  1. For the cinefiles, or for anyone interested in how things got done. A 20 minute video essay on a 10 second shot used in Brian De Palma's Bonfire of the Vanities. The Most Difficult Shot in Movie History (And Why It Matters) TL:DW The story of how the shot came about is told between timestamps 2:37 - 6:42, it's a great story.
  2. The expected arm wrestle between NZ and SA. Too much pride for SA not to turn up and up their intensity and stick to what has worked for their set up, putting pressure on NZ forcing them to make errors. Edit: this is actually the game I hoped between these two, at least from South Africa. Even with The Rugby Championship now secured by NZ, fans back home, unfortunately, will ravage this performance from their team. Cool thing is, they get to do this again next week. Australia vs Argentina coming right up at the same stadium.
  3. Loving the Reservation Dog series so far. I've watched a bit of patrickisanavajo, before RevDogs came out, when I was getting tired of the same perspective in the old classic Westerns (though who ever gets tired of a good Western?), and wanted to know what indigenous Americans enjoyed in a Western - if they ever do. Turns out most are positive about Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, Thunderheart, and the like. Even though the leads are white, as long as the representation of indigenous peoples is balanced and fair and uses indigenous actors, then the movie can be enjoyed for what it is - a good watch. There's an unusual fondness for Willow I've found. I've not heard anything about the older Westerns from the Ford/John Wayne era though. Anyway, that was a good clip. Dallas Goldtooth, who plays Spirit in Reservation Dogs, is part of a sketch comedy group the 1491s, "a gaggle of Indians chock full of cynicism and splashed with a good dose of indigenous satire. They coined the term All My Relations, and are still waiting on the royalties. They were at Custer's Last Stand. They mooned Chris Columbus when he landed. They invented bubble gum. the 1491s teach young women to be strong. And teach young men how to seduce these strong women." Here's a couple of entries from their youtube channel that are worth a laugh.
  4. Another great game between these two teams. Last week's game was snatched away by the last minute penalty by Quade Cooper, this week was a much deserved victory. I can appreciate South Africa taking opportunities to move the ball when offered, but (if I were a SA supporter) I would've preferred to win ugly than to succumb to recent media about playing boring rugby - win first, play pretty if warranted. On Australia's part, this team is showing its potential. Take out the results against NZ and Rennie's test record against other nations is looking very good. The presence of Kerevi in the centres is having a great effect. Paisami and Ikitau are benefiting from this. I haven't given up hope on the young Lolesio, lets hope he can recover under Coooper's resurgence. Add in Tupou, a much better starter than sub IMO, Lachie Swinton, Andrew Kellaway, this team might be a dark horse for 2023.
  5. Another double header in The Rugby Championship, this time the teams have moved up the highway to Brisbane with Aus vs SA up first. Entertaining first half so far with the Australian back line showing their willingness to spread the ball. SA keeping in touch with Handre Pollard's boot. I honestly can't tell who will have the momentum in the second half, just hope its not decided by the referee and TMO.
  6. Having Samu Kerevi to support Cooper has certainly paid dividends for Dave Rennie. Kerevi was the Wallabies most dangerous back before he left for Japan a few years back. Cooper won't be the future of the Wallaby backline but as long as he's healthy and maintains form his presence may prove invaluable until Lolesio gets some mojo back. With the outstanding Hooper leading from the front, and Koroibete on the wings there's more than enough talent to build a competitive team for next World Cup. Cooper has certainly matured with his play, and more importantly with the person he presents himself as these days. Great after match interview here offers some insight in that journey. I'm reminded of Jason Robinson and the influence Va'aiga Tuigamala had on him when they were both at Wigan in the mid 90s. Next week's double header is at Suncopr Stadium in Brisbane. Unfortunately the latter game between Arg/NZ clashes with the NRL 2nd week finals match between Penrith vs Parramatta.
  7. Double header in Queensland today. Argentina vs New Zealand first up. Watching it live I thought the Argentinian defense was solid & committed - yet the score board kept sprouting up in NZ's favour, in the end too clinical when presented with scoring opportunities. The game between by South Africa vs Australia was riveting from start to finish. SA may rue their poor performance but I had a feeling Australia were going to be within striking distance near the end and then took the opportunity to seal the win when it arose. I'm so happy for Quade Cooper, cool, calm collected throughout - what a return to the test match arena!
  8. Bledisloe's locked up for another year, so the scheduled third match between AUS & NZ in Perth would just be a Rugby Championship game. The ABs may be given dispensation to get out of NZ, but I doubt WA will let them in. The outbreak in Auckland now traces back to the 6th Aug, before the first match with 47,000 in attendance.
  9. Gawd dammit, the shops across the road from my home here in Sydney include no less than six barbers or hair-salons, and none have been open for the last seven weeks due to Covid restrictions. Today I bit the bullet and cut my own hair, or at least half it before my trimmer blunted and I had to put two masks on and go to the supermarket across the road and buy a new beard & hair trimmer to finish the job. My self haircut looks better than some of the mops I saw in that All Blacks/Wallabies game. I do like how Australia have gone back to the Gold jersey, that's ominous.
  10. Growing up in a Quaker household, Jocelyn Bell Burnell was raised to believe that she had as much right to an education as anyone else. But as a girl in the 1940s in Northern Ireland, her enthusiasm for the sciences was met with hostility from teachers and male students.
  11. Deserved MotM award for Maro Itoje. SA will have to come out blazing in the 2nd test. They would've rued the small errors that cost them. Haven't looked up where the next game is being played at, but hopefully it won't be at the same ground (which is a multi-purpose ground, hence the poor field traction for rugby).
  12. Good game between Australia and France. A surprisingly good series. The Wallabies steeled themselves from that Koroibete send off and that was a great 14 man effort to pull off the win. I'm liking Lolesio at 1st five more and more and they have the makings of a competitive halves-centre set of players. The lineups from both teams includes a number of players who came up through the U20s of 2018 & 2019, the likes of Lolesio and Woki. It's scary how France will reap the benefits of that emerging talent right at the next World Cup in 2 years! I watched the B&I Lions vs SA A game from the week before and SA needed that to get a number of their players game time - but they did look good. In light of all the troubles SA, outside of rugby, is dealing with, I hope this is a cracker series to give the local supporters some cheer.
  13. Yeah good game between Aus & France. Didn't know that it was France's first win on Australian soil for 31years! Beware the French, especially when the game is scheduled on or near Bastille Day, On Lolesio, he's a centre primarily, but as he's only 21yrs old I wouldn't be surprised if Rennie persists with him at 10 for more games to see if his can develop a fine mettle for the position at this level.
  14. Well, I see the USA got a reality check from Ireland in speed of play. I forget how many overseas players are playing in the USMLR so it could still be a few seasons before their talent pool fills out. They just need the right coaches to make use of that pool. Time to start checking out how The B&I Lions and South Africa are doing with their warm up games.
  15. I only watched the extended highlights of that Eng vs USA 4th of July game, but I can already see the impact the USMLR (of which I've been watching quite a bit of highlights from this season) is beginning to have. Great potential there if the USA and Canada get regular meaningful test-level matches against 1st tier nations (even if its the 2nd string teams from those nations). And of this particular occasion - will it become a regular fixture? I I mean, what better way for the US to celebrate their independence than with an opportunity to match up (and maybe one day in a possible future defeat) the primary nation they they gained independence from .
  16. Short film (10mins) about Manhood, Bullying and Violence. Its quite nuanced, which suggests this filmmaker, Miles Warren, is a talent to watch out for. Fans of The Wire will recognise J.D. Williams (Brodie).
  17. The type of tree is indeed important. I know a guy who hits the first tee shot away from the fairway and then up into a tree. That tree then proceeds to carefully place his ball on the edge of said fairway. This goes on for most of every hole.
  18. This came out first in 2016 and has been doing the rounds again. To my embarrassment I'm guilty of having done the first one at least once. But thankfully no to the rest
  19. A new episode is now up on the Fall of Civilizations Podcast. Audio only. 13. The Assyrians - Empire of Iron Edit to add: Another excellent episode. The first 8minutes weaves another fascinating tale from antiquity as introduction to the titular subject. Its done so well i almost wish Cooper kept on that tale for more. Still, the Assyrians did not disappoint.
  20. Indeed, that's impressive. Yes that early vibe is different. Dynamo Dream feels like a day in the life of documentary short, though the POV story certainly becomes intriguing, the attention to detail makes the world feel immersive and complete in its detail. Some details are less polished than others (too often background scenes in major cinema features cut away from their expensive CGI shots before our eyes can appreciate them) but we're treated to them warts and all and I appreciate Hubert allowing shots to linger.
  21. This was amazing! After 20 minutes I didn't want it to end.
  22. The short film based on the Sci-fi short, Blindsight, was recently completed. From a collaboration of artists from around the globe between 2016 and 2020. The visuals are certainly impressive. Blindsight, by Peter Watts can be read online here. ---------- And another short film inspired by TENET. We filmed this in one night for a short film contest that we super did not win but I wanted to capture both the spirit and style of Christopher Nolan's TENET, combining it with a film concept I've been working on for years -- all created on the budget of a pair of shoes. Hope ya'll dig it. - Stephen Ford
  23. How so? I heard he got an invite to the US Open coming up in June, did he get one to participate in this PGA Championship?
  24. Whenever CineFix releases a top 10 list, its worth checking out. This one's on animated films, by genre. The horror pick, The Wolf house (2018) looks absolutely terrifying, yet I'm somewhat compelled to check it out. And the mind bending pick, It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012) looks an absolute treat and must watch.
  25. Thanks for that. It does appear to be the same law(s) targeted by the petition. Glad to see they're coming to reason. I plan to watch this this Easter weekend. As good a time as any for an emotional wringer.
