First of My Name

Recommended Posts

There is a tradition in the "cozy" mystery genre of coming up with clever or funny titles.

Some examples:

Three by Sarah Shankman:

I Still Miss My Man But My Aim Is Getting Better

First, Kill All the Lawyers

Impersonal Attractions

A series by Dixie Cash:

Since You're Leaving Anyway, Take out the Trash

My Heart may be Broken, But my Hair still Looks Good.

I Gave You My Heart But You Sold it Online.

Don't Make Me Choose Between You and My Shoes.

Curing the Blues with A New Pair of Shoes.

Our Red Hot Romance is Leaving Me Blue.

from Avery Aames' "Cheese shop mysteries":

To Brie or not to Brie

Days of Wine and Roquefort

By Mary Jane Maffini:

Organize Your Corpses

Death Loves a Messy Desk

The Busy Woman's Guide to Murder

The "Chet & Bernie" series by "Spencer Quinn" (pen name of Peter Abrahams) where Chet, Bernie's dog, is the narrator:

Dog on It

Thereby Hangs a Tail

To Fetch a Thief

The Dog Who Knew Too Much

A Fistful of Collars

The Sound and the Furry

this is just a small sample -- obviously publishers think clever or punning titles are good for cozy mysteries. :)

I was? All i've got this time round is that System of the World is the best Stephenson title, maybe followed by Anathem and Reamde (but those probably just because I like word play.) I don't know what people are seeing in Snow Crash or Cryptonomicon.

ETA, gosh, I was.

A Clockwork Orange has a strange ring to it, which I like.

I love The Lies of Locke Lamora. It just rolls off the tongue and sounds almost poetic. While we're on Scott Lynch, alot of his books (including the unreleased ones) have really nice titles (although he might still change them). The Mage and the Master Spy sounds really good for some reason.

Havn't read it yet, but I love the sound of The Remains of the Day.

Honorary mention of Kearney for Kings of Morning and This Forsaken Earth.

Use of Weapons

The Left Hand of Darkness

The Darkness That Comes Before

Those were the 3 I immediately thought of.

I would add these off the top of my head:

Lord of the Flies

For Whom the Bell Tolls

The Sun Also Rises

The Name of the Rose

The Island of the Day Before

The Wind Through the Keyhole

A Rose for Ecclesiastes

The Walking Drum

The Killer Angels

The Wind in the Willows

The Girl who circumnavigated Fairyland in a ship of her own making

The Sorows of Young Werther (say what you want about the story itself, but the title is grea)

Salute the Dark

Farewell to Arms
