  1. If that is part of the bill, that would be hilarious. The average employee salary we are talking about here is $39K CAD. 60% of these workers get laid off in the summer and go on EI. During other school closures (Christmas and March breaks), they have to use vacation or sick days. These are workers are the very bottom of the pyramid. Mr. Ford and his toad Lecce thinks they are the Big Dicks, swinging around the threat of fines. Fuck both of them. Close the schools and let them try to collect.
  2. I hope the union strikes on Friday, despite any legislation. I have no idea what I will do (kids school will close), but I don't care. Fuck this government, using the notwithstanding clause to impose the contract to avoid arbitration is fucking cowardly bullshit. It is a bad precedent, and will likely be used again. Probably as soon as a few months when the teachers threaten a strike. It is just so incredibly stupid. The compromise for many years has been that strikes are a pain, but by legalizing them, they are predictable. If all of a sudden you legislate away the union membership's rights, you put their back against the wall and invite unpredictable labour action. why should the union follow the law if the government will simply abuse the process by stacking the deck? Fuck 'em
  3. Exactly. And also that is probably exactly what will happen in Formula 1.
  4. My grandparents lived in Canada for decades and didn't speak any English at all. So no, I don't find the dragon keeper only speaking Valyrian as very odd at all.
  5. I thought all these people Fucking Trudeau were part of his Lebensraum super human program?
  6. To be honest, I have no idea. Sometimes it is all over the map. For example, I just looked at AbeBooks - a softcover copy of Hero of Ages by Sanderson, and shipping to Canada (from Maryland) = $37.34 USD for 1st book, + $13.55 USD per additional book. Then I look at a copy of Well of Ascension (in Texas) and it is $7.99 USD. Biblio looks more reasonable. I see softcover of same book for $5-$20.99 USD to Canada, depending on the listing and where it is located. eBay is the worst for shipping costs, in my experience. I think because lot of vendors use the global shipping program, which is obscene for pricing to Canada.
  7. Yeah, shipping for books is just absurd. Even here in Canada, unless it is amazon, it is often $30-$40 to ship a book from USA to Canada.
  8. Maybe it is just speaking to me perfectly. His novels all meditate on themes in very evocative ways. Lately I have been thinking a lot about the past, choices made, etc. All of those are big primary themes in this book. I also haven't yet read Under Heaven and River of Stars (despite owning both), so perhaps those will be favourites one day.
  9. Really excited about this one! Beautiful cover. I am actually finally reading A Brightness Long Ago right now, and it is fantastic. I've read almost all of his work, and it is definitely up there among the best.
  10. What many scholars believe these days is more nuanced. It not being a matter of Christianity displacing polytheistic religions. That as a Christianity grew and expanded, it adopted more and more pagan ideas. And as Christianity expanded, polytheistic religions adopted more and more Christian ideas over time.
  11. Totally agree with Kal, the 30-year jump is the weakest part of the series. It makes sense that it is necessary (to setup the colonies), but the lack of personal change in that time is a bit implausible.
  12. Great episode. Overall plot didn't move much, but I like when this show doesn't rush and let's its characters work. Lots of good scenes. Bobbie/Amos with the music, good touch. Holden/Naomi scene was excellent. Camina Drummer. Belta lik pashang! No idea how they will resolve Laconia.
  13. I have ten days won. Lament and be woeful.

  15. I shouldn't be surprised, I suppose, but I take it that none of you complaining regarding wooden swords & helmets has ever played lacrosse. I played for a long, long time, and I assure you, it still fucking hurts, and it will still knock you down and out. But hey, maybe I'm just a cravenly wussy compared to you virile armchair warriors. If any of you wants to test your theory, we can meet at a con. I'll loan you my helmet, and proceed take a swing at you with my stick. It will end well.
  16. Vote or Die, Bichas

  17. just completed seven consecutive days of bikram yoga

  18. wants to know why robots always say 'I. Am. A. Robot.' Uh, duh. We know. You're all chrome-like and non-biological.

  19. Asking that question is the first prerequisite for entry to the NOOBcentration Camps. But fear not! Work will show you the answer!
  20. I think we are nearing 800 posts on this topic ...
  21. Sorry, but your list is flawed. We have been missing hovercars since we lost them in the muds of France.
  22. Protected naming conventions are no game, I assure you. For instance, the Vidalia onion ...
  23. Spencer Rice!?! Seriously? No way! You must be working for the evil Kenny! For the record, both are from Toronto, and are great guys to hang around in person. Their show is also hilarious.
