  1. I keep seeing that stated. We cannot (I use “cannot” deliberately) know that. We know their rough location compared to their parent stars and their rough size. No more. That isn’t enough to say they can support life… much less technologically advanced life. Consider if a technologically advanced civilization had visit Earth during the million years of the Great Dying would they have said Earth was “habitability”?
  2. More space means more opportunities for intelligent life to arrise. The Fermi paradox asks why haven’t we hear them? The question holds. I do think there is other life in the universe probably intelligent life… it’s simply interesting the we haven’t heard it yet.
  3. Isn’t that the “Dark Forest” hypothesis?
  4. Interesting. How do you address the Fermi Paradox?
  5. And that’s wrong in my earnest assessment.
  6. How else would you bar parents from teaching their kids about their religious beliefs? I’m very confused.
  7. So… you would empower the State to impose criminal sanction upon parents who teach their kids about their faith? Look I don’t think all parents are perfect but that seems like… a lot… of power in the hands of the State.
  8. Last night I dreamt that I grew my hair long and that it was very dark… (I’ve always had sandy blond/light brown hair) that I decided to attend a work function in a dress. Got to the door and decided that was a poor idea then struggled to get back up to a hotel room to change into a suit. I don’t ever recall having another dream like that one.
  9. Where are you going with that? Would you prohibit parents from teaching their children about their faith?
  10. No. They were very good fighters and defeated several units of Saudaukar during the sneak attack on Duke Leto. What they weren’t was well organized. Leto was excited by the prospect of recruiting Fremen into the Atreides army. He just didn’t have time to pull that off. Paul essentially excuted Leto’s plan to organize the Fremen into an effective fighting force… after Leto was killed.
  11. It seems Mr. McCarty is moving to the “find out” side of the famous equation. It seems he showed up last minute at Eastercon in the UK (where the Hugo Finalists were announced) and was declined a memebership then had to be escorted out by security when he made a stink and refused to leave. https://file770.com/person-refused-membership-by-uk-eastercon-and-escorted-out-by-security/comment-page-1/#comments [Edit to add] Why is Ben Yalow still on the Mark Protection Committee?
  12. So… no long term consequences for this intra-party factional fighting? [DMC thank you for the correction]
  13. I don’t think I’d go… quite… that far… but I really don’t like them.
  14. That’s interesting. I will concede that many of the people I attend church with weekly are “conservative”. But what I find is their “conservatism” is more thoughtful and subtle than that we experience on line tends to be. I know I don’t advocate for things I advocated for when I started posting here 21 years ago. But it isn’t because I don’t value the things I valued then. I do. I simply think I’ve become more pragmatic about addressing those concerns. Many of the “conservatives” I attend church with agree along those lines. They see the danger of the hair on fire crazies backing Trump and his conspiracy bullshit. They want stability returned. I don’t know if my parish and my parish priests are particularly good at fostering thoughtful discourse or not but I don’t see many kooks at the parish I attend. I’m sure their are some… but… they tend to keep quiet and not garner recruits.
  15. Damn. The level of cynicism and arrogance in US Corporate culture is insane. No wonder these shits like Trump. He’s their wunderkind. He makes money without having to build anything and somehow his illegal actions in making that money never quite stick to him. He’s the pinnacle of everything they want to accomplish. :beats head against desk:
  16. But not enough to claim that all Christians, by virtue of being Christian, are jointly responsible for Trump.
