No idea how Stannis was meant to be taken, OP, or even if GRRM likes him. What I do know is that you are either a Lord of Chaos or an incredibly brave person to even broach such a topic on this forum. Good luck & Godspeed.

lol, why is that? Stannis fans dont bite.

GRRM talks about Stannis a bit during the Blackwater episode commentary:

"Stephen Dillane, who plays Stannis, is another wonderful member of our cast. He has sort of a thankless role, 'cause Stannis is almost anti-charismatic. He's such a hard, rigid personality, blunt & brusk. Grudging with praise, quick to complain. It is hard to like him, to capture that personality, Stephen does a very good job."

Stannis was painted terribly early on. Cat, Davos, and Cressen all have various shades of horror at what Stannis had become. And two of those people are Stannis' biggest supporters. Stannis has since become more endearing, but it was not and is not an easy road to likeability for him.

I think not a likable person himself, but his actions (mostly) are supposed to be seen in a positive light. Getting rid of Lannister rule and fighting back the Wildings, good actions... His decisions with Melisandre involved, questionable. What's indisputable is that he's a character and I doubt that GRRM really focuses so much on certain characters if he himself didn't like them, as they are his 'children.'

Stannis was meant to be likeable for people who didn't judge from first impressions, who read and analyzed his character properly and who reconciled to the fact that the series isn't just about a few main characters.

And that's the way he is written in the books also. Only dysfunctional people can love Stannis despite all of what he has done to his Maester Cressen, his brother, his nephew, his political uncle, etc.

Guys, where is the link to the interview where GRRM called Stannis a righteous man?

You should be doubting whether you should even so much as discuss Stannis if you think him killing that horrible brother of his was not justified.
