    Popular shows you quit on

This can’t be a common opinion can it? I thought the consensus was that the earlier seasons were pretty weak. The Kazon, Neelix and Kes ... not their strongest stuff. I think the later writing got lazier, but better. Lazier in that they fell back on writing for Janeway, Seven and the Doctor, and brought the Borg in. But the episodes were generally better. I forget what period Species 8472 and the Hirogen were, that was all pretty good though.
  2. Enterprise’s whole remit was as a prequel, it set out to explore what Starfleet was like before all this technology and how the Federation came to be. Discovery has only been hampered by it, a story of a Klingon War would be unequivocally better if we weren’t constantly asking ‘how are they gonna tie this up with TOS?’, the spore drive would be better, the Red Angel would be better. Discovery exists in spite of its time period, I can’t think of an example where it’s cleared up anything we already knew about it.
  3. There were. I can’t remember if it was posted here or somewhere, but there’s a brilliant newspaper article about TNG before it aired that completely misunderstands what the show even is, I’ll have a look for it. EDIT: Here it is, image 2 of 5 if you scroll down. Why they seem convinced Geordi is replacing Spock I don’t know. I guess there wasn’t really a precedent for this kind of thing back then, it wasn’t a spin-off as it didn’t have any of the same characters. People seemed to take the news that it could only be a snub, like it was rebooting the whole thing.
  4. I don’t think this is official, more of my own piecing together of the timeline, but: Bryan Fuller wanted to do an anthology show ala Fargo, and wanted to start 10 years before TOS and then move onto other periods; the big gap between TOS and TNG, and maybe post VOY. This is how the production started, but then CBS bottled it and said no, we want a continuing series. Production was too far gone on the whole look of the show by then so the show is now stuck in what was supposed to be a temporary time-frame. Fuller didn’t want it, CBS didn’t want it, the fans didn’t want it. But here we are.
  5. They aren’t lying, that isn’t really possible. They own the universe, if they say it’s in the same timeline, then it is. If they buy the rights to Spongebob Squarepants, and declare that canon, then we’ve just gotta accept that too. It frustrates me no end though. The only way to square it in your head is as a visual reboot; it clearly doesn’t look like it matches up with the rest of Trek, but as far as events and characters go, it isn’t a reboot, it’s a prequel. So visual reboot, not actual reboot. It’s hard to overstate how much this shackles the series though, and unnecessarily so I would say. We know what can and cannot happen to Pike, Spock, Sarek, the Enterprise, the technology of the spore drive, Section 31, the Klingon empire, the Federation as a whole. ST:D has inherited all the negatives of being a prequel, but can’t really use any of the positives without being accused of leaning too hard on TOS material (which it already is). Which is a shame as they’re showing what a Star Trek series can look like with a modern budget. I think the Ba’ul are one of the most accomplished single-episode species we’ve ever seen, the planet made use of real locations but still felt alien, they have an original predator-prey ecosystem, their ships weren’t anything like any federation ships, or their interiors ... they felt, well, alien. Makes a nice change from the “stick something on their foreheads, give their ships a different front bit and use that same city backdrop we always use” from the TNG era.

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

Interesting. I just booked my ticket, which reminded me that when Force Awakens came out, I was able to set up email notifications the minute they came on sale. UK people: anyone know any cinemas that do that now? I can’t for the life of me remember how I did that. I’ve taken the day off for Avengers and I’ll be sincerely pissed off if I have to settle for a shit seat. I’ve signed up for Vue Insider which sends one out about the forthcoming films that week, but I don’t really wanna go to the Vue. I signed up to the Showcase emails but didnt get one about Captain Marvel, which isn’t promising.
  7. I’m not sure if my expectations of television have changed and Star Trek was always like this, or whether this was the most ‘Doctor Who’ level of explanation we’ve ever seen. So, one of Culber’s tears dropped onto Stamets, who was ‘connected’ to the mycelial network at the time, which meant that his ‘energy’ was transferred there, and he took on some kind of mycelial form, and then May used that form to rig a mycelial transporter to deliver a flesh and blood Culber back to the regular universe. I mean .... where to start.

    Board games!

https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos/review-game-of-thrones-mother-of-dragons/ They finally got round to reviewing A Game of Thrones, and mostly nailed it for my money. The vassal system completely fixes the player count issue, that’s the only omission worth mentioning I think. But as far as describing the great lumbering time-drainer that is this game it’s a great watch.

    Aladdin Trailer Out

Holy shit I did not know Will Smith was the genie, that looked like someone had CGI’d the old cartoon one and photoshopped Smiths face on. In a bad way.
  10. Still a bit all over the place this show isn’t it? I kinda like it, but there’s something so desperate about it ... “hey, you want long haired Klingons? Speaking English? You got it! And more Star Trek type plots, sure ... here’s a ‘trapped in a sphere trying to kill us’, here’s a ‘prime directive’ episode ... but you still want pace! And action, and flashing stuff! Have it all!” It has to spend so much time being all these things that it doesn’t really arrive at it’s own tone it seems. Somebody pointed out the music earlier in the thread, I’ve never once noticed it in another show but yea, it really grates after a while having wall to wall music. I just kinda want someone to take a deep breath and sit down and talk quietly for a while.

Is anyone else getting tired of the ‘music builds toward the title reveal - drops out for a comedy line - last few stabs of the music’ thing that all trailers do nowadays? Not sure why I really hate that. Like some PR guy is saying ‘but hey look: it has comedy too!’

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

I know we’ve discussed it plenty ... but I still don’t understand why they’d wanna reboot this thing. It’s fucking great, it’s making a fuckton of money, and they’ve got the art of introducing new heroes down to a T. In fact, as came up in the DC thread, it seems like new heroes fare better than established ones. Where is the incentive to reboot? So they can have another Cap or Iron Man? Who the fuck wants either of those jobs? Plus, 10 years ago, I thought Cap was a douchy patriotic comic I’d never read, and Iron Man was a Black Sabbath song. They built this thing on their shoulders, and they could absolutely build future phases around other people. I say give it the Doctor Who treatment; keep going forever.

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

I assumed Marvel’s plan was for them to boost each other, not harm each other. The ending of IW meant anyone on the fence about Captain Marvel realised it might be important, so are more likely to see it. Plus, there’s a pretty strong chance the ending of Captain Marvel (one of them, anyway) will allude to Endgame in some way, I assume giving all the audience a good reason to see Endgame (if they didn’t have one already ... seriously who are these people?).

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

Psyched ... but then I’m psyched about everything Marvel puts out. They can count on my money for at least 5 films even if they start churning out shit. My only observation is how crazy powered she is, it’s gonna be tricky balancing that if she’s gonna be appearing alongside others in the future. It’s hard to see Avengers: Endgame just being a time travel do-over but with Captain Marvel, they very nearly beat Thanos first time. It’d be a whitewash if she’s involved.

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

I think we watched different Iron Man movies.... he’s a witty genius, then there was a bit in Iron Man 2 where he drank too much, then he straightened himself out, then he had some PTSD in 3. 80% of the time he’s just been a witty genius though.

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

They had to cut his scenes, test audiences just didn’t believe he could perform all those miracles at such a young age.

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

Feels weird that no one’s mentioned this, but Shuri grew up in Wakanda, a fictional nation that we get introduced right around the same time we meet Shuri. We don’t know a thing about Wakandan education, or what the benchmark is for a genius. You’re telling me that Shuri being, what, less than 20 years younger than Stark in IM1? ... isn’t massively offset by the fact that she’s from a super-advanced civilisation? What might Stark have achieved if he were born in Wakanda?

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

I wish it was that silly ... the Prime Minister still has to go to the Queen for “permission” to form a government. The Queen happens to be a fairly amiable lady who understands that it’s just tradition and grants it, but you’re born into the job, she just as easily could be some prick who fancies throwing a spanner in the works. Tradition holds it all together, not the actual rules, just as it’s depicted in Black Panther. At least the fight makes sure it’s not some weakling who can’t do half of the job.

    MCUniverse- Captain Marvel Rises!

BP had a villain who had a point, and our protagonist concedes the point and adjusts accordingly at the end. That’s fairly rare. I haven’t seen it since the cinema and I tend to be awful at judging Marvel movies in the first watch, so I should really rewatch. But as to the suggestion that there’s too much action from the last thread, ultimately these are superhero and people expect fights and explosions. Saving those kind of things for the team up movies will just mean no one will bother to see the team ups. I do hope Marvel take more risks as things proceed though, maybe have something akin to Logan (not necessarily the R rating, but the lower key, personal story and not a young sexy person in sight). I think Civil War has a great rhythm to it, a good action sequence in the middle and then a more personal ending.

Black Mirror - Spoilers after the first post

It’s hard to say what you thought of it without saying exactly which episode you watched. I just read about an ending that sounds really good... I did get the five star review on I think the second loop? Can’t really remember how. Also it’s seriously impressive how they’ve edited together a ‘catch-up’ so you quickly race to the same branching option. How many of those must they have done? I counted at least five decisions that appeared in mine, that’s insane. That ending above sounds good, but what about... I mean if that was my first loop and then I exited to credits, we’d be talking about vastly different episodes.

Black Mirror - Spoilers after the first post

So can I watch this on a Smart TV? Or does it have to be a device?
  22. Wandering around casually mentioning Section 31 in turbolifts doesn’t really gel with what we saw of them in DS9 either...
  23. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/star-trek-discovery-season-2-trailer-1168890 Hmm ... I’m not getting the most amounts of ‘Spock’ vibes from this guy.

    Marvel Netflix

Maybe not, but there’s a world of difference between what they consider canon and what they would ‘announce’ as non-canon. It makes way more sense to just fudge things and leave them to fizzle out on Netflix, and keep their record of not declaring things non-canon. Coulter is good as Cage, and that by itself is a good enough reason not to reboot him on the Disney service. Again, none of these properties are that super lucrative compared to Marvel’s record of starting fresh with new people. Why confuse people with ‘oh, they’re doing Luke Cage now? Didn’t that get cancelled? Is this canon to the old show? Do I need to have watched the old show?’ Why bother? Considering they can make shows with actual MCU movie stars?
  25. DaveSumm

    Marvel Netflix

I think they’d need a very good reason to pronounce anything non-canon, that damages the concept of canon way more than it helps. It won’t ever happen. Probably, Punisher and JJ will come out, maybe a Defenders wrapping things up. That’s it, ends with a whimper not a bang. To repeat myself from the Avengers thread, we’ve reached the point where Marvel have the formula down for introducing lesser known heroes, and where cramming them all in a film is very difficult. I just can’t picture Disney thinking “we must get Daredevil back at all costs!” Why? What money is there to be made that they couldn’t make with something else?
