  1. I agree with that, the costumes of the humans officers looked perfectly fine, it's when it goes beyond that formalwear into what the alies were wearing or some of the regular humans on the show.
  2. I actually watched some episodes of it in the 90's as I came back from football practice. I had never seen something like this before and immediately thought it looked great. If you look at the designs, and the space battles in season 2 3 and 4, it still holds up today. The thing that I always thought looked dated, even then, was the costuming. I never liked that, not in Star Trek, and not in B5 either, that is what makes it feel outdated to me. The visual aspects like B5 itself, the designs of the ships, the whole feel of it, that still looks very good.
  3. A B5 reboot would be wonderful and has long been hoped for. Decent budget, new CGI, I'd just be interested in a completely new look. Lost Tales was disappointing because it was such a brief effort, but nice to be back in that world for a bit.
  4. The problem IMO is that season 1 is just far less interesting than what comes after, especially season 2, 3 and 4. I did not rate season 1 at all, even though B5 is one of my three favorite SF shows.
  5. Are the two fairly different from another, in terms of the story it tells?
  6. Lions of Al-Rassan first because that one is easy to get into. Tigana is a classic but I found it harder to get into at the start. Sarantine Mosaic and Under Heaven come highly recommended by many people. Last Light of the Sun seems very interesting to me. I personally loved his only high fantasy work, the Fionavar Tapestry, it remains my favorite alongside " Lions". I still have a lot of Kay books still to read though.
  7. What did you like about River of Stars? Agreed btw on the World Fantasy Award, he should be on that every time he releases a book because he writes the sort of stuff they generally like to reward anyway, and he's actually both popular and very good. And that popularity can be a strike against him with these sort of awards, I feel.
  8. Found it very hard to get into to start with, and just didn't connect with the characters in it the way I usually can with Kay's excellent novels. River of Stars seemed quite dull in comparison.
  9. I am liking this one more than the previous one with the Asian setting, River of Stars, which ranks as the worst Kay novel for me.
  10. Second excerpt: http://www.fantasybookcafe.com/2016/03/excerpt-children-of-earth-and-sky-by-guy-gavriel-kay/
  11. Seems like the story is all about evolving young characters from the looks of it. Any characters of Rodrigo or Ammar's stature in the book, like we saw in Lions? Also, is a significant amount of time spent in the palaces of The Grand Khalif or other ruling entities? I enjoyed that stuff in Sarantium duology.

    Board Issues 4

I don't know why the change to this new forum was made. That said it does not feel like a step forward. The skin doesn't look as good as the old one, there is a lot of white which gives it a different feel and makes it a bit less readable somehow. I also think the margin to the left of the forum is too wide, and definitely wider than we had before this update. This should ideally be quite a bit smaller. I also think that if the threads remain lost that would be unfortunate. Hopefully you will still be able to integrate them into this new board. It's a bit weird to lose all the content from the last two months since some discussions now are built on what was revealed or said then. On the positive side, the avatars look really nice and the new skin does feel fresh. Would love it if the "like" function came back, as that was a big success among posters.
  13. It's always the most remarkable thing when people discuss their favourite Kay novels, we've had quite a few of such discussions over the last 15 years here with different participants. Everybody has a different favourite. There's no consensus whatsoever. Really speaks to the consistent great writing that Kay produces.   Though having said that, one can acknowledge that Ysabel, Last Light of the Sun and River of Stars rarely, if ever, come up as the no.1. The praise for Song for Arbonne has faded as well, and while I personally loved the Fionavar Tapestry and still see that as one of the best epic fantasy trilogies ever, it's not a series that ranks the highest amongst fans in general.   Hopefully Children of Earth and Sky will rank among the very best.
  14. So what time period and place might be the real world equivalent? Fall of Constantinople?   Could that be the " great fortress" on the borders of the two worlds?
  15. I found a synopsis on Amazon. I have to say I'm not excited, but part of that is that its impossible to pinpoint from this where this takes place, and in what sort of time period.
  16. Tough job, the man's had so many interviews already. Myself I'm interested in any info on the new book.
  17. Something revolving around the Maori's would be awesome.
  18. Very interesting. Above all I want a new setting. No info whatsoever on what it is about I assume?
  19. 1. Lions of Al-Rassan 2. Fionavar Tapestry 3. Sarantine Mosaic. All the other ones still to read, but all 3 of these were excellent.
  20. Cool, looking forward to your review. Are there any supernatural aspects in it as far as you've read? I was also wondering if the people beyond the Great Wall, the steppe people, get a lot of attention in this one?
  21. River of Stars has been picking up some good advance reviews. I've got to say I've regained my excitement for this new release, we don't get a Guy Kay novel often. It's listed at 660 pages in hardcover ( with a stunning cover btw), which makes this his biggest book sofar.
  22. Edited for incorrectness.
  23. For those who do have a facebook account, Kay has released the first two chapters of River of Stars on Facebook.
  24. Next Guy Gavriel Kay book is called River of Stars and comes out in April: http://www.amazon.co...39326491&sr=1-2
  25. Excellent. I was just thinking about the next Guy Kay book and how he usually releases a book every 3 years, so one is due next year. And then this great piece of news.
