I like the word apologia. It encompasses much of what people here do (myself included) in not quite endorsing particular points of view but attempting to walk back claims those views are really bad. It is pointing out nuance… and isn’t all that bad a thing to do. -

Noting the 9/11 hijackers put their lives on the line isn’t complementing bravery and by extension… apologia? -

You really want to offer apologia for the 9/11 hijackers? I honestly feel sorry for Russian soldiers… they really have a shit deal. -
US Politics: The sides have gotten… weird
Ser Scot A Ellison replied to Ser Scot A Ellison's topic in General Chatter
Before I abandoned twitter several months ago I ran into far too many partisans for the non-state actor making that precise argument for me to be particularly skeptical of it. The non-state actor is really bad news and that doesn’t excuse the excesses of the State actor. -

The state entity not being discussed is absolutely wrong when it targets or takes actions that increase civilian casualties. I hold the non-state actor to the same standards when it deliberately targets civilians for murder. Claiming X has no civilians… is way the fuck beyond the pale for me. -

The 2017 total solar eclipse that passed over Columbia SC when I lived there… I have to say… is one of the few times when a hyped event was, in my earnest opinion, underhyped. It was one of coolest things I have ever seen in my life. Seeing stars in the middle of the afternoon and being completely surrounded by dawn light was awesome in the most true sense of the word. If you have an opportunity to experience this… do it! -

Dune part 2: the spoilers must flow (Spoilers for the movies)
Ser Scot A Ellison replied to Kalbear's topic in Entertainment
Nope… in the first film you see a ship passing through a Highliner with a blue planet seen through the hole in the ship in the background. -

Then why do the Highliners look like fixed portals that smaller ships pass through instead of starships? -

Does the Spacing Guild exist in the Villenue Dune Universe? The Highliners look more like stargates than starships. -

They do state unequivocally that Trump was defeated in the 2020 election and refer to him as “Former President Trump”. -

I don’t want Trump to hold office ever again. But I do think the 9-0 holding is significant and allowing enforcement of the 14th amendment, section 3 on a piecemeal State by State basis is non-viable. -

I didn’t say federal office. I said State office. The opinion specifically states do have the power to enforce 14th Amendment, Section 3 as to State officials. -

Nope. The New Mexico election official who was removed for participating in the insurrection, under the text of this holding, stays removed unless Congress restores his ability to hold office by a two thirds majority. If the decision is as bad as you claim why did Sotamayor, Jackson, and Kagan join in the result in the per curium decision? -

Allowing individual State to make this call was always a hard sell. This isn’t a huge win for Trump… the certification of the power of State officials to determine candidates for State offices may be DQ’d under the 14th isn’t insignificant. -

I never said that would surprise me. I said it wouldn’t. I said the alternative ruling was… possible. This was a 9-0 ruling. So… all three liberals joined in. -

There’s an episode where Ross gets in trouble with Rachel’s dad because Ross thinks Rachel’s dad is stingy on tips. -
