Superman and Batman

Batman

Recommended Posts

Checked your list against the streaming options from Netflix. These are all available:

  • Batman: Under the Red Hood
  • Batman: Year One
  • Superman vs The Elite
  • All-Star Superman

Those are far more representative of DC animated films done well. Superman vs the Elite is must see viewing - espeically for everyone who hated Man of Steel for his endangering of innocent civilians and his final confrontation with Zod. I like MOS but Snyder adapting this could have been great (although I think Matthew Vaughn could have been even better because of the British connection).

I thought Superman/Batman Public Enemies was pretty good. What I especially like is that it shows their friendship, even when their opinions differ. The book does a good job of going deeper. Did they have the original Worlds Finest from the series? That was descent.

I think it suffers from being a bit rushed which is a general criticism of the animated films but another 20 minutes would have allowed more breathing room for the characters and story. It's still good fun though - I recall the battle with Captain Atom being quite good?

I've skimmed through the thread, and I can't find where anyone has explained exactly how Batman and Superman would be plausibly against each other.

Can someone point me in the direction of a summary of the plot of the comic where this actually happens? Is there one? Also, both seem to be set in the near future, and on Earth, am I right? It doesn'ty seem that crazy that they could meet, but I don't quite understand how they would be enemies unless Superman was somehow infected with red kryptonite? (P.S. Tom Welling was SO FREAKING HOT in Smallville when they broke out the red kyptonite. Daaayum.)

They had a good one in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. Lex gives Bruce Wayne Kryptonite (seemingly unknowing his identity) which Superman finds him holding as Batman and engages in a fight. Basically its just Superman kicking him around and sending a message to who he assumes is an enemy. Bruce begins to understand Luthor's position and provides him with technology that helps Lex in his plans.

In Hush he uses electric shocks, soundwaves and kryptonite while Superman is being mind controlled. Superman is holding back as much as he can as batman makes it clear he could just put his fist through his skull and end it. But Batman's plan is to make Clark break the mind control by threatening his wife's life.

I think either Superman or Batman needs to be mind controlled or Lex Luthor manipulates Batman into joining his battle against Superman. I always hated the government stooge Superman in the Dark Knight Returns because that is not who the character is. Superman has stood up to authority on a number of occasions and has very socialist roots. It made the finale good because it was the two big guns going at one another. It wouldn't have had the same impact if it was Green Lantern or Flash fighting Batman.

I think what made it tough was that most of the story was told through Superman and Batmans thoughts in the book which cant be done in the film. Which, as you said, made it rushed. It is the fun action film of the animated films they have done, it doesn't have the message of Superman vs. the Elite. Although Superman's fury over Luthor killing his "best friend" was terribly awesome to me.

The one after the battle with Grodd or the one where Atom saved them from Major force destroying the city?

Superman's fury is always amazing to see as it lets us remember what he could do and you have to admire his control the rest of the time.If Batman thinks it's a struggle not killing Joker imagine if he could destroy a city if he lost his temper.

Atom's sacrifice was the part I enjoyed.

My memory is vague but did they tone down the "new avengers" analogs in the film. I recall the comic shamelessly had a spider-man, etc on a team.

IMO, the other way around would work better. Batman investigates the uncontrollable alien that just took part in the catastrophic destruction of a major city. You could tie it in to Lex Luthor, tycoon reaching out to one of the few individuals that could stop Superman. He manipulates a conflict, the two clash then come together, paired off against Luthor.

Clark Kent could be sent to Gotham to investigate a string of violent assaults that has lead to a number of career criminals being hospitalized?

That's pretty amazing. I think what got me about this particular moment was that it showed that Superman cared about Batman. Batman would never display his feelings so it was cool to see. I am just a big fan of those two, who differ on philosophies, respecting and trusting one another more than anyone. I think that's part of my annoyance with this vs. crap.

That was cool. It was good they included that despite the change in story, because his sacrifice to stop the meteor was really good.

I am not that familiar with the New Avengers. What analogues do you mean?

The team that was sent after them had a spider-man type character and some others that were similar to the avengers line-up at the time. I'm pretty sure they would have cut them out the film though.

The team Luthor sent had Captain Atom, Major force, John Stewart, Black lightening, starfire, Katana and power girl.

I'd love Supes vs. The Elite as a future sequel, amazing how that story was told in what? 1-2 issues? Great film as well.

It'll be interesting to see how movie fans like Uber-Bat [if they go that route in Vs or for Justice League]. I loved the stuff GM put him through, but GM is probably my favorite comic writer as his views often correspond to my own and I appreciate his ideas even when others say they suck.

It was a single issue from what i remember. I think that helped the film because it actually allowed them to expand on the original story whereas usually they have to cut material.

Joe Kelly is sitting pretty happy as one of the Man of Action team but I do think he's a criminally underrated comic author. His Deadpool was great too and it's a shame his x-men run was so editorially driven (probably as bad as current dc but the internet didn't make us as aware)
