Belfast signing 3rd November

A couple of other things I remembered:

Alfie reports the swords they have are excellent and really impressive. Kit is having to wear a wig at the moment which he says looks great but he's going to grow out his own hair if they go to series. Everyone was very impressed with Ron's (fake) whiskers as Ser Rodrik.

Oh yeah, I was struck that Kit looks a bit like a young JJ Abrams in his pics, especially with the glasses.

Prediction: Richard Madden is going to be the breakout star of this show. Also I wonder how long it is going to be before we see some Richard Madden avatars around here?

Not a hard prediction. :P T

he ladies are definitely going to enjoy Richard. Swooning in no time.

@Silverstar

Thanks for the reportage and pics! I was wondering, was there any talk of Ehle / Cat?

Only that she's apparently really lovely, and looks more like Sophie's mum than Sophie's mum actually does, so I'm told!

And the more of Alfie, the more I'm reminded of how awful that piece of casting was. I mean, just look at him next to the guy who's playing Robb. Come on. Some Greyjoy...

I don't get that. Seemed great to me. He wouldn't be visibly older than Robb but I don't think that played much of a role in the story.

I have a write up of our experience at the Belfast signing and moot which I've posted online, if anyone is interested. There probably isn't much in there that hasn't already been covered by the others though. We had a fantastic time, and it was great to meet everyone. We feel really priviledged to have been there :)

Ooh, additional news point that I forgot earlier:

HBO have hired a dialogue coach and linguistics expert to create a working Dothraki vocabulary for the actors and extras to use in the Pentos scenes. They also have a working vocabulary guide which they handed out to the actors. As has been said many times before, GRRM isn't bothered about how readers pronounce words, but obviously they needed something moe consistent for the series, and he agreed to help them out with that.

whoa! sorry just catchign up. wait so did grrm create the language? there's some stuff in the books. didnt he just give them waht they need for the script?

Nice write up Iylliana - certainly more eloquent than I could've mustered! I didn't realise there was talk of making the moot a yearly event, I'd love to do it all again. Assuming the pilot is greenlit, does anyone have any idea when series production would go ahead? Six months? A year? I know it's really just speculation at this early point, but I imagine it would have to be before Maisie and Sophie get much older.

All the languages in the books just consist of the words GRRM mentions and that's it. As he says, he has six words of High Valyrian and when he needs a seventh he will make it up. For the scenes in Pentos they needed more for all the Dothraki at the marriage ceremony talking to one another in the background and so on, so they extrapolated more of the language from the words GRRM had already created.

I also imagine this is important for later scenes where Dany learns Dothraki and speaks to Drogo in it, as suddenly having Drogo learn English/Westerosi fluently would be moving away from the book a bit. Plus they may be thinking that even in later seasons Dany will still be speaking to her handmaidens and her bloodriders in the language as well, so they need to work something out for it.

Interesting to see if they do the same for Valyrian/Ghiscari in the slave cities and so on.

As you suggest, they'll probably have to do something. There is an important enough scene where Dany takes advantage of her knowledge of languages in aSoS.

GRRM did mention that he expected a decision by March. That's quite away. Given that, I think filming around this time next year is plausible. To film a full season they would need around 3 months presumably?

Thanks, everybody, for sharing your photos and stories!

Iylliana, thanks for reporting the story about George in Australia with the freaky trees. I never knew that that's where the weirwood trees came from, so it was supercool to see the pic you included. And yes, a bunch of us are planning on coming to Octocon next year. You can read about the initial stages of our discussion in the thread Alternative to AussieCon. Since many of us who are Stateside can't afford to make it all the way to Australia, we thought Octocon would be a great alternative, since GRRM is the guest of honor.

A bit later than everyone else as it took me longer to get home. :) Just want to add to the reports and say I had a great time meeting everyone, fans, cast and crew. Special thanks to Julia Frey - aka Miss "Maybe I am, maybe I'm not...." ;) (oh and it's pronounced Fry not Frey as in the books) for coming along and chatting for so long it was really interesting. And also big thanks to Padraig my personal photographer on the day!

I did have a panic over the photos, I thought I'd lost them last night but hooray, I recovered them today. I've put them up on Flickr. Much the same as everyone else's but can you really get too much of Richard Madden? Yum! ;)

JacMac30s moot photos.

Only things I can add to the reports. They had trouble with the original red in Richard's hair (I think that's what I saw at Doune, very RED!) and DnD had them redo his hair a couple of times to darken it down.

When I'd heard there was a dialect coach I wondered if that it meant the North men were to have Scottish accents which concerned me because there's an awful lot of bad Scottish accents out there. However I've been reassured that I won't be disappointed. That could be read that they're doing good Scottish accents or (I hope) not bothering at all :).

Anyway, so glad I chose to go. Great time...now are we doing anything for the premier night? ;)

Jackie.

Jealous!

Sounds like everyone had a great time hanging out with George and the cast.

Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that the series gets picked up and that HBO doesn't make us wait too long to see it!

Thanks for the information, Pod and JacMac! I wonder if Jennifer Ehle's hair will have been darkened as well -- I think it was you, Jackie, who said she was a bit more ginger than you imagined Catelyn?

And March, yes, that fits what I've heard. Or by March. But it'll be a few months, anyways.

I forgot about the March thing. I wasn't sure if that was George saying that he was told to expect an answer in March or if March was the latest they'd hear about the news, although that does track with the previous news that some of the cast were doing other projects as late as March/April, so shooting might not resume until the early summer.

Sophie and Maisie's mums asked me when I thought the news would come through so I pointed out the previous examples we'd mentioned in the thread about Treme and Boardwalk Empire being greenlit within 4-6 weeks of shooting finishing, but then also pointed out that was a new project by the creators of The Wire and another one by Scorsese, so HBO could also look at their previous form and work when making those decisions. GoT may very well take longer, maybe a lot longer, to make a decision about, especially since the Christmas holidays may fall in the middle of deliberations. I'm still hoping for an answer in January, personally, but obviously GRRM is better-informed than me ;)

I know I mentioned possible airdates to some people present and they seemed doubtful over 2010 and seemed to think early 2011 more likely. However, no-one on the production is involved in setting the airdates (that's a HBO company decision), so that was just us throwing guesswork around.

A yearly meet-up sounds like a good idea, but if we want to match it up with the series being in production that might not quite work out. If they are going to shoot Season 1 in the summer, I suspect they'll be well finished by next October/November. But who knows? It's very cheap and easy to get there, the hostel was perfectly decent and it was a great meet-up. Let's see how it goes :)

It was more ginger than I expected but I don't think it needs darkening. I think her colouring was fine. Richards on the day however looked very unnatural! :stunned: I was staring at his head as he went by and smiled, hence the reason I brought it up with him at the moot. My impression is his will be closer to what I think of as auburn.

Assuming it gets picked up, we could perhaps manage a bit of a tour around some of the more interesting filming locations too? I mean, even if they are not filming at the time they might still be cool to visit? :)
