  1. One of many threads regarding the actual impact on Free Speech (hint: protection of speech from government retribution not censorship, as conservatives often confuse). More relevant detail: https://www.techdirt.com/2022/04/26/twitters-legal-team-has-been-an-aggressive-defender-of-free-speech-will-that-continue-under-musk/
  2. We could before. You still haven't provided any examples of freeze peach limitations that you found objectionable -- particularly those were Twitter was more restrictive than other platforms (Meta, YouTube, etc.)
  3. None of this makes any sense at all. Twitter will either have very few changes or will die as an unusable service for a lot of people. Freeze peach arguments are mostly dead on the vine -- private actor and what not, not a public entity. Most of the 'banned' speech is harassment, hatespeech, and harmful disinformation. I've yet to see any examples of topics or dialogues that are banned and contribute to public discussion in a valuable and meaningful way.
  4. Since when do more police solve more crime? Or, more specifically, larger police budgets? Evidence that curtailing proactive policing can reduce major crime: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-017-0211-5
  5. Age comes for us all eventually. Crazy that he's 37. I feel terrible for Mariner fans -- what an insane gut punch. Their bullpen has been so good all year and to blow it there -- ugh. Should've left Gilbert in there longer.
  6. Welp. Didn't hit for me*. Oh well - glad others enjoyed it. *Additional context, it's my Dad's favorite movie and one of mine too (at least for awhile). So, I've probably seen Top Gun at least 30 times (starting before I could talk).
  7. Sorry! For example, I found the piano sing-along (and his attire and his call-sign) was very cringe. As was the Iceman TTS scene. 100% Also, Charlie >> Penny. Jennifer Connelly was charming but a wasted character.
  8. Finally saw this -- it was not worth the $6.99 rental. Felt like fanfic or a TV movie version of Top Gun. The homage/flashbacks were painful to watch -- "hey audience, THIS is why this scene is significant. 'member this? 'member this?"
  9. Small towns, cities, anywhere is all the same with policing in America.
  10. What makes someone willing and capable of beating another person?
  11. Yes, police unions are unique from every other union in that they protect their members from accountability and criminal penalty. It breaks a fundamental assumption trusted in, foolishly so, with public authorities.
  12. That's terrible - I'm glad it's getting notice. I mean, this is unreformable -- I have no idea how it's possible to retrain and restrain police. Getting rid of QI is imperative. That - alone with thuggish union support - allows police in the US to act with impunity.
  13. ffs. Abolish prisons for all but violent adults. There needs to be another solution that doesn't begat more crime.
  14. The boxer love Currently in an apartment that does not allow dogs - devastating. Although, we don't have a good place for a puppy as we're on the third floor without outdoor space. Soon we will though...
  15. The message is: You endanger our safety. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/15/nyregion/nyc-pride-nypd-banned.html
  16. They are being asked to not wear the uniform of their job that has attacked, brutalized, and disrespected their community. Being a cop is not an identity - it's a job, a choice. Eta- 'd lol
  17. Welcome to march out of uniform. Not welcome to provide "security". The private security to be hired is planned to be trained in best practices for interacting with LGBTQ and minority communities including de-escalation training. (...you know, what police ought to do) The NYPD should view this as an indictment of their ability, and trust, to "protect and serve" instead whining about being excluded.
  18. Police failures in suburban Massachusetts while (not) investigating the death of a young Black girl who was gay. https://www.vox.com/2021/5/15/22417396/death-mikayla-miller
  19. Especially considering that history of the Stone Wall riots that were in response to violent police raids of gay bars. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/01/an-amazing-1969-account-of-the-stonewall-uprising/272467/ I've said it before, Police need to reckon with the fact that they are not liked or trusted after years of visibly brutalizing innocent people. That trust has to be earned again after public accountability.
  20. Another recent example of police de-escalation. These payouts must start coming from pensions or police budgets.
  21. Another weapon needed to be removed from circulation among police - more justification as to why tear gas is banned for war (...but not domestically???)
