  1. Oeh, The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman, his long awaited Arthurian novel, is finally done and coming out in July:

    Quote
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Magicians trilogy returns with a triumphant reimagining of the King Arthur legend for the new millennium

A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a spot on the Round Table, only to find that he’s too late. The king died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlann, leaving no heir, and only a handful of the knights of the Round Table survive.

They aren’t the heroes of legend, like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, from the edges of the stories, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill. Together this ragtag fellowship will set out to rebuild Camelot in a world that has lost its balance.

But Arthur’s death has revealed Britain’s fault lines. God has abandoned it, and the fairies and monsters and old gods are returning, led by Arthur’s half-sister Morgan le Fay. Kingdoms are turning on each other, warlords lay siege to Camelot and rival factions are forming around the disgraced Lancelot and the fallen Queen Guinevere. It is up to Collum and his companions to reclaim Excalibur, solve the mysteries of this ruined world and make it whole again. But before they can restore Camelot they’ll have to learn the truth of why the lonely, brilliant King Arthur fell, and lay to rest the ghosts of his troubled family and of Britain’s dark past.

The first major Arthurian epic of the new millennium,
The Bright Sword is steeped in tradition, full of duels and quests, battles and tournaments, magic swords and Fisher Kings. It also sheds a fresh light on Arthur’s Britain, a diverse, complex nation struggling to come to terms with its bloody history. The Bright Sword is a story about imperfect men and women, full of strength and pain, who are looking for a way to reforge a broken land in spite of being broken themselves.

    No Sandman season 2....

Unlikely for this year then? Or just not far enough into shooting to have a trailer.

Nadal didn’t just only lose to Federer and Joker. There was plenty of other players he lost to. Reason I put Nadal is that he’s definitely a specialist. 14 of his slam wins were the French. Yes he won the others a few times but I think Serena and Joker have a much more balanced resume than him. Hence I think they are better players.

Aside from the fact that Serena Williams was not a better player than Rafael Nadal, you also cant make that comparison. She played in a different sport, with very different competition. You can compare her to other female players, but you can not say she was better than Nadal. She never played Nadal, and if she had, Nadal would not have given her 1 game.

Compare her to those she played, or compare her historically. But not cross sports. And against Nadal, who achieved so much and has been such a legend. I was much more impressed with Nadal the last 20 years fighting in a very crowded field than I was by Williams who played an ever revolving cast of Russian/Belarusian players who would disappear a year later. And still I think she is a legend in her own right and worthy of the acclaim she gets.

  4. That could be a great series too, yes.

Not much of what is supposedly coming along interests my Watch sensibilities, but this does -- it's quite an astonishing/weird event and time in US history, and not least since it was Arthur who took Garfield's position after his death from assassination attempt (1881).

Then, in 1899, McKinley was assassinated, and Theodore Roosevelt stepped in.

Yes, our history is one of peaceful transfer of power and 'merely' lone deranged killers . . . .

TR didn't run, as he could have, and was wanted to do, for a second term, since Roosevelt thought he'd really had a first term already since McKinley died, so had already served two terms.  He regretted his decision after not too short a time!  Imagine what history of the period might have been like if not Taft, then, we had Roosevelt . . . .

    Thats also an interesting series.

We're most likely not going to have another Big Three plus Serena.

Well we can actually. I agree with Baxus that there is really zero reason to bring a female player into it though, feels like you do that because you're American, she's American, but its incredibly hamfisted to lump her into a discussion with the Big 3. Let her be by far the best in the women's field, as a Big 1, which she was in her prime. Also, why would we need "a Big 3 and Serena" :D That feels incredibly artificial , to just add that in there, and you know it. Whats next, we need a Big 3 and Nascar? We need a big 3 and Peyton Manning?

And can we have another big 3? I doubt with the charm that got the first time, but I can hope. Getting another Federer would be a dream. But I do think Sinner, Alcaraz, and an as yet upcoming youngser could make a new Big 3, or Big 4.

He does seem to just very quietly go about his business, exactly the sort of player i appreciate (in all sports).

The top 4 in the West are pretty inseparable now. i have no idea who comes out of there (i'd guess that Denver or LA due to having players with championship/big game experience).

Its going to be very tight between those 4 teams yes, which is exciting.

And I still dont count a great run from the Suns and Lakers, so that is 6 potential finalists. But those top 4 look rock solid.

For me, Denver still slight favorite.

Was it his wrist, though? Per the man himself :

Which is a whole lot of nothing in terms of why exactly he wasnt up to par.

A bit early to start thinking Djokovic is going downhill based on 1 Grand Slam and after the year he had last year.

I think the reality is that he will continue to be excellent but that Sinner and Alcaraz , and occasionally also Medvedev will be able to compete with him all the way in most or all tournaments.

Easily my strongest memory of choosing a book by its cover was Dinotopia, when I was 11. I was reading much more complex books by then, but I was still absolutely obsessed with dinos (this was before I took Science in Junior High and realized how much I loathed molecular bio stuff. I saw the book at a beloved huge bookstore in St Louis called Library Limited - at the time my favorite place in the world. Marched right up to Mom and we didn't even bother making it a Christmas present, etc. We grew up rather tight on money so I recall it was $30, a significant sum compared to my usual request for a single mass market paperback (I think I was reading Raymond Feist and Shannara back then).

I can still sit down with that kid's book and have a great time looking over the gorgeous sketches. I was an avid drawer back then and boldly attempted some renditions of the artwork, albeit to mixed results. Heck I should try that as a grown man who's hardly touched his supplies in twenty years.

I even bought one of the Dinotopia sequels Gurney did, or maybe even 2. The artwork is just astonishing, he is just a master of his craft.

They could have just not included that scene, especially since it doesn't make any sense. Or they could have had Galadriel finding Finrod's grave.

Weirdly, some of this stuff doesnt sound so unlikely. Its just impossible to know if some dude made all of this up or its real intel.

I remember we got massive spoilers on TORN for season 1 which seemed quite absurd and of which a large part was eventually correct.

Pre-Production for Rings of Power's third season reportedly begins:

The interesting about the Bombadil suggestion is that I saw The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is being reprinted in August to coincide with Season 2 of the Rings of Power, as per the book publisher.

So that suggests that while nothing has been mentioned yet, behind the scenes they seem to be looking at an August-September premiere.

And Bombadil, in whatever capacity, might well be in season 2, which is exciting, as long as they dont make it ridiculous.

And he didn't make it after all. I didn't see it coming before the match, that's for sure. Alcaraz wasn't entirely himself today, especially in the first two sets, but it was mostly Zverev playing fantastic tennis start to finnish, with the slight exception of late third set, when he got broken and then lost the tie-break.

I didnt expect a Zverev win either, though I did think he has the game to make it hard on Alcaraz as I seem to vaguely recall from their previous matches. Of course Zverev has been a legit top 5 player again since his return from injury so this does not come completely out of the blue when laid next to the pattern of erratic Alcaraz performances since Wimbledon. For whatever reason, Alcaraz has been a lot more vulnerable.

Now, this means Zverev has to beat Medvedev and Sinner beat Djokvic.

Can Zverev do that? Well historically he has a lot of problems with Medvedev and a very bad 1:1 record, but as I recall he did beat him last year in an important match. I think this is a 50:50 match.

Sinner vs Djokovic, well Sinner has been superb so far, and pre-Aussie Open has been the man to make life incredibly hard for Djokovic. I dont know how big his chances are though, very hard to estimate. The fact that Djokovic has had a few wobbly games and Sinner hasnt, means nothing, that is something we know from our extensive experience with Djokovic, he is oftentimes not a Federer-like "first 4 rounds in straight sets barreling through" guy.

It's official, the Bucks are hiring Rivers.  Man, that guy has got nine lives.

Bizarre and frankly totally unexplicable. I find this a much stranger move than sacking Griffin who there was a lot of rumdlings about apparently since he started.

  13. Well, I have bought the massive tome that is 1Q84 and will read that at some point.

Also bought Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun as a well regarded counterweight a third of its size, both books really intrigue me.

  14. Best I saw:

    Last of Us

    We own the City

    White Lotus S2

    Tokyo Vice

    House of the Dragon

    Rings of Power

Sandman ( though thats probably a 2022 release)

    Kenobi ( Also a 2022 release)

Succession  s4 I dont really enjoy watching it because everybody is so terrible but its a well made show.

Beef: not a superb show but I enjoyed it.

    Old Man with Jeff bridges.

Still to watch: new seasons of Outlander, Yellowstone season 5, Andor , Ahsoka.

I have to agree with Ran on this one.

I marathoned all three seasons. The first season I think I watched in two sittings. I was thoroughly enamored with it. This creeping, oppressive atmosphere of cosmic horror that seemed to permeate everything, without ever going too far into pure horror. And the excellent characters of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. Separately I don't think they would function well as characters, but together they created this electrifying dynamic. Their interplay, their complementary character arcs...really everything about them drove that season to incredible heights. And, as a fan of Thomas Ligotti's writings, I really appreciated how well his tone was captured in that season.

Season two to me was a complete failure in terms of bringing forth engaging characters. I rather liked the idea of the convoluted conspiracy (very reminiscent of Chinatown, which is a good movie). But I think it fell apart and was kind of a mess, ultimately.

And the dialogue just didn't work for me. I actually laughed at Vince Vaughn making his soliloquies.

I think season two is unequivocally bad.

Season three was better, and even ok. I would say that season is more of a victim of a decent story being overshadowed by season one.

At any rate, since then I've rewarched season one a couple of times. I don't ever plan on rewatching the other seasons.

Personally I prefer season 2 over 3, found it a lot more engaging due to the lead actors.
