MCUniverse - Nick hath no Fury like an MRA troll

I assumed it’d be a prequel. I actually quite like the idea of accidentally reversing the snapped people with unsnapped, and it’s nice to dwell on a theory that isn’t explicitly ruled out by future films (Fury, Peter, Black Panther, Doctor Strange we know appear later, I think that’s it?) ... but yea, highly unlikely it’d be that bleak after the IW ending, and doubtful they’d do GotG without Rocket. Given the differing lengths of Black Widow’s hair, I’m wondering if they don’t regroup, Captain Marvel arrives, and then they have a stab at defeating Thanos again ... only to discover there’s nothing they can do, the glove can’t unsnap them. Captain Marvel leaves (she isn’t in the group walk at the end), and then many months go by where they’re all miserable as hell. Time for Clint to turn Ronin, time for Widow’s hair to grow, Cap to grow a beard, for Stark and Nebula to get back. Then Plan B: the time travel plan (or something). Only thing that doesn’t quite line up is Scott turning up while Widow’s hair is still short, I think we all assumed he was super excited about his time travel plan, but he doesn’t have to be. Makes sense that he’d head to Avengers HQ regardless. I quite like the idea of the first act of the movie being a build up to Thanos Mk2, only for Thanos to be sat there not even putting up a fight. “Kill me if you want, but there’s nothing you can do. The glove is destroyed.”

It would have been chaos when pilots, drivers etc disappeared, half the emergency services - there probably would be a bunch of genuinely missing people, and a shred of hope might make someone put up a poster. Especially if nobody saw them turn to dust.

Hmm ... I can’t quite make my mind up which I prefer. If the gauntlet can ‘unsnap’, it really cheapens IW for me. Who provides the information that it can unsnap? Why sit around moping about it only to just basically rehash another battle with Thanos? On the other hand, time travel comes with its own problems. There needs to be a strict set of very confining rules as to what they can do. If they can go back as far as they like, then just kill Thanos when he’s younger. That’s too easy though. I’m really hoping Endgame provides a 3rd route that nobody’s thought of.

    Make Mine Captain Marvel! (SPOILERS)

Man of Steel very nearly didn’t say ‘Superman’ anywhere, not even in the title. It was only when that soldier said ‘Superman, sir. That’s what they’re calling him.’ I doubt you’d have noticed if that scene wasn’t in it.

    Make Mine Captain Marvel! (SPOILERS)

Does it need to be said at any point? Nobody really calls Cap “Captain America” anymore do they. It’s an out-of-universe problem, not an in-universe one so I’m not fussed if nobody ever mentions it.

    UK Politics: Time Marches On

I still don’t fully understand which vote was which, but when I read that ‘rule out no deal’ won by 4 votes ... 4? That’s how narrowly we avoided voluntarily becoming the only country in the world with zero trade deals? WTAF? Also I’m worried that in a weird way ruling it out makes a second referendum impossible, as you say, what would the vote be on? Remain, or some deal that literally doesn’t exist? What sort of question is that?

Here’s us blathering about lists, we’re missing the good stuff! https://twitter.com/Russo_Brothers/status/1106162875884683265?s=20

So my understanding is we’re headed toward a cliff edge at 100mph, and we’ve ruled out either slowing down, stopping, or falling off the cliff? It looks to me like May’s deal will be defeated again, so will it come down to a short extension, with May then having the choice between No Deal or referendum? And no deal was of course ruled out? Was her talk last night of ‘facing the consequences’ and not getting Brexit at all softening up for a referendum? Is that her choice alone or does that get put before parliament? Will it not then become part of a long list of things we’ve ‘ruled out’?

Literally any MCU film > literally any DC film. Not just being a Marvel fanboy, really serious. Wonder Woman comes closest, but even that was overrated as hell.

    Make Mine Captain Marvel! (SPOILERS)

I think it being written on her plane in the photo that Fury has at the end (Captain Carol “Avenger” Danvers) was the first reference to her being a Captain. But yea, at the moment, there’s no reason it should be her name.

The usual suspects cluster around the top of most lists, and the same with the bottom ... but I think Ant-Man might be the most varied that I’ve seen. I personally love it, at the time it was the funniest MCU movie, Paul Rudd is great, miniaturisation hadn’t been done properly in forever, it was great heist movie ... I don’t get the hate. And the Wasp? Different story, that had some problems. I still enjoyed it, but it tried to do one too many things and relied too much on quantum technobabble.

I’m completely lost. Which vote one by 4, and which by 43?

I think when you try and recall a movie you haven’t seen in a while, you might remember a snapshot of one bit that overrides your memory of the rest. With Iron Man 3 I remember the PTSD and the crashing in the middle of nowhere, I really liked all that part. But the ending was a let down, and moreover, it just didn’t feel that interesting after you’ve seen Tony as one of the Avengers. I suspect IM3, had it been released in the 90’s, would’ve been raved about. They seem to have cottoned onto this now; sequels need a different spin, especially if we’ve seen them in a team up movie. Winter Soldier has a whole different time period and genre on its side, and is a country mile ahead of IM3 and Thor 2 for most people. Then if you do a third movie, you need some other people involved; Ragnarok had Hulk and a fresh director, Civil War has basically everyone. This is my main worry for the future of the MCU; I care less and less about straight sequels. Looking at the slate for Phase 4 after the cataclysmic events of IW and Endgame, its like, Doctor Strange 2? Spider-Man 2? Guardians 3? Black Panther 2? Meh. Not terrifically excited by any of those. I’m more eager to see Eternals, Shang-Chi, whatever other new ones are coming.
  14. Interestingly in the case of Yesterday’s Enterprise, the current universe we know and love collapsed and was replaced by the new one, up until they fixed it and it reappeared. By those rules, that means the JJverse collapsed the Prime universe. I’m not exactly sure which one came first, JJ split (Kirk’s birth) or proposed DIS split (Burnham saved). Is Spock a similar age in both? Be pretty bizarre if the JJ verse existed for a few months and then the Red Angel dislodged it again to this Discovery timeline. Yea the pilot drove home this idea that Burnham was responsible. Although I recall talk at the time that the Klingon War was alluded to previously in Star Trek, I think Picard mentioned it once? Or he said first contact ‘went very badly’ or something. Anyway ... I’m personally hoping the Picard series is just a straight up TNG sequel, no awkward tie in attempts.

Actually putting Civil War top was one of the few positions I’m sure of. It has the best fight scenes, the best third act, it’s critical to the MCU but also a good movie in its own right, it has pretty much everyone in it and manages to provide an arc for a lot of them, and it has a genuinely debatable dilemma at its core. It’s the only one I don’t really have any caveats about.

I just had the time and fancied attempting it, to be quite honest everything from 6 to 15 is as good as random, and I’m not actually sure Infinity War deserves to be so high as it doesn’t really function as a film in its own right. And I had no idea where to put Iron Man for the reasons you describe. Essentially, if you were banned from watching all but one ever again, which one do you pick? What about 2? That’s how I tried to answer it.

    Make Mine Captain Marvel! (SPOILERS)

It could be interesting if she arranged for Xandar to give the Skrulls asylum, hence the war with them. Then somehow they reassure the Kree that they don’t pose a threat and it ends the war (or maybe they just outgun the Kree so they give up). Then Thanos destroying the Nova Corps puts the Skrulls back in play for Phase 4.
  18. Urgh, if they tie it in to Discovery regardless of which timeline it’s in ... then, is TNG in the same one? Which means, DS9 and Trials and Tribbleations is too ... and that breaks my brain.

Not sure if I’ve ever put one of these together so I thought, why not now: Captain America: Civil War Avengers: Infinity War Captain America: The Winter Soldier Spider-Man: Homecoming The Avengers Ant-Man Thor: Ragnarok Guardians of the Galaxy Captain Marvel Black Panther Avengers: Age of Ultron Captain America: The First Avenger Iron Man Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 Doctor Strange Thor Iron Man 3 Ant-Man and the Wasp Iron Man 2 Thor: The Dark World The Incredible Hulk It’s so tough though, separating out how good the film is on its own merits vs how much I like the character or how important it is for the larger MCU. It feels a little harsh to IM2 and 3, considering they’ve got RDJ as Tony Stark which is clearly awesome.

    Make Mine Captain Marvel! (SPOILERS)

I guess the question is, to what degree is beating Thanos an issue? Is the glove operational, can he just do it again if they reverse it? It could be the film revolves largely around undoing it, and then going to visit Thanos on his farm afterward is just a fairly straightforward bit of housekeeping. We already had the ‘trying to defeat Thanos’ movie, it’d be a shame to rehash that. On the other hand, if the glove does work, or Thanos can still wield the stones in some fashion? Then it’s all back in play. I could totally see the space stone nullifying Captain Marvel’s powers, or even if she came in full strength, he could make her perceive a different reality, or just rewind time.
  21. I thought it turned out to be Culber? Mae shouted at everyone cos she thought it was Discovery but then Culber was ‘following’ them in the network or something. Although either way, if a bunch of mycelial life forms were killed, somebody should be feeling bad. And that doesn’t seem to be why Culber’s mad (maybe it should be). If the Red Angel turns out to have put this all in a new timeline, I’d really rather they just came out and say it. This was the whole principle of the JJverse: “Things don’t look the same but don’t worry, it’s a new timeline” ... as opposed to what Discovery would be doing, pissing fans off for two seasons before pulling the same trick.

You think maybe the MCU could start having movies named something other than the hero or The Avengers? It seems quite constraining now. Like everything has to either be about one person or ‘the team up’. It’d be good if they could just have movies about any subset of people. Maybe instead of Thor 4, a general space movie where it was like “OK, Thor’s in it, the Guardians, Captain Marvel, a few others, and it’s called “............” Civil War was the closest we had but it was still obliged to be ultimately about Steve.
  23. This is one of those times where I simply cannot believe a room of people earning a lot of money actually all heard that and said ‘yup, I’m pretty sure it’s the tempo that’s the problem ... this double time version should fix things’. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. They made the worst theme in history even worse. I have no evidence at all, but I completely agree the theme killed it. It soured everyone from the get go, gave us a reason to look for more flaws and less likely to give it the benefit of the doubt. Classic orchestral theme = 7 seasons.

I still can’t see the argument for a reboot. Cap and Iron Man are popular because they made them popular, and they can do the same thing again with new heroes. Or they can have other characters taking on the mantle (almost certainly where they’re headed with Bucky). It just seems way easier to continue with what they’ve built than to be lumped with the task of recasting the Big Two. I’d like to see an Avengers concluding Phase 4 where something so awful happens that they outlaw superheroes, and maybe even have the guts to completely clear the slate for a year afterward. Let things breathe for a while, then ... Xavier doesn’t like how things are looking, how bad the world looks without gifted people. So he decides to finally reveal the mutants he’s been schooling all this time in the form of his new team: the X-Men. There’d still be room for the xenophobia toward mutants in this climate where it was illegal to do what they’re doing (with the added wrinkle that they can’t help being what they are to complicate the debate), but the people we know and love from the MCU are still out there and can still be interacted with. Hell, we’ve already seen that you can make a universe with just the X-Men, there’s ample material that you could basically turn the MCU into the XCU. Make them the predominant stars of the universe.
  25. I’m doubling down on my Doctor Who comparison: if this was a 90’s Trek then the time vortex thing would’ve been way more clearly defined and explained, it would’ve had a set of rules that they had to work around. Here we just had ‘it’s timey wimey’ and a hundred different rules for how it worked every minute. It’s a pacing thing, they seem set on Discovery constantly going super fast so that every conversation, ever camera move, every bit of plot is going ten to the dozen. Talos IV is tricky, Burnham pretty casually set a course for it when the Federation has the death penalty for visiting. Yep, not the Talosians, the Federation. And Pike can’t get involved as we know he doesn’t return there (having visited three years ago) until TOS.
