Was Rhaegar feminine?

So I bumped into some people arguing that Rhaegar is feminine so he should be played by a feminine actor or whatever

and I'm confused, was it ever said that Rhaegar was feminine in the books? I don't really remember

I was thinking he was quite manly because he put up a fight against Robert so

maybe I was wrong

I guess it's a little stereotypical, but I think the text says that Rhaegar was into playing instruments (maybe singing even?) and reading. In the setting, boys were supposed to be into sword play and stuff like that.

Maybe people are mis-interpretting music and reading as feminine.

I think it's a mis-conception because the text says he's bookish and plays instruments. Yet, I don't see Rhaegar as the muscular boy, and he's supposed to be the most beautiful human alive, according to parts of the books, so...

These two are pretty much how I picture Rhaegar.

George's description of Valyrian looks tend to feature the idea of very fine features, for the most part, and a sort of extraordinary beauty. But male beauty in this day and age is often associated with androgyous or effeminate qualities.

I don't recall GoT having any flashbacks, and did not see Rhaegar in the HoTU visions. I don't think we will see an actor playing Rhaegar.

From the description, the image I get is very feminine, but I'm pretty sure he's not meant to be. And also all the fan art doesn't help that notion. Same with Daemon, he's described as looking like the warrior reborn or something, but his portrait looks anything but (I think in the SSM's Martin wasn't particularly happy with it.)

Lyanna was more mannish than him.

Like this?

I don't think Rhaegar is supposed to be effeminate but rather possess an otherworldly, I'd say elven, kind of beauty:

This made me laugh out loud. Thanks for posting.

I really couldn't call Rhaegar effeminate. For instance, Rhaegar had no apparent fear of combat, in fact expecting to beat Robert at the Trident. There's no report he shrank in fear from this hammer-wielding giant who wanted to kill him. He is also called a "puissant warrior" by Selmy and we know he knocked so distinguished a knight as Ser Arthur Dayne on his arse in the dirt -- twice in two different tourneys.

Even at a conversational level, Jaime recalls his "iron tones."

On the other hand, he doesn't seem to have been very interested in women, Lyanna aside. I recall no story, anecdote, rumor, hint... nothing whatever to suggest that he was sexually active with women before his "dutiful" marriage to Elia.

This is peculiar given the infinite opportunities Rhaegar would have had to get laid before he married, and the fact that most men are cheerfully prepared in their teens to take such opportunities as come their way, or create them if possible.
