[Book Spoilers] Yara?

I really enjoyed the first scene we get on pyke, from brother-sister groping, disturbing but contextually sound, to sad Theon watching father and sister walk out on him.

I might have missed it but is Asha`s name ever mentioned in the scene? At first she didn`t introduce herself to Theon, then at the throne portion when she hugs Balon all Theon says is... "Yara?".

Having read the books I know who she is and that she is in fact not called Yara, but to non book readers was that made clear enough? Nobody that I noticed said Asha, so I`m wondering if people have any idea who that girl really is.

I don't buy that producers changed the name only because Asha sounds like Osha when Yara sounds like Arya. The only thing I can think is that at some point Asha and Osha will be on screen together and in that case, perhaps it could be weird to have characters calling out "Asha and Osha" in the same sentence. But I think GRRM chooses the names of his characters quite deliberately and D&D would be deliberate in choosing names as well so maybe there's something to Asha's name change being an anagram of Arya.

I though Yara was a bad name but said out loud it sounds atrocious. And it being an anagram to Arya it just proves the lack of imagination of the writers rather the some secret subplot. One more reason this pillocks should not try to reinvent the wheel.

I refuse to call the TV character Yara. There is no reason for changing that character's name...if you're a fan of GOT or ASOIAF...then you have a big enough attention span so as not to confuse Asha and Osha. This isn't a show for the casual viewer. I'm going to refer to Gemma Whelan's character as Asha regardless of what she's called on TV.

I guess it was the same reasoning that had them change Robert (who got his name from his father's ward, the King no less) into Robin.

Doesn't bother that much really. Thought the actress was just about okay. Wish they'd included to feast scene where she catches knives out of mid air though. Put that point about her being "one of the guys" and a real tough fighter across.

But at least that annoying little brat was already called "Sweetrobin" or whatever by his mum, so that change isnt all that big.

Asha into Yara makes no sense really. I mean, it's easy to confuse names in books, but in TV series, where we actually see the people, it's not that easy to confuse two people with no resemblance whatsoever, just because they have similar names. And they won't even be together in at least another 5 seasons or so, if ever. D:

So I see. Asha is Yara in the series. I thought he was refering to her "fake" name she might have given him when offered to take him to the castle.

Changing her name from Asha to Yara is so ridiculous it never even crossed my mind, alas, HBO.

I wonder if they`ll ruin ASoIaF as bad as they did the "Sookie Stackhouse" novels.

Considering the porn paralel I fear for what`s to come.

It was awkward when Balon called her Yara, even though I knew he would. Also, I expected her to be prettier, but that's just my imagination.

Its not that big a deal yall

I actually hate those fans that complain over minor details but changing Asha's name just irks me to no end. I know it's only a name but for a character who plays a fairly major role in the book series, it sort of strips some of the character from her when they change her name. Maybe I'm naive but when an author gives a character a name, I believe it means something and taking that away sort of tarnishes things a bit for me. Of course, I won't give up on the show or the character over a name change (by the way, I like the actress...it's a bit too early to tell but I think she can really grow into the role) but I just would rather call her by her book name because the show name changes nothing, it only insults the audiences intelligence.

I don't think it well ever get as bad as True Blood. Unlike Alan Ball who seemed to only like the premise of the Sookie Stackhouse Novels, David and Dan seem really into Martin's world. I think they will stick fairly true to the spirit of the books. I'm sure there will be things here and there that won't appear right but I don't think it will ever completely twist away from the world, story or characters GRRM created. Oh and of course there will be nudity...it is HBO.

Robert Arryn is called Robin in the books so they aren't exactly changing his name. They are just eliminating the need to explain a nickname. Furthermore, Robin sounds like Robert and Robb is a shortened version of Robert so why didn't they completely change all the characters names if they sounded too much alike? Why didn't they call Asha Esgred since she calls herself that in the books at one point?

True, in the end it does not really make much of a difference whether she's called Asha or Yara in the show but it would be interesting to know exactly why they chose to explain the name change by saying it sounded too much like Osha and why they chose Yara when it sounds too much like Arya.

You Americans don’t understand, because the American pronunciations of Asha and Osha are so far apart, and you aren’t used to un-American accents. But the British pronunciations are quite close:

  • Asha: U.S. /ˈæʃə/, U.K. /ˈɑːʃə/
  • Osha: U.S. /ˈɔːʃə/, U.K. /ˈɒːʃə/

Sure, TV audiences would hear the difference between /ˈæʃə/ and /ˈɔːʃə/ in a trice, because what you do with your mouth for the initial sounds of both words is so far apart.

But they aren’t using American accents in this show! They’re using (various) U.K. accents. And nobody is going to hear a big difference between /ˈɑːʃə/ and /ˈɒːʃə/ — because there really isn’t one. Those are nearly identical.

See the problem at last? It’s obvious, really.

And no, Arya and Yara are not close together at all.

Perhaps Alfie Allen -- who will be interacting with both Yara and Osha this season -- pronounced the two names quite similarly? Because if so it would be confusing for viewers.

Of course it's frustrating that the name has been changed. But it's not a big deal. It's not going to affect your enjoyment of the books.

Right, and the rest of the world cares because? Did the british edition of the books come with a different name?

What about parts of the world where English is not the main language? Should we get different names too?

Names are names. They are what they are, not for changing purposes. Unless its a different alphabet and therefore unppronouncable it shouldn`t be changed.

So the reasoning is the name is too similar to Osha, well it's not like people have ever had the same name is it?

Jon Snow has never been confused with Jon Arryn

Robb Stark was never confused with Robert Baratheon

And seriously could no one figure out that Osha (the captured wildling prisoner) is a different person from Asha (Theon's sister and Ironorn princess)
