AGOT Mafia 50 - The Chef Battle

House Targaryen

Recommended Posts

It is day 1.

16 players remain: Connington, Corbray, Dayne, Erenford, Fell, Florent, Grandison, Mallister, Merryweather, Plumm, Pommingham, Smallwood, Stokeworth, Thorne, Tollett, Wythers.

9 votes are needed for a conviction or 8 to go to night.

9 votes for Mallister (Corbray, Smallwood, Plumm, Erenford, Grandison, Fell, Dayne, Thorne, Merryweather)
3 votes for Pommingham (Florent, Connington, Wythers)
2 votes for Erenford (Tollett, Stokeworth)
1 vote for Florent (Pommingham)

1 players have not voted: Mallister.

Lord Wyman Manderly opens the door into the kitchen and takes a whiff. "I hope this is to my satisfaction," he declares, then waddles back in retreat. His two attendants, niece (by marriage) Katran Manderly and young, thin Ser Donal "the Spider" Ryswell (who, during a sparring match, ended up with a head injury and calls himself a long-lost Targaryen heir now) stand in the doorway holding bowls.

"Lord Manderly has appointed us his official tasters," the Spider declares loftily. "I have royal blood, and thus my standards are high. Present me with your best dishes on the first day of this trial, and I shall select the best as chef."

"That's not the way it works," whispers Katran "the Enforcer" Manderly. "Lord Manderly wants to keep all these cooks for free as long as possible, so you may only eliminate one cook per day."

"Yes, yes. That's what I said. I will select the least competent cook here, and he shall be.....eliminated." The Spider adjusts his napkin and looks down his nose at the group of food-splattered chefs. "Who will have their dish tried first?"

The group shuffles backward, somehow moving Mallister to the front. He is not holding a dish. A moment later, the group helps him out by dropping a plate into his outstretched hand.

"Turnip macédoine au...other winter root vegetables," he stammers.

Katran Manderly looks into the dish skeptically. "Are the turnips supposed to be shriveled like this? No points for presentation."

Nevertheless, the Spider takes a large spoonful of the dish and chews it thoughtfully. He pauses for a moment.

"Awful! Terrible! I have had more toothsome stew made of old shoes in my forays into Flea Bottom! It cannot possibly get worse than this. It tastes of the ass of an ass! I must go rinse my mouth with lye for a more pleasant flavor! No more dishes today!" He stalks out.

Mallister looks at his dish miserably.

"Cheer up," says the other taster, herding Mallister toward the door. "At least you won't have to spend any more time with this lot."

As they leave, Thorne winks. "I guess adding that boot to his dish while he wasn't watching made the difference there," he laughs.

House Mallister (GardenGnome) has been eliminated. His turnips were made of fail. It is now night. Send your thoughts and PMs! No whining!

Edit: So I was looking at the spoilers for game 49 and got the alt wrong. Sue me. :P
Indeed. And then his corpse was kicked.
Oops.

Okay, I am out for a few hours.

I still assert that Erenford was the better option. Maybe the morrow will bring something more useful from him.

It was the right thing to do. I recommend all future groups of innocents do the same if they have a similar situation.

We will be down to 14 people shortly, and everyone left has made at least some marginal contribution so far, on which they can be judged. No one should feel bad about that lynch. Not at all.

No one sleeps very well that night; they're too busy thinking of new culinary masterpieces to impress the Manderlys tomorrow. And also thinking of ways to avoid getting poisoned.

The contestants are all awake come dawn. There's a bunch of bowls of porridge for breakfast already prepared by one of the other, less talented household cooks. Everyone eyes the bowls warily.

"I'm not eating that," says Merryweather. "Too many carbs."

"I'm a raw foodist," says the high-maintenance Fell. "Cooking leaches out all the best nutrients. Give me raw porridge or give me death."

A few bristle at the phrase and come up with their own excuses.

"I already ate."
"I bet it was prepared in the same bowl as meat, and the thought disgusts me."
"I'm on a diet."
"It's not organic."

"Er, yes it is," says Erenford, unsure. "We haven't even invented..."

"Whatever."

("But you said this story was going to involve gory deaths and poison," says a spectator. "Where are the gory deaths? Manderly scowls in response. "Poetic license with the theme," she says. "There...are things worse than death." Oooh....foreshadowing.)

So, with everyone finding some excuse or another to avoid the porridge, they get to their next task at hand: the day's work. They move to their cooking stations and are just getting out their tools when Fell shrieks.

"My garlic press!" he cries. "Someone has stolen my garlic press! Without garlic, my dish is ruined!"

"And it is a good thing, for the Lord Manderly cannot abide garlic!" declares the Spider as he enters the room. "You have shown unpreparedness, which is unacceptable for a professional. No proper tools! And poor taste to boot! Get this man out of here!"

Katran and her Myrish visitor, known Free Cities gourmet Shabba'rezade, firmly lead away the weeping Fell.

House Fell (Weekapaug) has been eliminated. Watch for poison and culinary sabotage!

Hmmmh, looks like my change to Pommingham has given me even more attention than before. Plumm is right, I was wrong about the votes on Mallister, because took Targ's vote count in post 361 and I missed Plumm's vote on him. Hence I thought it was Pommingham 4 and Mallister 3, and since some people signalled that they wouldn't like to lynch Mallister - and the game was stalling IMO - I decided to make it 5-2 for Pommingham. I explained that I was going to bed, so I had no chance to change my vote afterwards. Better a lynch on Pommingham than no lynch. I knew that this move might give me some frowns, but someone had to make the first step towards a compromise. And that you lynched Mallister has been very nice - it spares me a bad consicience about lynching Pommingham. :P
Ok, Week is dead, which means that the FM risked a lot with their last nightkill (threat of a healer). I'm pretty sure that at least one FM can be found on Fell's suspect list.
Clever FMs confident about their symp(s) could quite easily not be on the list, kill fell, and hope their symp spots their risk yet lack of being on that list and brings up the point that at least one FM must be? Of course, an innocent could fall into the same thinking (Without knowing it's a red herring) and do the same for them.

Taking a risk with no real threat, but an okay chance of a huge reward (Concentration on fells list keeps them alive for a few days) is a bold move, but could be an inspired one.

I wouldn't like to rule out Fells list, nor stick with it. Either way we could get caught up and miss the forest for the trees...

See, if you had said this before I mentioned Fell's suspect list, you'd get an award. Since you didn't I stick with the following sceneario:

FM 1: "Who shall we kill?"

FM 2: "Fell looks pretty strong. He already has us on his radar, hence he is not our symp!"

FM 1: "But he might be healed!"

FM 2: "That's right, FM 1, but we cannot risk that he leads a mob into our direction today."

FM 1: "Ok, let's kill him."

instead of:

FM 1: "Who shall we kill?"

FM 2: "Fell looks pretty strong. Howver, he doesn't have us on his list, so he could be a symp who is trying to distract the innocents. And if we kill him now, all the other players will look on his suspect list!"

FM 1: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have listened to Fell's suspicions anyway if he would have stayed alive."

FM 2: "That's right, and since no healer would be so stupid to heal Fell - I mean F-E-L-L - we can be sure that our kill goes through!"

FM 1: "Bingo!"

Shame i didn't suggest option 3, isn't it. Hitting a little too close to home that you have to ridicule it?

Face it. We know they decided that Fell was worth risking a heal. That much is clear. We therefore know they felt the reward was worth the risk.

Your "Reward" is to get rid of someone who suspects us, oblivious to the fact we'll then look at their list, but in the light of them being CI and unable to change their mind now.
My "Reward" is setting the innocents off on a wrong path, looking at those a strong CI wanted dead on day 1. Day 1, with little information still.

I know which reward is more worth the risk.

With you, they get rid of a strong player, but still have the mob looking at them. With me, they get rid of a strong (But so far wrong) player, make their wrong list look more valid, and get a few days peace.

Quick note before i go for a few hours:

I admit the validility of your theory. However, i think mine's marginally more likely. However, even if mine's almost as likely, it's silly to concentrate soley on Fells list. Yes, we should keep them in mind, I'm not about to CI anyone bar Fell at this stage, however I think we should also look at who else could be guilty, outside the list. Lets not narrow down the suspect pool quite yet please.

So, 5 anonymous users, yet no replies.

I wonder if that's anything to do with high posters catching a bad case of strangler poisoning?

Anyway looks like i'm off. I was hoping for some replies to either respond to or at least think about (ie other theories or approaches to consider) but it seems i'll have to make do with waiting til i come back.
