  1. You're forgetting to include physical and sexual assault and regular accusations of theft from dementia patients.

  3. https://archive.li/kjZgG Controversy over the weekend in the rugby community, where a black presenter was racially abused amongst the crowd (10,000 or so) leaving the stadium. Presenter is obviously unhappy about the abuse, and seems to be even more unhappy that no-one had his back at the time, just messages of support after the event. All fairly standard bystander effect stuff. Obviously, this is something I was aware of previously, and I've previously wondered what I would do, but this one came at a time/place where I actually had some time to look into it a little further, rather than just running hypotheticals through my own brain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect But the incident got me questioning what I would do. In this specific, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have time to actually react any differently to all those others who probably couldn't believe their ears at the time, but I did come across this excellent article on how to overcome it, and how to offer help, whilst not (or not necessarily) putting yourself in harms way. Seems a good bit of training, and I thought I'd share, and maybe discuss. https://righttobe.org/guides/bystander-intervention-training/ Obviously, the article goes way further into all of this.

  5. I was with you until then. There is no good case for leaving the ECHR. Exactly which ECHR secured human rights are you willing to give up?

  7. Clear the minefields by... just running through them... in the face of artillery shells and machine gun fire... It certainly sounds like A way to use a population size bonus.

  9. Wartime equivalent of sticks vs steel, or arrows vs guns Just ask the Native Americans, or the natives of Africa or the Pacific how that goes
  10. Dorries must be spitting feathers that Cameron's made it to the lords ahead of her. And he wasn't even pwomised! Poor, poor, deluded Dorries.
  11. Please, please, please tell me that the last 13 years have "just" been a dream. A horrible, horrible dream. But that it's okay to wake up again now?
  12. As far as I can tell, the score is 92-2 to the counterprotestors
  13. NVM Sorry, I forgot my "try not to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent" rule. I've remembered again now
  14. https://news.sky.com/story/fighting-reported-as-people-shouting-england-til-i-die-try-to-reach-cenotaph-13005216 Clashes at the Cenotaph this morning - you'll never guess whether this is those marching for peace (away from the Cenotaph), or those self-identifying as hooligans and neo-nazis... Pity it's not particularly amusing.
  15. Do they still think it's at the Cenotaph? And at 11.00am? So the neo-nazis can gather there to defend the "true meaning of armistice day" and defend the memorial against those calling for peace? (at the wrong place and the wrong time) Whilst being supported by the party of Churchill? I'm sure London's Jewish community will feel so much safer, knowing the the neo-nazis have their back... My irony filter may just blow a fuse.

  17. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/nov/04/plans-to-redefine-extremism-would-include-undermining-uk-values " fear legitimate groups and individuals will be branded extremists." That would be a feature, not a bug.
  18. yeah, but that's £33 from hundred, maybe thousands of other landlords on their books
  19. What do you expect? he wants us to be America, worshipping wealth, and all that goes along with that - from privatised health, poor people starving and pedestrians considered an underclass (though he may not go as far as gun ownership - probably because he'd fear a revolution than any ethical qualms though)
  20. I do think that major constitutional change should require a super-majority (or 50%+1 of the electorate, rather than of those who chose to vote). But you can't rewrite the rules just because you feel like it.
