  1. Hey all!  Just thought I'd do a drive-by of the old neighborhood.

Texas was brutal this summer and I've spent very little time outdoors, which makes me sad.  My back yard has turned into a jungle in desperate need of help.

Work is beyond boring, with little to do, but should pick up in a couple of months. In fact, it might go from 0-60 overnight.

Still have issues finding a good doctor. *sigh*

Alex moved down here with me in March, and he's been nothing but a bum ever since. I've had to be mean mom and tell him he has to get a job or move in with his father (not an option either of them want)

The only thing I really like about Texas is spending time with my family.  The grandkids usually come over twice a month, and seeing my daughter nearly every week. Only see the older son every couple of months because he's a long haul trucker, but I love when he's here.

  2. Just popping in to wish everyone a happy holiday season. Hugs and kisses to all!

I am enjoying spending time with the grandsons and Alex is coming for the week between Christmas and New Years, It will be the first time in several years I have all 3 of my kids together. We had a few hours (not even a whole day) NYE 2019--just weeks before all travel every where ended.  I'm pretty excited.

Here's the link to today's column:

In researching this I was rather surprised to see that Abraham was among the top 50 boys' names in England all the way from 1550 until the end of the 19th century. I also was a bit surprised to see how it has risen on the SSA lists since 1967. It seems to be one of those slow-rising "sleeper" names that people don't realize are getting more popular.

Does anyone on the board know any Abrahams under the age of 30 in the USA? Do they tend to go by Abe or by Bram these days?

I’m way behind in my reading of your articles (mostly cause I haven’t been around much) but I had to comment on this one:

Abraham is well-used by Latinos. Songwriter Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. (1939) is father of famed singer Selena (1971-95) and guardian of her legacy. Golfer Abraham Ancer (1991), a dual American and Mexican citizen, won the Emirates Australian Open last November.

I had no idea this was common.  When I used to work a job where I got to see hundreds of names a week, I thought Abraham Sanchez was incredibly odd, but a cool blending of diverse cultures.

    Wow! I’m impressed!

My Secret Santa sent me one of the Great British Baking show cookbooks, which I said would be enough, but as a bonus I also got a calendar from the show!  And someone else saw my list and also sent me a GBB cookbook, <cough rocksniffer & SWMBO cough> a different one fortunately! Now I am drooling over recipes!

Thank you Santa, you’re the greatest! <3

On Sunday, like a hobbit, I get to do Second Christmas, since I do Christmas Day with my best friends (Christmas Eve is the big Polish feast day and that’s family) because my friends’ kids are married so now they alternate between spouses’ families and this year is the not-Christmas Day year. I will bring my GBB books and we will pore over them and choose recipes to make. All of them are bakers, and good ones!

    Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!

that sounds like a great cook book!

  6. Favorite Scent (i.e. Fruity, Vanilla, Flowery, etc): I don’t like most,
Favorite Hobby (i.e. Scrap booking, Photography, things you collect, etc): I’ve taken up painting. Trying out different mediums still.
Favorite books or types (romance, true store, mystery or just one you would like): I like a wide variety. I have a Goodreads page that includes everything I read, even the crap stuff :P
    Favorite animal: cat or owl
Favorite movies or types (romance, comedy or just a DVD/VHS you would like): again, I like a variety.
Favorite Music Artist/Type or a CD you would like:
Do you collect anything? GoT figures, but I think I have them all now
Is there anything (not expensive) you want or need? Not really

    What is your favorite:

    a. Color?
    b. Type of candy?
    c. Type of munchie?
    d. Puzzle to do?

Do you collect anything for Christmas? (i.e. certain types of ornaments, nativities, snowmen...etc.) .

What type of hobbies do you have?

If you were going to theme Christmas with just one word... what would it be?

Big family Christmas with everyone down to 2nd cousins...or just immediate family in their jammies?

    Favorite Christmas movie and why?

    Religious or non-religious Christmas/Chaunaka/

If you could spend Christmas in any one of these places, which one would you choose and why:
    a. A beach on a tropical island just a few very close family or friends, be lazy and open presents and then have a non traditional dinner including Pina Coladas and BBQ shrimp, wearing swimsuits, Bermuda shorts and tank tops
    b. Tiny cabin in the woods, fire going, very rustic, warm and cozy with your close family and friends, wearing jeans and sweaters.
    c. Biltmore Estates, full regalia, all glitter and glitz, all your close family and friends, wearing black tie and velvet

    a. chaotic
    b. slow and relaxed
    c. organized, but fast paced
    d. "Christmas is HOW SOON???!!!!"
    e. all of the above.

Name something you want but will never buy for yourself, just because you cannot see yourself being that flamboyant.

What sizes do you wear (optional answer if you would prefer to not have clothing)

What colors are in your home:

What style is your home decorated in? (i.e. ethnic, country, southwestern...etc

Anything else your SS should know about you?

Do you have any wish lists?

Forget all that, let me make it simple:  I’m very picky about scented things so better to skip those. I don’t like fish, beer, wine or coffee, in fact I rarely drink any alcohol and we have all the movies and CDs we want.

Feel free to check out my Goodreads page for book ideas. (I think it has my maiden name and last name hyphenated “Miller-“

I've taken up painting...not very good at it, and still experimenting with various mediums.

But what I really want is something regional (from your area!). Doesn’t matter much what it is (taking into account my dislikes above).  Easy-peasy.

Funny you say that, the medical/surgical assistant my doctor used the other day shares your name, and she was barely 22.  I admit I was kind of surprised (would be the same reaction if she shared my name as it also falls in that group ;) )

Thanks for the updated thread, Ormond! :)

I have a follow-up question to Baita's genealogical query, which maybe other people can help me with too. Ages ago I created a family tree on Geni and the site sends me notices of possible matches between my family tree and others, often based on names and similar dates/places. Sometimes the names will be a little different: is that more likely to happen because of inconsistent records or from family use of nicknames?

One of the things I have noticed in the records is the changing spelling of names.  When I look at US Census reports that are hand written, all by the census taker, it is easy to see how this happens.  My maternal great grandfather's last name is Reade, or Reed, or Read, or Reid, depending on what year's records you look at.  Children's names change to nicknames or middle names (Frances Grace becomes Gracie 10 yrs later). Drove me nuts at first.

But this also lead to following the wrong line for a couple of generations: Cousins who lived in the same county, both named William Fields, had boys the same year, both named Alexander, but one was Alexander Pope Fields, and one had no middle name listed. I had the wrong one for quite some time.

Nah.  Ned tells Jon, "You are a Stark.  You may not have my name, but you have my blood."  I believe Ned. He does not say, "I raised you..."  He says , "You have my blood."  That settles it for me.

He says "You are my blood" not "You have my blood"

Brothers and sister are of the same blood (used in this context)

So "You are my blood" is the same as "You are my family" and yes, even as a nephew, he is his close family.

Jon is only the legitimate heir if he is Rheagar's and Elia's son. This is so obvious that there has to be some misdirection. Rheagar conceals the birth of the third son because he fears Aerys will kill him because of the three dragons prophecy.

It has nothing to do with being the heir and everything to do with fulfilling the prophesy. Rheagar was obsessed with it.

I really don't see how anyone can believe Lyanna is not the mother.  There are no other options there.

  11. 14 minutes ago, hallam said:

Nope. All you found out was that Ned wasn't the father.

From the sight of her, it looks to me more like Lyanna was stabbed than the blood is due to birth. As in the books there is a baby placed in a room with blood.

Rheagar has to be the father. The doubt is in the mother.

I am pretty sure that is deliberate.

Yep. That is why I think the Lyanna thing is the false lead. Why folk have to insist on her being the mother is beyond me.

Have you ever witnessed childbirth? it is a bloody mess.

And if it was necessary to do a C-section, it is even worse. That is what it looked like to me (and I've seen it a few time...done it a few times)

There is no doubt who the mother is

  12. 5 minutes ago, Golden Eyes said:

Because we never see him on purpose and because Lyanna was scared for her baby and scared for her life. benioff and Weiss talk to Martin all the time so they know what happens in the end. This has been a theory for a long time and now the show finally confirmed it. Rhagar is psycho like his father and just raped Lyanna.

    Total nonsense.

Even Ned, couldn't say really bad things about Rheagar.

Ser Barristan said he was honorable

The story the Reeds tell Bran about the tournament at Harrenhall, with Lyanna crying when Rheagar plays the harp, implying they fell in love---their father never would have told them that is she had been kidnapped, raped and left to die.

There is just too much book evidence that goes against your claim, from people who would know the truth.  Ned's and Reed's comments are especially proof.

  13. Maybe Sansa would get rescued, and the Rooses would keep it a secret and substitute in a fArya/Sansa to get back to the book's story line.

If they were going to do that, there would have been no reason for the Sansa engagement.

And as others have said, LF should definitely know about Ramsey and he should have warned Sansa about it.

  14. The whole Winterfell story line is stupid. There is no way Sansa should have agreed to this based on her character. I HATE everything about this change.

I am ok with the aging up Tommen and him and Marge consummating the wedding. It answers and closes out one of the story lines, One I never thought was all that important anyway.

Like the condensing of Tyrion's travel and his meeting up with Mormont

Liked the Wall, and Jon's beheading of Stanos (but not his whining about being afraid, but whatever)

Arya was ok. Was very glad she hid her sword :)

  15. This "epic" battle scene?

The White queen, Da Vinci's Demons, Rome, spartacus, Camelot, Vikings, I could go on

This show had a $60 million budget this season, more than most movies. There's no excuse.

really? Average Movie Budget of these 33 movies: $139,084,697 and being generous, 3 hours long, or more than $46million dollars an hour, compared to $6million and hour for this show

You guys are saying "book purist" like that's a bad thing. Why is pointing out the flaws in a very flawed show so angering? "Book purist haters" are definitely more annoying at this point and are defending a low quality product. Or perhaps you're all too sensitive and can't accept that this show is a poor representation of superior books?

Or, some people realize that this is NOT the books, and there is no way the books (ANY BOOK!) can become a literal translation onto a screen.

They are two very different mediums and should not be compared to each other. (I know I also almost always say "the book was better" no matter the show/movie, but that is not the same as saying "this sucks because it is not the exact same thing a the book")

I do have the advantage of watching with my unsullied husband and do try to see it through his eyes, and compare this tv show, to TV.

  16. There were a ton of book differences. I know it's tough rounding out a season roughly 60-70% into the book its adapting, but a lot of the rounding out felt contrived. I thought the "Mhysa" thing with Dany was contrived and underwhelming compared to the mid season climax in Astapor. The Ygritte/Jon scene was implausible and weighed down by the cliche'd love story. The buddy/buddy Tyrion/Sansa scene was off. The Shae/Varys scene almost gave me a heart attack. I thought for a minute they were going to walk right into the abyss with changing things. It felt like D&D were trolling book readers.

The Shea scene also nearly got me. It was stupid to add it if she didn't go. I didn't get it at all.
