in retrospect.

Karstark tells Robb he lost the war as soon as he married Talisa. Why? How does that change his strategic situation? With the minutes used up by those useless scenes, we could have seen the Freys storming off in a rage. We could have heard how he has ostracized one of his most powerful allies for the sake of a pretty face. We could have established the Freys as allies of Robb Stark, not a neutral party that he has directly insulted.

The only 'Unsullied' I interact with on a regular basis is my mom. Needless to say, she was quite clueless as to how Robb, who was winning every battle last scene, is now suddenly losing the war.

Yep.

Instead of Ros, Pod and whores, Bronn and whores, and now, unbelievably Theon and whores, the 111th Varys and LF tweaking each other scenes, we might have had (a) Freys leaving Robb's army, (B) a few Northern bannermen introduced who will travel to the RW.

Or, even the Freys themselves back at the Twins commiserating on how they were betrayed, something to remind the viewer that marrying Talisa cost Robb thousands and thousands of soldiers.

This especially I agree with. Outside of Robb and Catelyn, we don't know these people who are about to die. They will be extras, nameless faces who represent the 'northern lords', the only named one left to us being Roose Bolton. We don't know the perpetrators, either. They didn't fight and die for Robb at the Whispering Wood or Oxcross. We have no understanding that the Freys have a deep-seated and very understandable reason to be absolutely pissed at Robb, beyond the pettiness of demanding a lifetime marriage contract for a single bridge crossing.

Catelyn has been rendered almost entirely a non-entity this season. This season, of all seasons. When Catelyn's growing dread and helplessness in the face of events, and her desire for peace in what has become a hopeless war, should have been front-and-center in the northern storyline. As well, TV Show Robb has lost my sympathy on many points, most importantly for simply falling into the tired cliche of marrying purely for love to an exotic beauty from across the sea, betraying his vow not so that he can uphold his new wife's honor but purely for selfish reasons.

One thing you didn't mention that is especially bugging me, though, and has been relentlessly bugging me every episode we get closer to RW: a TV viewer has had no build-up whatsoever to the concept of guest right. I'm an absolute believer that this is not a throw-away detail. It's the essence of what makes the Red Wedding all but unthinkable in Westerosi culture, a breach of everything held sacred, the reason why allies and enemies alike now hold the Freys as the lowest form of life on the earth. At this point, between the lack of guest right and the fact that Walder Frey is entirely neutral, I'm not sure why a viewer wouldn't expect the Freys to just go ahead and kill them all in a moment of vulnerability to get back in the Lannister's good graces, rather than throwing their lot in with a failing rebellion.

I totally agree with you. I was going to mention the guest right, but then I forgot while writing :drunk: It's been bothering me, too. I think the only mention of it so far was during the mutiny of the NW in Craster's place. I really wish they wouldn't have left out Mance's story when he went to Winterfell. About how Ned couldn't have hurt him even if he discovered him because the guest right is sacred.

Anyone else feel like the dialogues between LF and Varys got way worse than back in S1? In season 1 i really valued those scenes, Varys always quietly approaching LF, the classic quotes like "when you imagine yourself up there [...] does the crown fit? do all those lords simper and bow [...]?". It was way more subtle and witty imho. LF counting swords in the IT (yes we got it, Baelish wants power, thank you), the "chaos is a ladder" monologue.. blah.

True but on the other hand, their exchanges in S1 also had the infamous "gash" line. Not exactly a great piece of writing.

The good thing about Varys/LF in s1 however, is that LF didn't have the bat-voice, so their dialogue felt much more natural.

It didn't bother me that much, but i agree, out of character and probably among the worst line in S1 as well. Still, in S1 their interactions in the throne room served so many purposes. It showed who really pulls the strings in KL, it showed how dangerous those 2 men really are, how they despise each other etc. I really don't know wtf was the purpose of the "thousand blades of aegon who are a lie chaos is a ladder blabla". Sounded like some really bad writing to me.

I don't really like their exchanges at all. The story has already shown the audience that these two guys are the ones pulling the strings behind the scenes. Especially both of their interactions with Ned in S1. Their dialogues strike me as an ongoing contest of one-upmanship, and bragging to each other about who is more dastardly. They should both have thick black mustaches to twirl while they do the scenes.

I liked the chaos is a ladder speech, it would be better if LF didn't have a crazy cartoon villan accent, but I thought it did a good job of capturing the essense of LF character.

But, they've done variations on this scene MANY times already. We get it. LF and Varys don't like each other and are super smart GOT players, how many times does the audience need to be reminded of this?

That was an awesome monologue! It perfectly encapsulated not only Littlefinger but also everyone else who plays the game of thrones.

This episode is the first time we have had proper emotional investment in some characters in it and knowing Martin wrote it it makes me really wonder if the producers and other writers really understand the characters and plots. Every episode topics spring up weekly about how something was completely out of character, why didn't he say his best line from the books, why did they needlessly change this plot, where are all the background characters/bannermen gone? Don't get me wrong I love this show but the writing and changes are very questionable.

Not a nitpick as much as a complaint, but I'm really starting to hate all the unnecessary nudity. It's not so much provocative as it is stupid, unnecessary and tedious. Castration porn, camera focus on Talisa's butt crack...and all the prostitute scenes in previous episodes... Skip the nudity and focus on character development and story instead.

Oh, and I'm also tired of Shae the not so funny whore. Just kill her already.

I honestly wonder whose idea it was to show the love between her and Tyrion by making her perpetually bitchy and accusatory, while going through roughly the same scene with him over and over.

This. I thought the speech itself was pretty good, if a little over-the-top, but had it been said in a normal voice it would've been a great scene. With the bat-voice it was just ridiculous.

Show!LF is a textbook mustache twirling villain at this point, when he is so much more in the books. I'm surprised he doesn't have a snickering dog following him around.

They had both Robb and Talisa's butts visible on the screen at one point. I think that was a first for the show. I wonder if these actors are actually willing to expose everything except the genitals, or if the butts and nipples were CG'd on.
