Which will be the first Great House to lose the game for good?

I don't think GRRM is gonna wait until aDoS to start tightening loose ends. I believe at least one of the Major Houses has to be removed from the board in tWoW. I don't think a house needs to be completely wiped out to lose, they could just suffer a major defeat or lose a essential member or simply they could decide to surrender and give up.

My vote is on the Tyrells, even if they are one of my favorite houses. But they have been too influential, too powerful, and they are still more unscathed than other houses. They're in for a fall and their absence from the game would be a big game changer, I think.

In second place, I think House Baratheon will fall if Stannis and Shireen die. Yeah, someone could legitimize the bastards, but losing Stannis would be a huge blow for the Baratheon cause. Not to mention the likely demise of Storm's End and the stormlands.

Tightening the loose ends doesn't mean ending one or more Houses. I believe Martin will wound Dorne and Tyrells rather seriously, while he will start blocking 2 or 3 fronts. Will we see some Houses extinct? Perhaps, but I wouldn't put all my money that that will happen inevitably.

I'd vote for Houses Frey and Bolton. They've had some nice winds in their sails lately, but come to think of it they won't last. House Bolton will likely fall pretty harsh, Roose is in a dangerous spot and Ramsay can't rule for shit. The Freys are a different story, I think when Walder Frey dies, all the other male pretenders will want a piece of lordship, thus causing the house to implode.

I'm going with Freys or Boltons too. Of all the houses that are "bad", Bolton is the easiest to die out because it consists of two people. Also honestly I feel like the books would be ruined if the Lannisters die.

I see it happening to House Arryn before any of the others.

They have nobody with experience or direction representing them-- they have only the sickly Sweetrobin, and several obscure relatives who do not carry the name (like Harry the Heir). What's most important, though, is that they are currently merely tools of the manipulators.

So, Arryn will be the first permanent Great House casualty in my opinion; lost not to war, but to subversion, manipulation, and sabotage. Their only hope would be the Lords Declarant or Sansa getting rid of Littlefinger for good, and then making sure Sweetrobin gets some genuine parental guidance... and that doesn't seem likely.

Could be argued that he's already done this with House Stark. Lord; dead. Heir; dead. Lady; undead. Remaining children either presumed dead or scattered to the four winds. Castle; burnt. Lands; gone.

I know everyone wants/expects a resurgence of the Starks...but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.

It's happening to the Tullys: Their lands forfeit, two surviving members, one prisoner and likely to be murdered, another a runaway who's rather old and might not be able to father sons (no viagra in Westeros!)

The Starks, as mentioned, are scattered. They might reemerge, though.

The Baratheons are in a tricky place: Stannis might not survive the war, his daughter is in the eye of the Storm and Tommen & Myrcella are Baratheons in name only (plus, they are prophetized to die as well)

None of the living relatives is called Arryn.

There are distant related Arryns around but even the next in line with different names will simply change their name to ascend to the title.

Surely with the length of time the Starks, Arryns and Lannisters have been in power this will not be the first time something like this has happened.

Don't forget:

"The wolves will come again," said Jojen solemnly.

"And how would you be knowing, boy?"

"I dreamed it."

Arryn(Unless you count good ole Harry), Baratheon, and Grejoy will likely be extinct. Tully, Martell, and Lannister will likely be irreparably damaged to the point they won't be Great Houses anymore maybe Tully and Martell will recover but the Lannisters I see falling into obscurity, Houses Stark, Tyrell, and Targaryen I very much see recovering and becoming the strongest Houses on Westeros, Stark under Rickon and Sansa, Tyrell under Olenna and Maergery, and Targaryen under Jon.
