  1. If I may ask innocently, does this also mean there's an opposition to a police presence at Pride parades/events for security reasons, not just being involved in the actual event?
  2. No, and it doesn't sound like many people can reach him but those who can are trying to get him a place to stay and enough money for a few months rent and cost of living. And trust me, we're long past him needing to have some therapy. I just hope those that can still communicate with him are having some success because he was posting some pretty dark stuff.
  3. I don't understand Facebook's thinking at all. A friend of mine has been posting about contemplating suicide for a week or so and their decision was not to help him, but to ban him instead, cutting him off from the friends he still has who were trying to help. It's so wrong what they're doing.
  4. This was one of my first takeaways when initially watching the video. There appeared to be several adults at the scene, with as you said one kicking someone and others watching on appearing to encourage what was happening. How are none of these people to blame? If they had actually acted like adults there may have been no reason to even call the police.
  5. Tasers certainly can be effective, but the key is they're not as effective as a lot of people think. As has been mentioned before, their range isn't great and certain clothes null their effects. On top of that sometimes they don't give off a charge and some people aren't impacted that strongly by them. They have a lot of use in many situations, but with the one we're specifically discussing it's not a safe bet using a taser would have prevented the girl in pink from getting stabbed. It's not inevitable, and there's certainly scenarios in which Bryant got shot and survived. On the separate issue of improving, I think a lot of forces are trying to do just that, but the technology might not be there yet and again, the U.S. is unique considering the sheer volume of guns in our society. At this point in time it's hard to see how we could shift to a model more common in Europe, though that shouldn't prevent us from trying over time. Sure, but again, I don't see people here shrugging their shoulders and saying it is what it is.
  6. I honestly used to believe this as well, but I come from a family with a lot of people in the military and law enforcement and they will all swear that it's just not realistic. Even with all that training they still miss a ton and they are human, i.e. they will panic and make mistakes. Aiming for the torso is the easiest target to hit and the most likely to immediately stop a person absent shooting them in the head. The problem here is the amount of uncertainty. You may miss or graze someone and we don't know how each individual will react to getting shot or how much their adrenaline is pumping. They almost certainly are. A while back I posted a link showing the amount of training police receive in various Western countries and the U.S. was a joke compared to basically every European country. Furthermore, our hiring standards were significantly lower than most European countries. So it's really the worst situation where we have undertrained and over armed police treating urban areas like de facto war zones. And what makes it better you might ask? Police recruit heavily from the military, and what could go wrong with taking combat vets and turning them into officers policing the streets?
  7. No, just a rejection that a taser can be just as effective and/or more accurate. It's really not. I actually don't think the people here taking that side are too comfortable with the police taking life. Everyone has said they don't like it and wish it was extremely rare while also acknowledging that there are some circumstances in which it's the only option to prevent someone seriously hurting another person, and that the Bryant example meets that standard for them.
  8. No really. Officers miss at a high rate regardless if it’s a gun or a taser, and the inverse of this is actually what may get Potter off in regards to the shooting of Daunte Wright. Not sure stand your ground or the castle doctrine applies here considering she chased them into the street and she had superior force.
  9. I just finished listening to this and it hit the same notes. These pieces of legislation are searching for a problem that doesn't exist solely to crack down on protests. What really worries me is the language around people using their vehicles to run over protestors if they're scared for their life. I mean, it's possible that murderer from Charlottesville could have used that kind of legislation to justify his actions.
  10. I think all they've learned is that they need to advocate for laws making it illegal to record them and laws that make it harder for the public to see the body cam recordings.
  11. One might say your chain smoking father was a Skatman.
  12. I'm curious how much gender plays a role in this. Can't speak for Europe, but here in the States most young children learn all the swear words quickly just by sitting in the car with their parents during rush hour traffic.
  13. The first major rain of spring is happening here. It's so beautiful outside and the lighting in the clouds looks awesome. It's about time to get the operation up and running.
  14. That's just the thing for me, a couple of plants. I just wouldn't want to deal with that outdoors. I'd rather just do an indoor setup. It's not all that different from having a medium size iguana as a pet. Never tried myself, but I know it's not that hard once you go through a few cycles. It can be a lot of work though even if you only have a few growing stations. I guess it just depends on the space you have. I'm not sure if you've seen the movie The Beach, but one time I did get to walk through a huge field like you see in parts of the film. It was wild. If I had the space to try and grow three square feet legally outdoors, maybe I'd give it a shot for fun. I don't smoke that much anymore, but it would be interesting. Otherwise though it just makes more sense to do what I said above.
  15. You prefer outdoor to indoor if it's going to be what I assume is a small amount? Anyways, it's about time to start setting up my garden as well, and we seem to grow the same things. I want to do more peppers, specifically hot peppers, than last year, so maybe five pots with 3-4 plants in them, and tomatoes of course. I don't think I've ever grown cilantro before @Tears of Lys, but I also live in the Midwest and it can't be hard. It's required in my salsa anyways so I'll give it a shot. It would also be smart for me to learn how to grow lettuce and spinach given I eat both regularly. Just not sure I have the space at the moment.
  16. Just had my first therapy session ever, which may be a bit odd given I have a psych degree. Not sure I gained anything I didn't already know, but it doesn't hurt to talk to someone.
  17. Sadly human history doesn't tend to agree with this, so it falls on those who understand these issues to continuously educate those who don't and it serves as a healthy reminder that even the best of us still have blind spots.
  18. @Ran, Random question. I changed something in my signature a few days ago, and when I go to edit my profile it still says it's changed, yet my old one keeps showing up when I post. Is that typical?
  19. I have so many experiments I want to do with merging various hot peppers in different pots. Putting a ghost pepper plant in a pot with other lesser hot peppers seemed to spike them. I hope I get the same affect when I put one in with the banana peppers. And I'm getting better at growing tomatoes in small spaces. Fresh homemade salsa, here I come (in like three to four months, earliest probably)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  20. Not really. The scandal exploded in late 2009. I graduated HS in 2006, and I think my junior year is when everyone had or wanted that blue flip phone with the swivel camera made popular on MTV (I know privilege, and yes, I had one like a douche). Midway through college almost everyone had a camera phone. I'd lean towards hush money. Jeter is a notorious man whore yet little ever got out. Those infamous gift baskets must be impressive indeed.
  21. Sex addiction is a form of pain relief, and it's clear that injuries are what undid him more than anything else.
  22. His attention to detail is at the very least inconsistent across his interests.
