OMG HE'S COMING TO IRELAND!

Recommended Posts

You know, that guy, whatshisface, who's the reason we're all here?

Tuesday. I could take Tuesday off work since Belfast will definitely be the more exciting stop.

But I better go to the Thursday event anyhow. I'll go to/leave work early. I remember just happening on a Robin Hobb signing before. There was nobody there. :P And 5pm on a Thursday will mean that a lot of people wouldn't be able to make it.

Anyone going? Anyone know how to get in?

I'm sure they will let anyone in. :) As long as you don't look too scary anyhow. :P

Any signing is better than none, but what an appalling time. Even people working in the city centre might not be able to make it for 5!

I agree that the Belfast signing sounds more exciting, but I'll have to see how work is going to see if I can get time off. <insert mock-grumpy face here>

I think the time for the Dublin signing is fixed by the operating hours at Eason's. I can't recall the Eason's on O'Connell street being open any later than 6 or 7pm during autumn. Locals can correct me if I'm wrong.

For folks who may not be able to attend, you might want to call the Eason's in either Dublin or Belfast that are having the signings, ask for the person who handles author's events because the ordinary floor clerk who answers the phone may have no specific knowledge of the signings and the person in charge of the signing will have more information to give you. Often book stores will take orders for books to be signed by visiting authors, have them prepped for the author to sign, then will ship to the eager readers for no more cost than the books and the shipping. If that's no help, perhaps a Dublin/Belfast friend can attend the signings and get a copy for you. George also usually signs the store's stock, so there should be signed, but not personalized copies, available after the signing as well.

Yes, the UK edition of the Vance antho will be out, so I expect to see that for sale at the signings.

Getting people to attend signings is often a hit-or-miss effort. If you have friends who might be interested, let them know now about the signings. If you're in a local school or college, you can put an announcement on a bulletin board or web site. If you're on local blogs, forums or message boards, put up a post about the events. There's probably hundreds of Irish GRRM fans who don't frequent our boards and who would be delighted to hear that George is coming to Ireland this autumn. Give the bookstores a call to find out more details, such as: how long is the planned event, when can people start lining up, how many books can be signed. Early buzz will not only alert the bookstore that people are really interested, but may encourage them to have a more elborate event and push local publicity efforts to a higher level. The bigger the buzz, the better the chances that the local media will be interested. The higher the level of interest, the better the chances that the crowds will be good for the bookstores, and we're quite fond of bookstores.

Please, please, please, plan to buy at least one or two books at the signings. These events do cost bookstores both employee hours and money, in hopes that people will, you know, BUY BOOKS. After the event is over, I can assure you, someone at the store is going to look at the sales of GRRM titles to decide if they want to have George back for more events in the future (like, when he tours for the publication of DANCE). So spending some cash at these book stores during the signings could mean you won't have to travel to the UK to see George and get DANCE signed in the future. Most stores will allow you to bring a few books to get signed, but they need you to buy the books they have on sale as well. So if you don't need a new copy of AGoT, maybe it's time to get a copy signed as a Yule gift for a friend or loved one. There should be copies of other books by GRRM as well at the stores, you could even ask what they plan to have when you call them this week, like the WILD CARDS series, the Hedge Knight comics, FEVRE DREAM and other titles, urge them to get a few copies in if they hadn't planned to do so, and do some shopping for gifts for the whole family and friends. If you bring books from your own collection, be aware that the may be a limit on how many books you can get signed on one go-around in the signing line, then you'll have to go through the line again, depending on time and crowd size.

This is going to be one fun trip, despite the time of year. My first stop in Dublin will be at M&S for some new soft and wooly thermals, since no shop does sensible underwear like M&S.

Dubliners, start looking for a pub where we can reserve a room for a moot after the signing and dinner. We'll be staying at a hotel by the Liffey, not far from the Temple Bar.

We're both very excited about the trip, and as always, looking forward to seeing friends, Bros and fans on our journeys.

Is there likely to be any kind of meet after the Belfast one?

I don't know right now. Since this signing is mid-day, it might make more sense to call the moot for early evening, if there's enough interested folks in Belfast to gather for a few drinks. If there's some Belfast area Bros who can find a pub/restaurant near the bookstore that has a room we can reserve, please post details of possible venues, and let's see if we can do a moot.

We're still organizing this trip, and a lot is dependent on the shooting schedules for the production. I can say with some certainty that the book signings are fairly fixed on the calendar.

For folks who want to have their picture taken with George - please make sure you know how to operate the camera and that before you go up to get the picture that the person operating the camera knows how to use it!

Only the wearer cares about sensible underwear... ;)

Thanks for the info Parris. :)

They probably stay open till 7 on a Thursday but i'm sure they want to have the signing finished well before that.

I just want there to be a big attendance. :P And it does amaze me how many people wander around the streets of Dublin even during the daytime. 5 isn't that bad really for a signing since people can arrive a bit late.

Dubliners, start looking for a pub where we can reserve a room for a moot after the signing and dinner.

Pubs, pubs, pubs. Hard to know what kind of numbers should be planned for. The Oval is right beside Easons. It has an upstairs. Or 2. But i'm sure other ideas will come up before November.

Yeah, I want to see a good crowd there too.

How about we do a rsvp topic with a cutoff 2 weeks before the signing to get an idea of the numbers we'd try to find a room for?

with the Oval pub next to Eason's, they may have some experience with book signing over flow, or someone at Eason's may be able to see about reserving a room there for us.

yeah, a separate topic for rsvps might be the way to go.
