Greatest battle commanders at the start of ASoIaF

I think Khal Drogo is one of the most underrated battle comanders, considering that he is undefeated in war, led a 40000 strong khallasar before the age of 30 and can make use of horseback archery an unique battle technique that no westeros-born commander can match

    dragonriding ability

I always thought the ability was in every Targaryen as a potential but then you actually needed to bond with a dragon and that was never a certainty. They put dragon eggs in their children's crib in the hopes a bond would develop. During the Dance there were available dragons with no riders and that was the reason they sent the dragonseeds to see which ones would actually bond with one... It worked to a certain degree... So even if we have other Targaryens or Blackfyres (Jon, fAegon, "put your favorite secret Targaryen here") there is no certainty that any of them would bond with Rhaegal or Viserion and become a dragon rider. There's just a good probability it could work. Viserion likes Brown Ben Plum, proving he has indeed Targaryen blood... That said could it go to a full bonding? Let's see with TWoW if it goes there (don't really expect it).

    Anything foreshadowing KL getting burned?

There's mention of wildfire being hidden all over Kl.

    Anything foreshadowing KL getting burned?

Can you give me the quote for this? Interesting observation. But it's a quote, not really foreshadowing. Still, very interesting considering. Maybe JonCon or the fAegon teams tries something like this, but don't succeed (because of the wintry conditions perhaps)?

Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

Continually referring to Bran as "crippled and impotent" is exactly the kind of abusive bigotry that Martin has sought to overturn throughout his work by raising cripples, bastards, and broken things. Think back to that big scene in Dragonstone when the only participant sporting a functional set of block and table was our favorite dwarf? Tells you something. One gets tired of hearing people continuously put down with hate speech. It says far more about the speaker's regressive bigotry than it does about the Summer King himself.

UK Politics: The End of May

That's pretty much exactly what was expected as of this time last week (37% and 20%), let alone the early results, which are actually looking encouraging to me. Brexit really should get the UKIP share, and a good half of the Con vote, so 37% 75/373 declared Brex : 31.7 LD : 19.4 Lab: 16.4 Grn: 10.9 Con: 8.0 SNP+PC: 4.9

Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

Honestly, these last books have been so focused about how some characters rule and the lessons they need to learn that who ends up in the throne should be someone we have seen become a ruler. Otherwise it will make dance and feast 2 stupid books… At present moment only danny or jon (ignoring cersei and euron) would be satisfying. With winds we might add faegon to the list… To me sansa seems to be leading to a behind the scenes leader like LF but I could be wrong. I have no idea how we will have a ruling arcs for other characters...

    Heresy 222 vindication

As we know GRRM favored the Mummers with three "Holy Shit!" moments... D&D "Ok, well that's two, how about number three?" GRRM "Well you know that R+L=J theory?" D&D "Yeah, we'd figured that one out ages ago..." GRRM "Well it doesn't make any difference to anything." D&D "HOLY SHIT!!!" And with that, good night all
  12. Late to the Game

How would you have ended it?

For the most part, I'm OK with where everyone landed but more episodes could have fleshed the story out much better. A few tweaks, though: Cut out the Jaime-sleeps-with Brienne story. OK with Jaime and Cersie dying together, but make the set for the 'discovery' of the bodies more believable. Kill Bronn several episodes ago. Make Sam the Lord of Hornhill with Gilly and the kids. Let all the Dothraki remain dead after running into the AotD, as it visually appeared. It would have made that more of a 'holy crap' moment, and they added nothing to the story from then on. Have Jon and Greyworm fight to the death after Dany is killed, with Jon winning. Have a big reveal of Jon's bloodline to the VIP's of Westeros. Discussion ensues on whether he should be King, or Arya (since they would all be dead if not for her killing the NK). Jon either reluctantly accepts the throne (with Arya and Brad on his council), or willingly goes North to start a new life. OK with the North being independent, after all - they fought the AofD while Dorne and Iron Islands sat home on their butts. And if not for a Northerner (Arya), everyone in Westeros would be dead.

    Samwell as Grand Maester

Thank you! Yet another dumb thing that happened cause that's what D&D wanted. Did Sam somehow go back to the citadel and forge a chain to become GM in time for King Bran? Utterly as ridiculous as King Bran.

With poor Tom being the ineffective Macchiavelli. According to McClownsky. Is Corbyn than the effective prince? So many questions

Robert Baratheon - Not so bad after all

Ha! I knew there was a reason the portrayal of Stannis as 'the' righteous man had failed to convince me! Philip II of Spain! That infamous hag! Our young King Sebastian decided he was going to valorously conquer North Africa and got 'disappeared' in the desert. Philip, son of a previous portuguese king's eldest daughter, maneuvered himself in the portuguese throne, thereby earning himself a realm so large the 'sun never truly set in its breadth'. Grrr.

That ‘kid’ is 35 years old - I was at school with him, and the only surprising thing about his career path since then is that he’s on the political journalism side of things rather than the actual politician side.
  26. Trump alone can fix it Just give him dictatorial powers and let him hire the very best people with dodgy pasts. I wonder, if one were expecting to be raptured and one believed the end times have come, whether climate change would be a priority. Some people also believe that suffering brings people closer to the divine, or that our fate is predestined. And if you take Noah and the Ark literally, than the white male boss guy likes to cleanse the earth of most life forms occasionally.
