The Dornish Direwolf
Am I reading this name right in my head? I always thought Aegon was pronounced Ay-gon, until I read Dunk and Egg. Any clue on the correct pronounciation? Just a little tidbit but its been bothering me.
Willard/Mitt Lannister
Ask GRRM. Per the invented Valyrian language you'd pronounce it aye-gohn.
blood of the dragoon
Ask GRRM. Per the invented Valyrian language you'd pronounce it aye-gohn.But maybe with a westerosi accent it's eggon? Who knows? Great name btw, willard.
Stannis Eats No Peaches
I pronounce it Ay-gon. It sounds much more impressive than Eggon, though Dunk and Egg and the TV show disagree.
TheMysteriousOne
I mostly pronounce the 'ae' in Valyrian names as 'ay'. So Aegon is AY-gone, Daenerys is Day-NAIR-is or d'NAIR-is.
Le Dragone
I like Ay-gon better, but I guess the 'Ae' is pronounced the same way the 'ae' in Daenerys is pronounced (D'nairis).
TheMysteriousOne
I pronounce certain Targaryen names differentlyAerys= AIR-isJaehaerys= jay-HAIR-isDaemon= DAY-mawnRhaenys= RAY-nisViserys= vi-SAIR-isETA: The 'ae' in Aegon can still be pronounced as 'ay', even though his nickname is Egg, because there are different pronuciations of the word, egg. WatcherOnTheWall
It has to be AY-gon, eggon sounds stupid.I pronounce certain Targaryen names differentlyAerys= AIR-isJaehaerys= jay-HAIR-isDaemon= DAY-mawnRhaenys= RAY-nisViserys= vi-SAIR-isETA: The 'ae' in Aegon can still be pronounced as 'ay', even though his nickname is Egg, because there are different pronuciations of the word, egg. Also I'm sure most people pronounce it this way so you are not different. Tourniquet
I think egg-ON sounds terrible. Aye-GON all day!
Fish Swim
I pronounce it AY-gon as well; the Latinist in me refuses to pronounce "ae" as anything but "ay".
Lord Puff Fish
Ay-gon. But to be fair, I pronounce the word egg like "ayg" so it works out in the end.
jenerationx
Everyone saying "Ay-gon" has obviously never read Dunk & Egg. It's very clear from those novels that it's pronounced "Egg-on." It's not how I pronounced it in my head before either, but once it was stated as such, I changed it.The boy looked miserable. “I never meant to lie.”“But you did. About everything. Starting with your name. I never heard of a Prince Egg.”“It’s short for Aegon. My brother Aemon named me Egg. He’s off at the Citadel now, learning to be a maester. And Daeron sometimes calls me Egg as well, and so do my sisters.”It'd make no sense for his nickname to be "Egg" if it were pronounced "Ay-gon" imho. Continuing to call him "Ay-gon" would be like continuing to call Hermione whatever most people thought it was pronounced in our heads before JKR clarified.

Eggon still sounds close enough to Aygon to make the joke work, remember that's it supposed to be a stupid nickname. If it's Eggon it would also be Rheggar and Mekkar, do you seriously want that to be the case?
