[ADwD Spoilers] The Varys-Illyrio Conspiracy

Astute readers have known that Varys and Illyrio have been plotting together since the first book. What, exactly, they have been plotting has been harder to figure out. I've tried to put together a comprehensive timeline of what we know of the actions of Varys, Illyrio, and their fellow conspirators, and whether or not this information is true. I've probably missed some things (especially after reading ADwD just once), but perhaps others could help me work out what exactly is going on?

•Varys was born a slave in Lys. (Source: Pycelle tells Eddard in GoT. Possibly false; Varys later tells Tyrion he was an "orphan boy apprenticed to a traveling folly")

•Varys traveled with a group of performers through the Free Cities before he was cut. (Source: Varys tells Eddard this in the black cells, and later tells Tyrion the same thing. Almost certainly true, as judged by Varys' ability to make costumes. Martin confirms Varys was a mummer inthis correspondence).

•Varys was sold to a conjurer in Myr, castrated for some dark art, and left to die. Since then, Varys has hated magic. (Source: Varys' tells Tyrion in CoK. Possibly true. Tyrion thinks that Varys' voice "was different somehow" during this story, possibly meaning Varys is telling the truth for once.)

•Varys started thieving in Myr after his release. (Source: Varys' story to Tyrion in CoK, and Illyrio's story to Tyrion in DwD. Almost certainly true.)

•Varys makes enemies in Myr, and flees to Pentos "one step ahead of the slavers." He meets Illyrio and they become friends. (Source: Illyrio's story in DwD. Most likely true.)

•Varys and Illyrio work out their little scheme and start working together. Both of them grow rich. (Source: Illyrio's story in DwD. Most likely true)

•Aerys, growing paranoid, hears of Varys and brings him to King's Landing. The timing is unclear, but Varys is advising Aerys at least before the tourney at Harrenhal in the year of the false spring. (Source: Illyrio's story to Tyrion, and Barristan's reflection in "The Kingbreaker." Certainly true, although there may be more about this that we don't know)

•Varys' presence seems to only make Aerys more and more paranoid, and a few people seem to blame the eunuch for Aerys' descent into madness. (Source: Stannis reflects in SoS that "Ser Barristan once told me that the rot in King Aerys's reign began with Varys." Jaime tells Brienne that Aerys "saw traitors everywhere, and Varys was always there to point out any he might have missed." Possibly true, although Illyrio's comments to Tyrion seem to indicate that Aerys was already plenty paranoid by the time Varys came over.)

•Varys counsels Aerys to keep his gates closed for Tywin Lannister's host, but Aerys does not heed his council. (Source: Jaime's speech to Brienne. Almost certainly true)

•Varys is pardoned by Robert and continues to serve.

•Varys seems to take care of Robert's bastards during Robert's reign. (Source: Stannis tells Davos that it was Varys who sent gifts to Edric Storm. It was also most likely Varys who arranged for Gendry's apprenticeship.)

•Four to five years after the end of Robert's Rebellion, Varys makes plans with Jon Connington to have him leave the Golden Company and spread rumors about his death. Illyrio and Myles Toyne are also involved in the plot. Perhaps at this time Connington met the supposed Aegon? (Source: Connington thinks it has been twelve years since his time in the company, and recalls faking his death with Varys' help.)

•This supposed Aegon is raised by fishers, given lordly instruction by Connington, lessons from the Halfmaester, spiritual instruction by Lemore, and martial prowess from Duck. (Source: All over DwD)

•At some point, Viserys and Dany hang out with the Golden Company, and Viserys tries to convince them to fight for him. It doesn't work. I don't think it's revealed who is in charge of the Golden Company at this point, but it indicates that the conspirators aren't interesting in helping Viserys. (Source: Somewhere in DwD. I should have written this one down)

•At some later point, Viserys and Dany hook up with Illyrio. They stay for "half a year" before the marriage is arranged and Drogo comes to Pentos. However, Illyrio mentions "years of planning" when speaking of how he prevented Viserys from having sex with Dany, so possibly the Dothraki alliance was in the works even longer. (Source: GoT, and Illyrio's talk with Tyrion in DwD. Probably true, though the "years of planning" might be an exaggeration.)

•Illyrio assumes Dany will die on the Dothraki Sea. He attempts to convince Viserys to remain in Pentos, but relents when Viserys gives up some crap about waking the dragon. This seems to indicate that Illyrio cares nothing for Dany, at least. (Source: GoT and Illyrio's talk in DwD. This is up for debate - Illyrio could be lying to Tyrion.)

•Connington and the Golden Company seem to think that the plan is for Viserys to join the supposed Aegon with "fifty thousand Dothraki screamers at his back." Presumably they would then invade Westeros. (Source: The first Connington chapter. Connington at least believes this to be true.)

•Varys is still playing the game of thrones in Westeros. He tells Eddard that the queen is plotting to kill Robert, and drops a lot of hints that the Lannisters are up to no good.

•Illyrio and Varys meet in King's Landing. Illyrio asks Varys for more time, because Dany is pregnant and the Dothraki aren't ready to move. Varys admits that he can't stall off war forever. The conversation seems to indicate that Varys has planned for war to sweep across Westeros, but not so soon. (Illyrio: "What good is war NOW? We are not ready. Delay.") We learn that Illyrio has been supplying Varys with gold and his "birds." The conversation also shows that Varys and Illyrio are really fast friends (as opposed to just political allies); Illyrio refers to Varys as "old friend". (Source: Arya overhears this in GoT, without realizing what's going on. With no reason to suspect anyone is listening, Varys and Illyrio are almost certainly being truthful with one another)

•Varys brings news to the small council that Dany is pregnant. Robert orders her killed. Varys writes to Jorah to prevent this from happening. Varys, at least, seems to want Dany to stay alive. (Source: GoT, and Jorah's confession to Dany in SoS)

•When Robert is dying, Varys comes up to Eddard and Barristan and drops big hints that it was Lancel and the Lannisters who were responsible for the hunting accident. It seems here he is still trying to create a division between the Starks and the Lannisters.

•Varys visits Eddard in disguise, and urges him to confess and take the black. This is the first we hear about Varys "serving the realm." Perhaps Varys hopes that this will stall off war if Eddard is not executed.

•Varys suggests Barristan take the blame for Robert's death and be removed from the Kingsguard. (Source: Cersei tells Tyrion at the beginning of CoK. Most likely true. Some theorized that Varys wanted Barristan to join Dany, but Barristan's story in DwD indicates that he didn't immediately take off for Essos after his dismissal. Perhaps Varys just wanted competent advisors removed from King's Landing?).

•Varys manages to arrange for Gendry to escape King's Landing. He also is probably involved in telling Yoren to be there when Eddard chooses to take the black. (Gendry and Yoren's talk to Arya in CoK. Also, Varys tells Tyrion that he arranged for one of Robert's bastards to escape. Most likely he is telling the truth here, but its unclear what Varys gains from protecting Gendry).

•Throughout Clas, Varys works with Tyrion and seems to develop a healthy respect for his political skills. It's difficult to ascertain his motives in this book, however. Mostly Tyrion uses Varys to keep Shae hidden.

•At some point, Illyrio learns that Viserys is dead and Dany and her dragons are in Qarth. He possibly learns this from the "one report" Jorah admits he sent to Varys from Qarth. He dispatches Groleo, Belwas, and Barristan to go get her. The new plan for the Golden Company is to wait for the "pliable young queen" and her dragons to come back to Pentos. (Source: CoK, Jorah's confession in SoS, and Connington's first chapter in DwD. Connington believes this plan to be true. As a side note, we still don't know how Barristan hooked up with Illyrio.)

•Varys tells the small council of the rumor of a "three-headed dragon" in Qarth, deftly dropped in between other rumors. Tywin dismisses this out of hand.

•Varys turns against Tyrion after he is accused of Joffrey's murder, presumably to save his own skin.

•At Jaime's behest, Varys frees Tyrion and sends him on his way to Illyrio. It is unclear whether or not Varys intended Tyrion to kill Tywin and Shae.

•Knowing he will be blamed for releasing Jaime, Varys goes into hiding. He leaves an old coin from the Reach in the room of his alter-ego Rugen, which serves to raise Cersei's suspicions about the Tyrells. Speculation: Varys is still trying to keep the realm at war even when he can't directly pull strings.

•Qyburn tells Cersei that most of Varys' informers are now under his employ. It's unclear if this is true, or if Varys is still pulling strings and revealing to Qyburn what he wants to reveal.

•Illyrio receives news that Dany has turned to Slaver's Bay and conquered Meereen. He assumes she will continue to march west. The new plan is for the supposed Aegon and the Golden Company to meet her at Volantis. (Source: Illyrio's conversations with Tyrion, and Connington's first chapter. Most likely true, else why send the Golden Company in that direction?)

•Tyrion arrives at Illyrio's. Illyrio sends him off with Griff and Young Griff, but does not tell him about Young Griff's true identity. Their plans for Tyrion are unclear; Connington burns the note Illyrio sends to him about Tyrion, and doesn't think of it again. Connington does seem annoyed that Illyrio has involved more people in the plot.

•Young Griff/"Aegon" takes Tyrion's advice and suggests invading Westeros now. Connington agrees, and it seems he's tired of playing Illyrio and Varys' games. The greyscale probably feeds into this decision as well.

•The Golden Company invades Westeros. What Illyrio is doing, or whether he's aware of this, is unknown.

•Varys sees Kevan doing a pretty good job of bringing the realm back together. He kills Kevan and Pycelle with the intention of causing dissent between Lannisters, Tyrells, and Martells. (Source: DwD. Some debate about whether or not Varys is telling the truth to Kevan, but it seems clear that, at the very least, he wants to spread chaos and prevent competent people from being in charge).

What can we learn from all this?

•Varys' endgame during all these books has been to spread chaos across Westeros to prepare for the invasion. Illyrio's role is less clear, but perhaps he is funding the whole endeavor. He's at least funding Varys' "birds."

•Viserys/Dany, the Dothraki, and the dragons appear to be an afterthought. The supposed Aegon has been the plan for at least 12 years (it was 12 years ago that Connington left the Golden Company, faked his death, and hung out with Young Griff). "Aegon" has been groomed from the beginning, and Connington and Toyne were made aware of the plan. But Viserys and Dany were allowed to wander around the Free Cities, were rejected by the Golden Company, and were sent off to the Dothraki Sea with little training or protection. Dany only seems to be important at all once it turns out she has dragons.

•There is some evidence that Varys/Illyrio were responsible for Aerys' downfall, but this is not at all clear. It is also unclear why Varys didn't want Aerys to let the Lannisters into the city.

•There is some suggestion that this whole conspiracy is just Varys and Illyrio's former trick on a larger scale. Varys, as the thief, "steals" the realm from the Targaryens, and then Illyrio emerges and offers to help them regain it for a price.

•The "what" of this conspiracy is much clearer now - create chaos in Westeros to allow the supposed-Aegon to land (and if he has Dothraki or dragons, all the better). The "why" is still a big mystery.

•Varys and Illyrio seem willing to work with exiled Westerosi - Connington, Toyne, and later Jorah, Barristan and Tyrion. But neither Jorah nor Barristan nor Tyrion are told of the supposed Aegon; they think the endgame is Dany. The "inner circle" seems to be Varys, Illyrio, Jon Connington, Myles Toyne, and the leaders of the Golden Company.

•The plans that Willem Darry made with the Martells for Viserys and Dany seem to be a different conspiracy altogether. Doran thinks the Volantene ships carrying the Golden Company and the elephants are actually Dany and the dragons.

•Varys' care for Robert's bastards is interesting. Perhaps he likes collecting heirs?

•The big question from all of this is whether or not the supposed Aegon is the real deal. "Aegon" himself believes that Varys switched babies. Connington doesn't seem to doubt the identity of "Aegon," but it's not clear he was involved in the baby switcheroo at all, or even if he was working with Varys until a few years after the war. Varys' word seems to be the only true indicator that "Aegon" is actually Aegon.

Astute readers have known ...

Impressive. I've been wondering that if Viserys/Dany were the stalking horse to protect Aegon, there seemed to have been a change of plan that all of a sudden elevated Viserys/Dany to plan A. They went from unsupported, moving from town to town as beggars, to receiving major support with Dragon Eggs and the marriage to Drogo. After Qarth, they switched back to her being plan B again, with the 3 ships he sent to bring her back, presumably to Aegon and the Golden Company.

I wondered about this as well. Doran does seem to be working separately from Varys and Illyrio, and apparently he has an intelligence network of his own. He knew about the planned "bandit" attack involving Balon Swann, and he even says “Dorne still has friends at court. Friends who tell us things we were not meant to know." The only person I can think of who might have a network as sophisticated as Varys' is Littlefinger. Could LF and Doran Martell be in cahoots?

That Littlefinger... he never fails to impress.

Two other notes:

1) Illyrio may be a servant of R'Hllor. The very first line he has in the books is (from Dany's first chapter in AGOT): "Regal. May the Lord of Light shower you with blessings on this most fortunate day, Princess Daenerys."

Later in the chapter he says, ""The Lord of Light would hold our city walls against a million Dothraki, or so the red priests promise...yet why take chances, when their friendship comes so cheap?" So I don't know...he ma be a follower of R'Hllor, or he may be just a cynic...

2) Illyrio notes to Tyrion in DANCE that he once considered killing Viserys and taking Daenerys for himself (as a bride). He says he discards that idea because Daenerys is to fearful and joyless.

Thank you for the work you put into this. Great summary.

•Viserys/Dany, the Dothraki, and the dragons appear to be an afterthought ... Dany only seems to be important at all once it turns out she has dragons.

I don't agree. If you're trying to conquer Westeros, 40,000 Dothraki would be as if not more valuable than 10,000 Golden Company, wouldn't they? I think Dany's marriage to Drogo has to be considered an important part of any possible conspiracy of theirs.

•Varys' care for Robert's bastards is interesting. Perhaps he likes collecting heirs?

It would've been useful to have another example of Robert's .. uh, "strong seed" around in a war over whether Cersei's children are legitimate heirs.

Robert's Rebellion / War of the Five Kings / possible Targaryen restoration as Varys and Illyrio's old street game on a larger scale is an interesting idea but what profit would they see out of it other than their own amusement? How much richer can Illyrio get? What higher office could Varys hold?

I don't think the Varys/Illyrio scene in AGOT supports this. Illyrio says, "What good is war now? …we must have time. The princess is with child. The khal will not bestir himself until his son is born." This is before the dragons hatch, and Dany and Drogo are mentioned as being central to the plan. Also, you should add Illyrio giving Dany the three priceless dragon eggs. Why would he do this if he expects her to die? Why not give the dragon eggs to Aegon? Where did he get the dragon eggs? Illyrio sending Dany off to die with the Dothraki makes zero sense -- he must be lying to Tyrion.

Yeah, I think this is the key turning point, not the birth of the dragons. Well, either that was a turning point, or the baby Aegon plotline was conceived by GRRM after he wrote AGOT. Let's hope not...

Hmmm. It occurs to me that the original spoiler Tyrion chapters posted here had Illyrio mentioning that "the dragon has three heads." This was taken out in the published edition. I wonder if, at some point, Illyrio and Varys encountered the same prophecy that Rhaegar did, and realized that they needed three dragons instead of just one. That could explain their sudden interest in Dany and Viserys...

It's a stretch, though, especially because it's not in the published edition.

True. I was thinking of the original Tyrion 2, where whoever summarized it included this paragraph:

Illyrio says he wants to give Young Griff his blessings and has a gift for him in the chests. Haldon tells him there is no time for the litter. Illyrio gets angry and says there are things Griff must know. The Golden Company has broken its contact with Myr and is riding west from the Disputed Lands. Haldon interrupts him by saying they already know this because Bennaro has seen it in his fires and that the Golden Company makes for Volantis. That is why Griff needs them to make haste. Illyrio says, "The dragon has three heads, there is no need for haste. .

None of this was in the final version. Incidentally, Illyrio's gifts to Young Griff in this version point toward the "Young Griff is Illyrio's son" theory.

There's no reason to believe that Illyrio regarded the Dragon Eggs as anything more than an expensive wedding gift. They could not have predicted the set of circumstances that led to Dany hatching them.

Has Varys equals Rogen ever been confirmed?

I don't even recall hearing it before, although I could be mistaken. If I'm not, then that's speculation as well.

Alot of this fits my theory.

That theory being that Varys is a Blackfyre, and "Aegon" is too.

It'll be confirmed more to me if R+L really does = J. Meaning the Targaryen seed is not strong. It is said the last of the Blackfyre line ended with Maelys The Monstrous, but who knows, he was a member of the Golden Company, and he could easily have fathered a bastard, who would later end up in Varys himself, and false Aegon. Barristan Selmy is the one who killed Maelys. That there gives me thought that Illyrio sending him off to Daenerys, the Targaryen they -don't- want to make it to Westeros makes sense.

Varys hates magic. Let's say this is him telling the truth. If so, then Varys totally hates dragons, as they are magical creatures.

Viserys with his Dothraki would have been helpful, but I think that the plan was to get rid of Viserys by setting him up with a people that wouldn't have put up with him, especially his evil treatment of Dany. And yet Khal Drogo died, and the dragon eggs hatched. Something I think neither of them planned for. Though it is interesting that Illyrio gave her the eggs.

Jorah Mormont was needed as a foil to Dany, since they knew Jorah's wife looked like Dany, and he would fall in love with her. Was it Illyrio that arranged to trade slaves with Jorah?

The same can be said of Tyrion, his issues has him easily falling in love. Just look how he was with Sansa. He wants to be loved so badly.

makes sense with Quaithe's prophecy, Dany being betrayed for love.

All of this leads to a Blackfyre takeover of a kingdom lost in chaos. Bronn has been in the North, I wonder why, could it be he was sent by Varys to call forth The Others? More chaos, but perhaps more chaos than Varys is intending?

Shae was obviously some highborn lord's daughter that Varys used to manipulate Tyrion.

I think Varys knew that Aerys would not listen to him and open the doors to the Lannisters. Aerys could easily have known that Varys was plotting, and would just do the opposite of whatever he advised, and Varys knew this.

also I don't think that Connington knows it's a false Aegon. He trusts Varys. I think, like a lot of people, that Connington had feelings for Rhaegar, and as such, he feels strongly obligated to take care of and stand by Rhaegar's child.

oh yeah! AND, Illyrio refers to The Lord of Light, could it be that the followers of R'hllor are in on the whole thing? It does seem that several red priests and priestesses find themselves at key junctures in the story. Melisandre especially.

Anyways...just some thoughts.

As for Illyrio's end-game it could be as simple as gold or vengeance or power, but that first or second Tyrion chapter with him given his conversations leads me to at least speculate (perhaps ridiculously) that Young Griff may be his son with his second wife. That's about as good as motivation can get, even if the aspiring Prince and everyone else is unaware of the familial connection.

And I'd say Varys is the one that fed the info to Doran, although it wouldn't surprise me if he has other connections everywhere to be sure.

This is the best evidence that I've heard so far to indicate that Aegon might be a fake. Why would Dany have been given all three eggs? You'd think that Varys and/or Ilyrio would've wanted to spread them around amongst their collection of Targaryen heirs both for safe keeping and to maximize the chance that one of them would figure out how to work them.

•Varys' care for Robert's bastards is interesting. Perhaps he likes collecting heirs?

I think the reason for this was simply to be able to cause chaos after Robert's death, by using his bastards to prove that the 'legitimate' children were abominations born of incest. You have the potential for civil war and the disgrace of the Lannisters and a nice opportunity for 'Aegon' to land and declare himself the true born heir to the iron throne.

Dany was given all three eggs simply because NO ONE thought they could hatch, they were no different the fossilized eggs we see in museums today. They were beautiful and worth a fortune, but Illyrio never knew they could be hatched, he thought they were just valuable gifts.

Perhaps he is using them as a backup plan if the Targ heirs dont work.

Now as for Vary's motives I think he is actually doing this for the good of the realm as he says, and that he believes that Dany or Aegon has to sit on the Iron Throne, to fight the others.

Also somewhere in the books it talks about Rhaegar reading a book of prophecy and changing forever after that. Perhaps this book of prophecy was given to Rhaegar by Varys.

Look at all the gifts Dany receives from Illyrio, or any other character for that matter - does this imply that they could be Dany's father/motehr/whatever? No, of course not.

Young Griff stayed with Illyrio for years, so it's natural that some sort of fondness has developed for the boy. Also, if you were helping a Targaryan get to the Throne - wouldn't you want to ensure you're on his good side?

I really dislike the fake Aegon theory, not because I don't see the evidence (I think evidence is there for both cases). I simply dislike it on the fact that it a weak subplot to introduce this late in the game and if anything would only serve to further complicate the storyline - in a negative fashion.
