I find Eddard XV in AGOT, especially the conversation with Lord Varys to be a distinct nod to the similar scene in Dune between Duke Leto I and dr Yueh.

    So much Herbert.

Facedancers. Teenage messiah figure tames massive critters. Acquiring of dodgy stereotype army of native peoples. (Two of them.)  Applied psychotropic substances for said teenage messiah figure. (Two of them) The Undying have a Navigator's Guild feel, the blue lips and general transhuman aura.  Not entirely sold on a Maester/mentat equivalency, but Syrio Forel had elements of Duncan Idaho.  The Iron Bank as CHOAM.

But then, Herbert was deliberately echoing all sorts of influences himself.

Glad to see other fans of Dune.

Faceless Men are so close to Facedancers it hurts.

I wonder if Weirwood paste or Shade of the Evening has an properties of spice. Other than seemingly granting or improving ones powers.

  2. Also was doing some Darry research and found this.

Outside, she found song of a very different sort. Rymund the Rhymer sat by the brewhouse amidst a circle of listeners, his deep voice ringing as he sang of Lord Deremond at the Bloody Meadow.

And there he stood with sword in hand,

    the last of Darry's ten...

And red the grass beneath his feet,

and red his banners bright, and red the glow of the setting sun that bathed him in its light,

"Come on, come on," the great lord called,

    "my sword is hungry still."

And with a cry of savage rage, They swarmed across the rill...

The Battle of Bloody Meadow is a nickname of the Battle of Tewkesbury.  One of the decisive battles of the War of the Roses.

  3. "Ned eased himself slowly back onto the hard iron seat of Aegon's misshapen throne. His eyes searched the faces along the wall. "Lord Beric," he called out. "Thoros of Myr. Ser Gladden. Lord Lothar." The men named stepped forward one by one. "Each of you is to assemble twenty men, to bring my word to Gregor's keep. Twenty of my own guards shall go with you. Lord Beric Dondarrion, you shall have the command, as befits your rank." ← from GoT chapter 43

Was ser Gladden foreshadowing of Ambush at Mummer's Ford?
In LoTR, ford at Gladden Fields was place where Isildur, his three sons & 200 knights were ambushed by orcs and the Ring was lost... http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Battle_of_the_Gladden_Fields

Not sure but certainly could be. Good catch.

  4. This is 100% correct. Id suggest anyone who read stannis as a "hero" does not get his character and was reading the books wrong. He had always been at "jeoffery" level in the books too. Atleast jeoffery was his own man and not a puppet .

Yea no. Joffrey was played by many better players and is far worse than Stannis. Not sure what books you are reading. At least Stannis to trying to do the right thing, even if he is wrong.

I think it will be Stannis's wife and the red woman that do it. Stannis himself will not know about it till later.

    Agreed.

  5. Hello all,

You can call me the First Spear of Dorne or FSD for short. I discovered ASOIAF in college and have been hooked ever since. I have lurked here for awhile making sure I am caught up on most of the current theories crackpot or otherwise. Working on my 4th reread and looking to hopefully be contributing some of my own theories soon. Loving the show as well but the books will always be better. Huge fan of Dorne but I'm sure you already knew that.

Like everyone else I hoping that Winter will come soon because we can only dream of Spring.

  6. They were just practice pits for the slave owner

    Ah that makes more sense.

The High Sparrow totally made this episode. His scenes with Olenna and Cersei are the best. I was worried the faith storyline would lose it's effect without the kettleblacks but the show managed to pull it off. Also surprised that the first sand snake scene with nudity ended up being their best scene yet. Psycho Tyene jumped from background scenery to be the most interesting of the three so far. If Tyene and her poisons become important in the story later on (When she's in KL), then this was a good enough way to establish that. There may still be hope for Dorne after all.

High Sparrow has been brilliant this season. Nice to see some Sand Snake development.
