Belfast signing 3rd November

Silverstar

Recommended Posts

Here we go:

The queue gathers.

George signing Alfie's book (with Richard and Kit in the background). The guy on the far right is Matthew Hughes, author of 'Grolion of Almery', one of the best stories in Songs of the Dying Earth.

And again. Not sure what happened here, but George and Alfie seem to be okay whilst the rest of the image has gone a bit weird. Not a deliberate attempt to do a weird art shot ;)

George and Matt, ready for the crowds.

"Okay, George, that's really funny but seriously, what's my role at the end of Season 3?"

To be honest, I've got no idea what George said that nearly gave Richard heart failure. Or why a cameraman was trying to film George's ear at the same time.

The Starks should never turn their backs on a Greyjoy ;)

Board members Williamjm and Silverstar get their books signed

Sophie and Maisie, with some incongruous books in the background.

Alfie Allen signing a copy of GoT

And again with Maisie and Sophie watching on

Sophie, Maisie, Alfie & Kit (I have one later where Kit smiles! Guy was dead on his feet, but good-humoured with it)

Ron Donachie & Richard Madden (this is a good one)

Ron and a mid-signing Richard

That's enough to be going on with. I need to do a mission to go get some milk, more in a bit ;)

Kit Harington. We had to take a few pictures before we got one where he looked properly conscious. Despite his sleep-deprived, near-catatonic state, he was quite talkative and friendly.

Alfie signs Silverstar's book.

Back to the girls. This one destroyed my attempts at red-eye fixing.

The young Starks (plus Theon).

Silverstar with Ron, Kit, Alfie and Richard.

The cast with George. And more. And we got a smile from Kit in the end as well.

That's it for the signing. Party ones next.

From the other reports I don't think Richard ever gets hard failure. Ever.

Probably QFT.

Did we ever figure out who the cameraman was filming for? I remember some suggestion it might have been local news, but I don't think there was ever any confirmation of that.

I just got back from Belfast a couple of hours ago. I enjoyed it a lot, it was great to meet GRRM and the various cast members and also to meet up with the assorted other board members and other ASOIAF fans. I was particularly impressed with how enthusiastic all the cast members seemed to be (aside from Kit who seemed very tired, as others have mentioned).

I suppose I only really got to talk to a fairly small proportion of the GRRM fans there since there were so many of them, but it was nice to meet those that I did talk to. I hope you'll all show up at some future meets. Naturally, I talked to the people who were also staying at the Linen House Hostel most; Romulocks and Sara - I know they're not the first Americans to fly over the Atlantic for a meet, but I'm still impressed when people make that effort to come all the way from Kentucky for a meet. Romulocks had plenty of interesting conversations, although if you mention American politics to him be prepared for the conversation to last for hours ;), Knight of the Teabags (who had some impressively barmy Westeros conspiracy theories regarding Barristan and the Blackfish being lovers and Hodor being a secret Targarayen) and Jamie Heron (who kindly lent money to some numpty he'd only just met who needed to pay for the meal and had left his wallet back at the hostel ).

A few quick things I don't think have been mentioned so far:

- SerMountainGoat's book raffle at the meet raised an impressive £175 for charity, taking the exchange rate into account that comfortably beat the $190 raised at Worldcon (I may be misremembering the numbers slightly). Amusingly, the first winning raffle ticket belonged to Ron Donachie leading to cries of 'Fix' ;). Ron graciously declined the chance to choose a book, letting someone else win one.

- As well as the GRRM fans there was also a delegation from a Sean Bean fan site, who were disappointed that he didn't show, and that we didn't have any interesting gossip about him.

- the day after the meet I had a few hours to kill before my flight so went on an open-top bus tour of Belfast. It was a pretty interesting tour overall (I never knew CS Lewis was from Belfast, and I was surprised that there were still physical barriers between some of the Protestant and Catholic districts that are still closed at night to prevent violence, I was expecting that the different communities would still be divided in places, but I didn't realise it was still quite such a physical division) but from an ASOIAF perspective the most interesting part of the tour was passing the Paint Hall where the filming was going on (although the tour guide preferred to discuss less important matters such as some ship called the Titanic that was built on the site). The far end of the hall appeared to be partially open to the outside, and there were what looked like the wooden back of a couple of sets visible, unfortunately you couldn't really see anything about what the sets actually were.

- Julia Frey had plenty of interesting stories about the movie business, but was understandably reluctant to say much about GOT. She did point out that much of the scaffolding at Doune that people were speculating about being part of the show's filming, was in fact mostly for ongoing restoration work instead (I vaguely remember there being scaffolding there when I visited the castle about 6 years ago).

Dinner is Coming!

Okay, what are they up to?

Seriously.

Whenever George laughs, I suspect it's because he's figured out who is going to die next.

Romulocks popping the question.

Esme joins the party and poses with Sophie and Maisie.

This was so cool: Maisie and Sophie went and congratulated the happy couple.

George chatting to JacMac and Williamjm.

George and Ron. I like this shot a lot. Ron just dropped it casually into discussion that he was a fan of the Jets and George did a double take before they instantly plunged into an American football discussion.

The raffle draw. Ser Mountain Goat did a sterling job organising things and Silverstar helped out in the draw. Ron actually won the first ticket, but waived it in favour of someone else. George, Esme, Richard and Ron drew the tickets as well.

Richard and JacMac; Richard and Silverstar; Richard and our happy couple. You may sense a theme here.

I think George finally told Richard what happens to his character ;)

Me and Julia Frey, who was awesome.

The book of many signatures.

And finally, all the pics together (plus a few more I didn't include here due to severe tiredness). Which I could have just linked in the first place, but where is the fun in that?

That Kit fella playing Jon needs to learn how to smile, but then again...he is playing a Snow, so I guess it'll work.

And the more of Alfie, the more I'm reminded of how awful that piece of casting was. I mean, just look at him next to the guy who's playing Robb. Come on. Some Greyjoy...

There was some scaffolding on the inside when I visited in June. You won't see it on my pictures though, because I keep photographing around such obstacles. :)

As I said before, Kit was quite friendly, but shattered. I've got a feeling he'd actually done a night shoot and had come along to the signing on just a couple of hours sleep. He seemed pretty cool and enthusiastic about the show, but he was dead on his feet. We got a smile out of him in one of the group pics at the end though.

I must admit that Alfie did not meet up with my visual expectations of what Theon would look like (I forgot to ask him if he has a wig; Kit has one, but if it goes to series will grow out his own hair for the role), but after chatting to him, I was impressed with how well he got the character. I think he could be great. The relationship will be somewhat different - Theon trying to be a 'big brother' to Robb doesn't entirely work with this casting - but the two actors had a great banter going. I think it was Alfie (after George) who was most pushing the "Best Dressed Man in Scotland" (and that's official) thing.

Lol, Adam, for a guy you took surprisingly many shots of Richard and few of Esme. :D

Richard was just everywhere. Every time I turned round to take a picture he was there. Plus yesterday between the signing and the party someone asked for lots of pics of George and Richard, so I complied.

Esme wasn't around for very long and unfortunately quite a few I took of her were blurred or didn't come out right, so I junked them. She was extremely photogenic, though :)

One person I do need to say thanks to was Silverstar, who was an absolute star. She suggested/organised/delegated a lot of the party stuff, helped out with the raffle (also props to Ser Mountain Goat for organising that) and acted as informal hostess, chatting to everyone, making sure everyone was happy and so on

Great photos Wert. It is going to be so cool for you when you are (hopefully) watching the show thinking "I met those folks!"

Prediction: Richard Madden is going to be the breakout star of this show. Also I wonder how long it is going to be before we see some Richard Madden avatars around here?
