  1. True that :) I have AGOT and COK (Sub) and want to have Storm as well as it is the last truly great book in the series. I'm not so keen on forking over lots of cash for books that I consider mediocre (Feast and Dance).
  2. Be careful not to succumb to a fallacy here. Only because one person was willing to pay $6k for a SUB set, that doesn't mean it is worth that amount. What if someone with a lot of money on his hands buys the $12,5k set on Abebooks (yes, it's still listed there *lol*) - are all sets then worth that amount? Of course not. We will see the true value of the sets when people try to sell them in greater numbers (in the spring of 2017 at the latest is my guess, during the last HBO season). Right now, I can't see a SUB set without the MMs going for more than $5-$5.5k in general. Aberrations in both directions of the price scale can happen of course :)
  3. 6k for a matching SUB set is a bit high IMO but not outrageously high (like the guy who tried in vain to sell a SUB set + MM ACOK for 7k on ebay). It's always best to sell during a season though, during off-season the market is really bad. It makes me wonder what will happen after the HBO show has run its course and the general hype is over. I expect quite a steep decline in prices.
  4. The value is always what someone is willing to pay for and thus varies, especially with these books. That aside, my estimate is about $ 3.000-3.500. With the matching ASOS it would jump to $ 5.000-5.500 but I assume you know that already ;)
  5. Nice one, althanis  But I (kind of) understand the plight Justinian is in. He has to buy the new book - otherwise his lettered set is broken and devalues significantly. He could of course buy the new book and re-sell it at once for a hefty profit as althanis suggested but then his lettered set would be broken as well so he can't do that. So he must buy it and keep it. So where's the problem you ask? It still increases the total worth of his set, right? Well, this depends. The price for a lettered set isn't measured by the price the individual books carry but by the rarity of the set itself. So it doesn't really matter if the set includes 6 or 7 books as long as it is unbroken and very rare. The last time a lettered set was sold the price was (to my knowledge) about $15.000 and that was before the new Sub editions of Game and Clash. I have my doubts if these new lettered editions will raise the price of the set to $21.000, probably it will STILL be $15.000 regardless of the new additions. The price that people are willing to pay might even drop below that after the HBO show is done and interest ist starting to wane in the series. So yes, Justinian has reasons to moan. He is forced to buy all new editions Subterranean is churning out without the guarantee that it will increase the net worth of his collection.
  6. The MM CoK is somehow the unloved puppy of the litter. Any guess how high it might go? My bet is $500-600.
  7. Ah, thanks for the clarification, coreywt. Btw speaking of high prices for those books, can somebody shed some light on those two offers from abebooks? Some obscure super rare edition I missed or plainly ridiculous? Regarding the description I strongly tend to the latter :) Storm of Swords (Hardback reissue) Item Description: Harper Voyager, 2011. Book Condition: Fair. (Reissue). N/A. Ships from the UK. Former Library book. Shows definite wear, and perhaps considerable marking on inside. Price: US$ 4,033.50 Item Description: Paperback. 8. And gobadchicken has already started hawking copies of Sub Game of Thrones on ebay for over $1000 a piece *lol* edit: approx. $1700 in a bundle with Clash
  9. So, the lettered set on ebay (books 1 to 4) sold for $5800 , that's less than $1500 per book. Good price for a broken set?
  10. Sure :cool4: Maybe a serious collector fancies it, you never know. Good luck!
  11. This one is interesting because the seller also sells the matching MM Clash of Kings in another auction, starting bid $ 450.
  12. Your entire 401k? What's that supposed to mean - impress me with your business savvy? Then better save your breath and stick to books and try to justify your "economic" plan of buying lone editions once again. Because it simply doesn't work out. The prices of these lone editions are simply too high. That is the reason the "much coveted" ASOS on ebay is a stinker and no one buys it. And I would be very careful with your prediction of constantly raising values of these books and sets. Right now ASOIAF is hot and there is a demand for these special editions. Wait two more years and see the popular interest wane in the HBO show and George's failure to publish Winds of Winter - and prices will drop drastically. So if you are into speculative investment I would serioulsy consider selling them in the short-term. If you are just into beautiful books like me, then you won't care either way and keep them.
  13. It's not economics nor cunning, it's plain asinine. You neglect the substantial risk of losing money big time on the lone books you are buying. But by all means, go ahead, there are two MM Clash of Kings up for grabs at abebooks. Have been for quite some time, so it appears - just waiting for you ;)
  14. Right now, it seems they are sold-out. But maybe it is only temporary (could be because a lot of people are ordering right now). I am glad my order went through and I will FINALLY have one of the famous Holy Grail limited editions in my hands!!
