  1. I’m just saying we’re talking about the Middle Ages. And we are talking about Cersei. Yes Robert was abusive in that moment. The uppity bitch WAS asking for it, she baited him knowing she’d get a slap and used it to get heat she wanted. Robert was no monster, and not cool, but he was a meathead. She was worse. Her instigations and plans were intentional, his were reactive. You tell me which is worse or more dangerous.
  2. well, we see him SLAP her (I'd say there's a difference to BEATING her), but it's Cersei...y'know, most evil witch in the series...so...give him a pass? seriously though, it's not okay for either spouse to physically hit one another, but nor is it okay to go beyond any limit in your words and not expect something coming. She wanted her way and knew how to get it and was willing to egg him to the point of a slap. She knew he'd regret it and give her what she wanted. She's a manipulator grand master.
  3. Nice scenario. I'd say Stannis would win this hands down though Tywin isn't a bad tactician and Robb did well while underrated. Some were proven inept, some never got a shot, but didn't have an reason to think they'd be great battle commanders. I think the main thing is that Stannis waited out a long time before commiting himself to the field and when he did, his strategies were largely smart ones (even if he fell for well laid traps). Though there are many variables (do they fight on land or would Balon keep to the sea with his 20,000), I still think under any circumstance, Stannis is more likely to win. Who do you think?
  4. never underestimate the power of a powerful old guy and an attractive young woman to go along with other power hungry members of an entourage. nasty business.
  5. Theon isn't going to die. Not here or in the near future. He will make it through by...well, not the skin of his teeth, but y'know, by a slim margin. I'm sure eventually he'll die, but again, not this way.
  6. I think Euron is creepy AF and everyone sees it. He's got a vision and confidence which can be attractive, but I think he moves fast and takes what he wants and in the case of the young lady he takes into his bed, she gets a very short taste of rebellion and power while seemingly in the conquoror's favour before quckly getting cast aside (in the worst possible way). Euron could no more woo Dany than Victarian or a Joffrey could.
  7. I'm sorry to discount the fun part of your theory, or just to focus on this part. I just think that any weapon or weapon combination can be defeated by anything depending on who is wielding it or the circumstances of the fight. Jon has seen the Lord of Bones and was confident he would beat him in a fight (and he very well might have if it was really him). Jon never saw Mance fight (or just wasn't ready for Rattle Shirt to fight like Mance), and so the lesson was to "not be overconfident", or "to always be properly prepared". A fighter who is familiar with a foe may switch tactics or styles to confuse them, or fight differently with a different weapon, etc. Jon is/was a good fighter but has been defeated at times by more experienced fighters. but to say that Jon needs to part with a Valyrian steel bastard sword and learn to fight with a 2 handed special greatsword I think goes too far and has too many variables. Jon would have to abandon his sword and start from the beginning learning to use not only a great sword with different tactics, but then to be ready to put in his hands, a specific greatsword that has different properties than a normal one. Likely much lighter and powerful which affects balance and expected resistances. (I'm no expert, just sayin'). I just don't think it's plausible though the idea is fun.
  8. Neither Dunk nor Vic probably attended a lesson of formal education in their life. Vic was born to a boat and learned his craft from day 1. He's as smart a sailor or commander of a ship as you're like to see. I wouldn't say he's a tactician, but he understands his strength and how to win a fight at sea with a fleet. He also knows how to command men, reward them for loyalty, and how to read the environment (amongst other sea skills). He won't win any spelling contests, but taking a lesson from Star Wars, I'm pretty sure anyone better at spelling than him who find themselves in a spelling contest with him would be thinking "let the Wookie win". Dunk is lowborn and young and learning what he can to survive as a hedge knight. The only thing he's got on his side are good genetics. He isn't particularly smart but he's learned some street smarts to get by and has become good at reading people and how to stand up for himself (and others). He's got integrity over smarts, but in his game, it's enough and he allies himself with smarter people. Good move.
  9. Robert is not "the Baratheons" beyond his own lifespan. Yes he was a failure as a ruler but didn't want to rule, just wanted to kill Rhaegar. he wasn't groomed to rule and so yes, he was lousy at it, but to say "the Baratheons" had a chance to rule and blew it is like picking one single Targaryen ruler and saying "the Targs" were good/bad rulers based on it. 300 years of Targaryen rule gave us a greater sample size, but still good rulers and bad, with highs and lows. Maegor, Aerys, Aegon the 4th vs (don't feel like picking out the good ones). just saying, in any country or realm's history, we can choose a narrative and support it. A well groomed leader with a plan and vision who makes the right allies with strong self-protection can create a strong legacy but after they're gone, no matter how well you've tried to create a good succession, your off-spring or intended successor may ruin your plans when they try to make the realm fit their own identity and vision (if they truly have it).
  10. Dunno why I'm bothering to post here but call it holiday boredom Everyone involved with the Red Wedding will be having a rough day at some point soon. Roose hasn't done anything illegal...did you say "lately"? You can twist the situation around and around until it fits the narrative you want, but he fought for the Starks and when it suited him he turned his cloak and killed his king for a reward. You can hate on Rob, Jon, and anyone else, but there isn't anyone in the story who can claim innocence or righteousness in their actions without someone from the other side taking issue with it, which is why this is a compelling story. That being said, Roose is F'd, the Karstarks, the Umbers, the Dustin's, the whomever else's are all going down. Roose SHOULD be able to hold Winterfell against Stannis but it stands to reason that Stannis will have a way in if he survives the Battle of Ice. The Manderly initiative should see to that. Fat Walda and her Bolton baby along with all living Freys will meet a brutal end whether from the North directly, Dany's justice when she comes, Arya, the Brotherhood, or whoever else wants a piece. The house will be extinguished along with the Boltons. Nobody will miss them except you (original poster), but hold onto your hope, maybe one of your faves will make it through)...but like Fat Walda, you may have chosen the wrong side.
  11. I sincerely doubt Martin regrets killing anyone. Painting yourself into a corner I would say is more likely that he doesn’t have a point of view for something he wants so it’s hard to advance part of a storyline. With Theon out of winterfell there’s nobody POV inside, I think only cersei in kings landing, and some other places of significance. So many in mereen and that may be the issue. The mereneese knot was that he needed more point of view for some elements to play out with good detail, so he has plenty there now, but that leaves some really complex areas light in POV. The battle of blood has Aeron and maybe Sam, not a lot. Battle of ice has Theon and Asha and they’re in the same tent practically. The wall only Mel depending on how Jon goes. So as much as people complain that there are too many POV characters, it’s a rough job.
  12. I think the main reason is that taxes to cross the bridge are not so horrible and small folk who need the bridge for simple reasons do, or use other small rope or raft crossings depending on season. the rare issue that comes up is if an army wants to use it and in this case a rebel army. Allowing the crossing for money or a separate deal has consequences which make the crossing army consider other options and wish there were multiple ways across. so the Frey’s have a monopoly because to e river sucks, they got the best spot and it wasn’t worth it under basic every day conditions to build another. In this case I don’t think it’s so strange. there aren’t many bridges to cross from the states to Canada or back as it’s in one territories best interest to have fewer places to cross
  13. You list the failures of 1 and 2 for each in the past but say “will” for the 3. Why can’t Jaime be successful in the future? You didn’t mention any of tyrions many failures, just a future success. It’s not that I disagree with you that your number 3’s will be successful, but I’d be very surprised if Jaime and Jon aren’t remembered as successful by the end of the story too. this story has always been about perspective too. Dany could achieve all of the things we might want of her and still be the devil in many eyes and in many ways.
  14. yes, however my point is that how can you say it’s isn’t actually him doing his duty as intended? He says this is my duty, then does the action. If he feels it IS his duty then he’s doing that, if he is just saying that it’s his duty but actually feels it’s just what he wants, we can’t tell the difference. But if he’s to be king, and more than that, Azor ahai, then all his actions ARE his duty and he’s doing them, even when they suck.
  15. I’d agree but did he not inform Robert? My understanding was that he had informed Robert or attempted to with Jon Arryn. Arryn died and stannis lost the chance or felt that the message could not get through and his best course of action was to prepare to return with force. What you suggest is just as possible though and it’s a good point to question if he did all he could to inform Robert. I say that based on results of him informing the realm of the big secret and how that turned out for his integrity, that he did what was wise and then prepared a force to take action against cersei and Jaime. My opinion.
  16. Prove what? Stoneheart isn’t letting them go, but brienne seemingly has agreed to bring Jaime to spare herself and companions. She’s brought Jaime. Jaime isn’t going to let anyone kill him. Stoneheart isn’t going to accept any rational explanation. There has to be a fight and while the two of them are outnumbered, it’s plausible that the conversation combined with brienne’s honourabke actions, convince Thoros and others that killing the pair is not justifiable and the brotherhood turns on itself and is divided. I see Jaime and brienne surviving the encounter as they’re capable and important characters while Stoneheart serves little other purpose outside of killing Jaime (not that I can’t see her involved with other facets of the story) as she’s stuck on revenge for the red wedding and killing more Frey’s is fine but not necessary exclusively by her (and stannis/Manderly). Jaime was the last name she heard before dying and once this is resolved, I think Jaime AND brienne have plenty of more story to be a part of rather than this small but interesting character.
  17. I don’t disagree with any particular points but I’d say that duty is enough. Want or not, all his actions can be justified if he feels it’s his duty to be king. Duty comes first to him it seems in all things, and so he would do any questionable thing or immoral thing from another perspective to be king because it’s justified. It’s possible he just plain wants it, but as he’s stated it’s his duty and he is shown to be dutiful with lots of evidence, it’s enough for me to say his desires are irrelevant.
  18. You really think Jaime is getting hanged? By Stoneheart? They’ll get out of it. Brienne brought him, fulfilled her promise. Now it’s game on and the brotherhood has SOME honorable dudes left.
  19. Pretty sure they’re going down with the upcoming Jaime encounter. However it plays out, I don’t see Jaime and brienne dying, and so I think it will end there. And if they’re all dead and or dispersed, there’s no organization that has to pay back any debts (a joke anyway), and any characters left living will be of enough worth to join up and merge with another worthy group.
