    Wuhan Coronavirus

This is getting to the point that I thought it deserved its own thread. The BBC is reporting the first death outside of China: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-51345855 CNN is reporting 14,800 cases worldwide with 300 dead: https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-02-20-intl-hnk/index.html Earlier CNN reported the PRC is seeking beds from the EU as it is running out of beds to care for those who are ill: https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/01/us/coronavirus-us-massachusetts/index.html From the article: China asking for help from the EU to provide beds and medical supplies is what really caught my attention.

ST:TMP was good science fiction but weak Star Trek.

Looks like the Melinda Snodgrass character creation issue has been resolved:

US Politics: What goes up, must come down!

Ha ha. I don’t know which polling place I will be helping manage. We were trained by a gentleman who happened to be black.

US Politics: What goes up, must come down!

I’m working the polls for the election on Saturday. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

US Politics: What goes up, must come down!

I’d love to see that too. How much do you want to bet whoever takes the Oval office runs with Trump’s expansion of Executive power and takes no action to reverse his abuses.

US Politics: Money, Money, Money Makes the World Go Round

I’ve love to see Graham lose but I’ll be very surprised to see him unseated.

The fundamental difference is that Trump attacks the Press generally. What you pointed out was Sanders getting upset at a particular press organization. They are not the same things at all.

Yes. From Melinda Snodgrass’s facebook page: She mentions down her thread that she will let the Writer’s Guild of America do her fighting for her.

But it is also not a generalized attack at the press as a concept like Trump. It seems to be a specific targeted complaint at a single organization that Sen. Sanders believes is treating him unfairly.

    Wuhan Coronavirus

One other point that it worth noting. Someone please check my math but I’m showing the death rate up to 3%. Is that something to worry about?

Star Trek Thread: Set Picard to Stun (spoilers)

Melinda Snodgrass who created the Character of “Bruce Maddox” in The Measure of a Man is apparently not getting paid for the character she created as she is supposed to be under the Writer’s Guild rules.

Star Trek Thread: Set Picard to Stun (spoilers)

I loved Stargate: Universe. It was light decades better than Star Trek: Voyager.
  15. So, a comment from the Star Trek: Picard thread prompted this thread: Does anyone really like the idea of "The Singularity" or "Nerd Rapture" (that I prefer)? I find the idea terrifying and am in no way comforted that a simulation of me would live on inside a computer simulation. No matter how good that simulation of me is it is not me. It will not have continuity with my consciousness and I will still cease to exist. Why does anyone see this as a viable mechanism for prolonging life? You still cease to exist. Your body still dies. I'll be honest I gave up on Neal Stephenson's most recent novel Fall: or Dodge in Hell specifically because it was walking down "the Singularity" highway. Why is the Singularity appealing to people?

Why does anyone like the idea of "the Singularity"

Again, how much Church history do you know. The idea of what constitutes “orginal sin” in the Orthodox East is very different from the idea of “Original Sin” in the Roman Catholic/Protestant West. The difference matters as in the East it is the world, not every individual human being, that is fallen. So, the creation story in Genesis doesn’t have to be taken literally for it to have impact. It can be recognized as an allegory attempting to understand and explain the origins of humanity in a story that is not 100% fact. What I find frustrating is your claim that everything in the bible has to be entirely literally true or none of it is true. That’s clearly a false dichotomy. You also claim that something must be repeatable to be true. How do you square that with Hume’s criticism of inductive reasoning (Empricism)? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_of_induction From the link:

How much Church history do you actually know? Literalist, Sola Scriptura is a low church Protestant creation. It was not the Church tradition for the first 1500 years of the Chruch’s tradition.

    1917 film (spoilers)

So, I had the opportunity to see this film at a sneak peek showing last night. It was incredible. A hard film to watch but hard to look away from at the same time. The long tracking shot which gives the appearance that there were no breaks in the film start to finish draws you in. The landscape of the First World War was nightmarish in the extreme. I think the nightmare metaphore is deliberate the way in a dream something idilic can immediately shift into horror and back again. The acting was top rate (I didn’t realize one of the leads was Tommen until I left the theater). Understated with sincere emotional impact as good acting should be. When this film is released take the time to see it.

    Star Trek: Picard

It’s separate holograms, there’s an EMH, an ENH, an EHH, I think another one EMH is the “Emergency Medical Hologram”. What are the ENH and the EHH?

They’re also easier for you to argue with.

Why does anyone like the idea of "the Singularity"

I would argue my faith is more mystical than the fundamentalist’s faith: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/badcatholic/2014/02/creationism-is-materialisms-creation.html

Why does anyone like the idea of "the Singularity"

Because it’s my faith. I don’t ask much less insist that you share it. My point with the Origen quote is simply that it is inaccurate to claim that Christians have always believed as modern American Evangelical Fundamentals do. Origen wrote that in the 3rd Century AD.
