The Great British Bake Off 2016

Do you all think the change of networks might have something to do with the changes? I know the switch happened a couple seasons ago, but they may have waited to make changes until they knew it still had good ratings.

US Politics. Trump Crossing the Dnieper. Alea Iacta Est.

Mitch is only loyal to himself and his hold on power, I think if he knew there was support for a Trump conviction because enough Republicans turned against him, he would hold a trial, likewise if the trial couldn't get close to 2/3 I think he would hold one to "exonerate" Trump, I think the situation he's most likely to try not to hold a trial is if the result would be 60-something to convict but still below the threshold, because that can't be as easily spun as exoneration and would mean at least 13 Republicans voted to convict. i read somewhere recently that even though the Constitution doesn't say he's required to hold a trial, but that the Senate rules do and this isn't one of the majority can change it rules, so if that's true he may have to hold a trial even if he doesn't want to.
  3. I think this is the type of thing he would have done at almost any time (maybe not right in the beginning before he realized quite how much power he had when people (the so called adults in the room) were managing him a lot more closely).
  4. One part of the appendix to the whistleblower complaint that struck as particularly important if true is "this was "not the first time" under this Administration that a Presidential transcript was placed into this codeword-level system solely for the purpose of protecting politically sensitive—rather than national security sensitive—information." It's possible the other transcripts are more benign than Ukraine one appears to be (keeping in mind that the administration released a memo, not the actual transcript), however it could also be the tip of the iceberg. And the House now knows exactly what to subpoena.
  5. If he runs and loses I doubt he would get a pardon from his Democratic successor, but there's a good chance they would decline to prosecute him for sake of the country's unity or healing or some other nonsense that continues the message that presidents who commit crimes aren't punished. He probably will get impeached, but right now it seems unlikely that the Senate will convict him and remove him from office, if that did happen he might be pardoned by Pence. If he resigns he'll almost certainly get a pardon.

Canadian Politics: Revenge of the small minds

No one can seriously claim the cross isn't a Christian symbol, it's the ultimate Christian symbol. I agree it's not likely to change, but it represents a level of hypocrisy that shows the secularism law is more about discriminating against religious minorities than anything else.

Canadian Politics: Revenge of the small minds

How can Quebec expect anyone to take their strong secularism seriously when their provincial flag is literally a big Christian symbol with a few smaller Christian symbols for extra decoration?

There was a section about how the Judaism of Ethiopian Jews is different and that they didn't have Talmud, it listed some specific differences including the ritual immersion thing (mikvah), and that part was flat wrong. Orthodox women use them every month and many orthodox men use them regularly, especially before holidays.

Why did you like such an outdated article? It's more than 35 years old and those facts are no longer true. The majority of Ethiopian Jews now live in Israel and Israel carried out some now famous operations to bring them to Israel (Sudan and also the using many planes to airlift thousands of Ethiopian Jews in one day). Also just as an aside, unlike what that article said, ritual purification by immersion in water is a major part of rabbinic Judaism.

US Politics: Flaming the Flamenco Flamingo

Why does Buttigieg think he'll be able to get congress to take back its blanket authorization of force when Obama tried to do the same thing and they wouldn't take back that power?

I know right, they're missing some really obvious arguments.
  12. The Nazis were inspired a lot by the US, by our eugenics policies, by Jim Crow laws, by all the slavery and genocide and yes of course all that "Nordic" nonsense.
  13. Eugenics was always disgusting, including in an American context. It involved force and deception in sterilizations. It was extremely racist, classist and ableist. It led to one of the worst Supreme Court decisions of all time (certainly top 5), Buck v. Bell (1927) which has never been overturned and has the disgusting sentiment "three generations of imbeciles are enough" about Carrie Buck, her mother and daughter and Carrie Buck herself likely had a normal level of intelligence. Frankly defending this is either a sign of ignorance or abhorrent morals.

The world hasn't blinked twice at China locking up over a million Uighur Muslims in "re-education" (concentration) camps in Xinjiang which is a much bigger human rights violation, Hong Kong may be more popular and sympathetic to westerners, but no one is going to do anything if they can't even be bothered to use strong words about the concentration camps.
  15. Wouldn't the UK have to set up immigration control on that border so the people who have free movement into Ireland don't also have free movement into the UK? Wasn't immigration one of the big issues for leavers? Also I keep seeing leavers claim a hard Brexit won't violate the Good Friday agreement, however if partisans believe it violates the spirit of the agreement and end the ceasefire does that really matter? I'm pretty sure if the IRA starts terrorist activities again*, that the UDA and UVF will as well and also your army would return. *Yes I know some splinter IRA groups never stopped, but the main IRA did.
