From the shows portrayal, they are basically a Children of the Forest superweapon gone rogue (or working as intended but overly efficiently so), that has found a way to multiply itself. I think they are still following their original directive: KILL ALL HOOMANS! It's basically Skynet, but with magic. They are just mindless Dragonglassbots with no personal motivation.
