  1. This is a classic post hoc fallacy. Johnson was talking about doing exactly what he did well before the Iran attacks last week. And indeed, the reason it was only brought up this week was because of other business the House was dealing with beforehand (e.g. the FISA bill).
  2. Thanks! It would fail right now. Apparently their hope is it will gain steam with the week recess. Plus, ya know, MCs often just want to go home. How this influences congressional behavior cannot be underestimated.
  3. Couple news items I feel should be mentioned - especially after all the right wing consternation a few months back that continues. USC barred their own valedictorian from making a pro-Palestinian speech at commencement out of “security concerns.” In addition, Barnard suspended Ilhan Omar’s daughter for staging a pro-Palestinian protest. But, sure, academia is infested with “wokism.”
  4. The 34 that voted against the Taiwan bill were all Republicans - and all the people you would expect to vote no on virtually anything. I encourage looking up the roll call, as these are the people that don’t even belong in student government - especially Gaetz - let alone the United States Congress.
  5. The House just passed the Ukraine aid measure 311-112. They also passed the measure with the TikTok ban 360-58. ETA: The Taiwan measure also passed 385 to 34. All that’s left is the Israeli measure which they’re voting on now. And now the Israel measure passed 366 to 58, completing the bundling of all four.
  6. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, children can begin working at 14 in non-agricultural jobs. I started working at 15. It’s SUPPOSED to be, however, highly regulated and limited, at least up until 16 (when you’re legally allowed to drop out of school).
  7. Debate started at 9, the vote is expected to take place around 1. ETA: Voting is expected to begin around 1. Amendments, the GOP border bill that won’t pass. It’ll be a while before they get to the four main measures.
  8. Gotta say, I have sincere doubts this will have much of an impact quelling any potential contagion effect.
  9. Really, other than Boston, I wouldn’t be shocked at any upset in terms of seeding. Would I pick any right now? I guess Mavs over Clippers, but that’s pretty weak.
  10. Ah, guess I kinda misunderstood what you were saying. Sure, the media should generally follow those guidelines as I understand them. Albeit avoiding reporting the method in such cases is, indeed, rather impossible.
  11. Juan Soto is going to make a trillion dollars in the fall and will be worth every penny. Volpe deserves credit as he looks like he’s becoming a star, but Soto almost single-handedly transformed the Yankees lineup from shit to championship-caliber.
  12. Porzingis gives them something they’ve never had. And Holiday is better than Smart. They’re less deep of course, but again, as long as they stay healthy that ultimately won’t matter. Their point differential rather conclusively demonstrates they’re better than previous years.
  13. Sure. But the path to the finals looks especially easy this year as long as they stay healthy. Plus, ya know, these Celtics are a distinctly different team.
  14. I dunno, this line of thought seems to suggest an impossible standard for the media to uphold. Coverage of all types of horrible events/actions can potentially motivate those in a vulnerable emotional state. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be covered.
  15. My obvious point is Butler is out.
  16. I mean, Miami had Jimmy Butler last season. DeRozan is a free agent.
  17. I’ve heard this before and I never got it. If I end up in the ER you think I’m gonna be embarrassed by my boxers/underwear? Like, as if those workers don’t deal with horrible shit every damn shift.
  18. This reminds me when I was in high school, I think 16, we went on a family vacation to Kiawah, SC. It was only my dad and I at the place we were staying at. I was..using the restroom, and I looked down and saw the biggest spider I’ve ever seen - still to this day. Now I’ve always been fine about killing critters. But with this one, I got up, went to my dad, and was like “that’s all you man.” He chuckled and was like OK, then went into the bathroom and literally was like “oh fuck!” We still laugh about it to this day.
  19. I always knew the monorail song was a clarion call for the eventual fascist takeover. Indeed. Quite the unusual form of protest for that ilk.
  20. It’d be a disastrous disappointment if the Celtics don’t at least make the finals. Was listening to a Simmons/Russillo pod the other day and it was funny how Bill was already mentally/emotionally preparing himself for such a cataclysm.
  21. It means the leaker didn’t wanna go on the record because it’s technically against policy. Anyway, interesting looking at this morning’s roll call and the 39 Dems that voted against the rule. It’s of course your general Squad/progressive left types, but some prominent names include Jim Clyburn, Debbie Dingell, Robert Garcia, Ro Khanna, Jamie Raskin, Bennie Thompson, and Lauren Underwood. Also, Jasmine Crockett, who’s quickly becoming one of my favorite MCs (not due to this vote, tbc).
  22. Weird thing for me is while I’m fine with heights when I’m conscious, I have a lot of dreams where I’m terrified of heights/falling one way or another. Really big critters freak me out, but I wouldn’t really call that a phobia. Like, during the Superbowl I saw about a three inch cockroach on the ceiling of my kitchen. It freaked me out, but I still grabbed a paper towel and killed it.
  23. Pretty much. I go into detail about the provisions in that posts. It’s just commonly referred to as the TikTok ban. Should be noted though the bill will ban TikTok in the US if ByteDance doesn’t divest in a year.
  24. Yeah it seems oxymoronic to call an airstrike deescalating, but this appears to be. Also seemed to piss off Bibi’s far right, Ben Gvir calling it lame on X. When you’re pissing those guys off, you know you’re doing something right.
  25. There’s an important wrinkle in the rule that was passed: This is important because the fourth bill includes the TikTok ban/forced divestiture. Considering these all look almost certain to reach Biden’s desk at this point, wanted to note that because this is INCREDIBLY unpopular with young people. I have no problem having civil discussions on Israel/Hamas in my classes, but when I bring up the TikTok ban things get heated FAST. ETA: One important difference between this measure and the previous ban that passed the House but stalled in the Senate is this one would give ByteDance essentially a full year to divest whereas the previous bill only gave them six months. I guess they’re hoping that will quell electoral backlash since it probably won’t happen by November, but I wouldn’t count on it.
