    Wuhan Coronavirus

Just saw this graphic this morning. The current outbreak appears to have a higher morbidity (infection) rate than SARS but, potentially a lower mortality rate. Unfortunately, mortality js a trailing indicator: https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-02-20-intl-hnk/h_7c179ea62f273795ea3e7aed212689ee

Yes. Post-Apocalyptic without going supernatural. It speaks to the need to do more than merely survive and the importance of art in that context. I enjoyed it.

US based airlines are canceling flights too and from China. Did they do that during the SARS outbreak? https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/01/us/coronavirus-us-massachusetts/index.html from the article:

Ah. I would have recognized PRC (“People’s Republic of China”). Sorry CCP flew over my head.

There has been a fair amount of discussion of China. The exchange asking whether this outbreak starting in a nation not unwilling to use force to enforce quarantine was just one example.
  9. I think FB’s point is that there is a difference between being “labeled” a socialist and proudly claiming to be a socialist. I don’t have a problem with folks claiming to be socialist but in the US people hear “socialist” and immediately think Soviet Union.

So, it was hypothetical substance in the Prime universe that could be synthesized not one that occurs naturally?
  12. The Constitution itself provides limited direction. Case law will at least provide justification, explanation, and the idea that the majority of the Court agreed with the holding offered. Here there is no text explicitly giving the Chief Justice the power to break ties in an impeachment trial. There is no opinion of the court explaining its rationale. Finally, it was the action of Chief Justice Salmon B. Chase alone without the support of other justices. It doesn’t rise to the level of precedence the way old SCOTUS holdings do. Stare Decisis doesn’t apply in this context. To bring this back to ground it doesn’t surprise me in the least that this is Robert’s position.

What a gigantic douchebag. Regarding this comment and his climate change comment. This is simply further confirmation that Trump surrounds himself with terrible, terrible, people.
  15. What blows me away are people using the “both sides” argument to justify and offer apologia for Trump’s abuses of power. As though abuse of power by anyone in the office of President should be tolerated and expected. It shouldn’t. If a Democratic candidate wins the White House in 2020 and attempts to push agendas using the same arguments offered by Trump’s team I will maintain my objections.
  16. That’s funny. Random and bizzare, but funny.
  17. As to the second comment... ewwwwwww...
  18. I sincerely hope there are political consequences for those who supported “no witnesses”.

  21. Link? I floored that anyone would think “Executive Privilege” would apply in the context of trial for removal from office.

That’s an interesting point. Are people more inclined to panic because a disease is new than one they are familiar with but don’t realize how dangerous it actually is?
  23. I’m going to say the same thing I just said to a Trump supporter on Facebook who called the impeachment trial a “sham” (for very different reasons than you have). It’s not a sham because it’s not a trial in the sense of an alleged criminal being put on trial for a crime. There is no possibility of the Senate doing anything other than removing Trump from office and stripping his ability to run for public office in the future. It is a political process. Same as in the house. Thinking of the process as a criminal trial actually plays into the Trumpanista claim that Trump is being denied “due process”. I’d like to see witnesses called as well but because the process is political, not legal, the process is whatever the Senate decides it should be.
  24. Post-modernism/post-struturalism suggests that we cannot provide genuinely objective observations of the world. That our own biases, perspectives, and even the intermediation of our own senses between our mind and the world limits our ability to speak of anything “objectively”. Therefore, while “objective truth” may exist it is virtually impossible for Humans to express such truth. Should we try? Discuss.
