  1. This type of shit is happening throughout the US and often is due to local governments' housing initiatives.
  2. I think The Wire had an affect on this widespread perception, but Baltimore generally gets a bad rap. Yes, it has one of the highest crime rates in the country, but its economy is also one of the fastest growing in the country - and there's plenty of awesome areas to visit throughout the city. I always love going to Baltimore, and will continue to.
  3. Sure, it was certainly less wrong than others, but 38% and a 10 day delay is not nearly "pennies on the dollar" in my understanding of the idiom, especially considering Trump said he'll pay it despite requesting it to be reduced to under $100 million. Seems weird to take a victory lap. As of now, Baltimore police are saying "absolutely no indication" of terrorism.
  4. Good question! It's certainly not anybody who argued "they'll settle for pennies on the dollar," right? Because last time I checked doing basic math, $175 million in relation to $454 million is not "pennies on the dollar." More like a quarter, a dime, and then a few pennies. And you know what they say - a hundred million here, a hundred million there, and pretty soon you're talking real money. Anyway, I do agree that this obsession with how much Trump will have to pay is thoroughly beside the point. I don't give a shit if he lives the rest of his life on a golden toilet flying a diamond airplane as long as he's not president again.
  5. Road House sucks ass. Not the new one, the original. It's funny in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 way, but otherwise, that movie is a piece of shit on Swayze's flowing locks. There, I said it.
  6. I suspect the post was referring to/copying and pasting something related to this - Supreme Court seems favorable to Biden administration over efforts to combat social media posts.
  7. Other than surviving an assassination attempt and retiring, like Costello, Vito is almost entirely based on Luciano in terms of his role in the development of cosa nostra in the US. That being said, Luciano was an entirely different "character" than what we see with Vito being the lovable grandpa in 1 and even his stolid character depicted by De Niro in 2. Vito - and Michael for that matter - can't directly be related to any real-life figure specifically. They are distinctly Puzo's creations.
  8. Yeah that's my recollection too. I especially find it weird because they already have enough characters. Plus..the team doesn't really need him? One thing I liked about the eps was everyone seems sufficiently powered up, as if they're in their "primes," and thus can much more easily handle most threats than most of the original series. I'm assuming they have Bishop around because they're going to do something with him down the line - thinking something to do with Madelyn? Aye, me too. I guess it makes sense in that they want to make it a "surprise" to new viewers when he shows up again, but..it's also gonna be really strange if the team is NOT surprised given how they are talking about him. Or they're just retconning shit... Yeah I figured it was from the comics. And yes - they already alluded to a previous relationship in the scene where it was brought up. Still find it weird -- especially if you consider the original series canon, it's really awkward that this was never an issue previously. Anyway, the only other thing I wanted to mention is I find it very amusing they couldn't wait to have their January 6th reference by the second episode. A lot of that depiction was REALLY on the nose. Which is fine for a kids show - and this is still plainly geared towards kids - but I find that interesting in and of itself. Are they expecting kids to watch the original series, or just kinda trying to toe the line between those of us coming for the nostalgia and new/younger viewers?
  9. Yeah he was in a couple episodes. Just watched the first two eps. I should get to bed, but very quickly - kinda weird that Bishop is now just part of the team. Did that happen within the original series and I just don't remember? Also, what's up with Eric and Rogue? Don't remember that ever being a thing, at least in the cartoon. Finally, really liked how they showed how powerful Storm can be. It always bothered me as a kid that they never really established how awesome her abilities should intuitively be.
  10. At this point the conspiracy talk is only among willing - and even enthusiastic - participants in such nattering.
  11. To be clear, I am not questioning the credibility of the Financial Times reporting. I'm highly confident they did have multiple quality sources that told the FT exactly what they reported they said. However, that still leaves a lot that we don't know - to what extent this preference was expressed, how it was expressed, who within the administration expressed it and to whom within Ukraine's regime it was expressed to, etc...
  12. Yeah I saw this this morning. It doesn't matter. I fully expect Murkowski to change her party affiliation to Independent if Trump wins in November. But unless she stops caucusing with the Republicans, it makes no difference. Just like Sinema's switch.
  13. LOL. Right, because fear of retaliation is the only way to affect the behavior of adversaries when it comes to warfare.
  14. K. I don't view this as a priority, and again, I think it over-complicates things.
  15. Hey, that's always better than 20 seconds too soon.
  16. It was a report by the Financial Times. The Biden administration has refused to comment on the record, or even really say one way or another off the record.
  17. The causal inference(s) between Ukraine hitting Russian refineries and hurting Biden's electoral chances is incredibly weak (not to mention convoluted). The much greater concern is normalizing this type of tactic into SOP for warfare - and, particularly, our adversaries starting to target western countries' refineries. That's something we definitely don't want. Also, should be noted Ukraine has denied the US made such a request (and the Biden administration is not commenting).
  18. Heh. I mean, the obvious answer is just to have them grandfathered in (pretty apt term too!) and wait until the seat is vacant for the new legislation to apply. However, I suspect many interests and subsequently many MCs would be adamantly opposed to this.
  19. I think the wheel proposal is a bit convoluted. Simply having 18-year terms for all new justices is much simpler. It'd also practically enact a retirement age - no president is going to nominate a justice old enough to serve past 75 at the oldest. Of course, what to do with sitting justices would be much more difficult to figure out.
  20. Breyer indicates support for age limits for Supreme Court Justices: I may be way off on this, but I can't recall any SC justice - sitting or retired - that has publicly come out in favor of term limits in any way. So, kinda a big deal.
  21. Yeah you conveniently left out the fact the jury's judgment also found Trump liable for sexual abuse and forcible touching of said woman. Not to mention the only reason the jury did not find Trump liable for rape is the fact New York has an arcane legal definition of the term. This is actually the most reasonable thing you've posted on these threads in years. It is true that resigning early instead of retiring by serving out one's term is violating their commitment to the voters. It is also true that MCs usually do so to land a more lucrative job - or at least a job they desire more. An example of the latter would be Ben Sasse resigning mid-term to become president of the University of Florida. This is in no way a conspiracy, but both these points are entirely valid.
  22. As long as we're all being smartasses, should be clear Boeing is one of the largest defense contractors in the US (and subsequently the world) along with Lockheed and RTX. Nearly half their revenue comes from the federal government. And not just for building aircraft, but also, ya know, weapons and defense systems and the like. Just a few weeks ago they were awarded a contract by the US Space Force to build a WGS communications satellite.
  23. Yep. The argument for aggressive government investment given the current state of the UK economy isn't MMT, it's just a return to basic Keynesianism.
  24. I'd give the slight edge to Shaun of the Dead, but I think both it and Hot Fuzz are roughly equally awesome. What was disappointing was the third leg of the Cornetto trilogy - The World's End.
  25. It was? Cool, impressed you remember that. Was it a meet cute?
