  1. I'll go through the articles when I am done with the images. And now for something completely different: as of this day we have 5000 articles!!! Congrats everybody!!!
  2. I noticed that on the wiki there are more people who think that some of the articles are getting too large: Aegon Targaryen, opinion by Citizen snips Skahaz_mo_Kandaq: opinion by Erick Mirri Maz Duur, opinion by Merla And I think KamiShikkaku's opinion has not changed nor has mine so I hope we can conclude this discussion.
  3. So? How is that relevant? Remember the article is about Thorne. This is not the article "Reception of the Night's Watch request by the Small Council with all comments"
  4. Ofcourse you are allowed your opinion about the Tyion article but it was suggested as feature article by a number of users. So it is what they feel an article should be. And we have agreed a long time ago that we use the feature articles as models. I agree that your paraphrase of Thorne's meeting with the council goes beyound his request. That is exactly what I find fault in it. The article should be about Thorne and what he did. That does include every single detail about HOW he did it and all the thought of other about that (How) part. Else it is not a summary anymore but a complete retelling of the books. For example that Littlefinger makes as a jape about the dangers the Night's watch faces says something about Littlefinger's character and the image of the Night's watch. So include a reference there. Of Thorne it says little to nothing so it should be left out.
  5. First of all let me say that before Dimadick started on these articles most of them were very summary and without references. So I think his work improved them. Also we don't "do something about somebody". We try to improve the wiki! Back on topic: yes I would say that the articles are getting somewhat too large. In the example above of Aliser Thorne's meeting with the council we do not need the complete dialogue. His demand and the reaction should be enough with the possible addition of Tyrion's motives. How long and detailed an perfect articles is... Hmm that is a difficult question. We use the articles of Jaime and of Tyrion as models how we want articles to be but this is not exact. Generally speaking and article should not contain a lot of dialogues. Including dialogues or quotes in an article can be useful but we should keep in mind that the article is about somebody or something; it is not the book itself.
  6. That is probably because there is no clear explanation in the books. Knighthood is linked to the Faith of the Seven. However in the North the faith in the Old Gods is still strong. Because of this there are not a lot of knights in the North but they do have the title "master" for vassals that have land but do not have the title "lord". So it seems to be the equivalent of the landed knight. Take note that the explanation above is based on logical (I hope) reasoning. I don't remember the books explaining the word "master". Maybe the World of Ice and Fire will have some info about this.
  7. For me with all skins it looks normal. Anybody else who has the same problem?
  8. With me iit looks normal. Which browser do you use? And do you have a particular skin (see preferences)?
  9. A few screenshots from the TV series can be considered "fair use". So that would not be a problem. The thing is where to place it. We agreed that the image that is used in the character template, top right of the article, should match the description of the person in the books. For most characters there usually are drawings that match the description closer then the actors.
  10. For the past / present tense I think the direction is still to use past tense for events that occur before the books and present tense for the events in the book. For the information in the templates (noble house, character and so) there was the problem what we should show if there is a change in the books. For instance a new heir, a new marriage, a character dying and so on. The idea was to investigate if we could use the hide / show feature. The software has been installed for some time ago and we have been experimenting with this. It is just that we feel that it does not look very good (yet). Come to think of it we (Mor2 and me) have mainly been look at using the hide / show feature for the sections of the article that handle a particular book.. Not for the templates. And I think that for the templates it would look ok. Suggestion: If the content of a template (for instance the character template) contains information that is directly linked to an event that occurs during the time of the books (for instance a marriage) we set the table to hidden.
  11. I noticed that we currently have to articles that are called Siege of Storm's End. Or to be precise we have: Siege of Storm’s End -> this article is about the confrontation between Stannis and Renly Siege of Storm's End -> this article is about the siege during Robert's Rebellion For clarity I propose that we add the year in the title of booth articles. So the event during the Robert's Rebellion will be named: Siege of Storms's End (283 AL) and the confrontation between Stannis and Renly Siege of Storm's End (299 AL).
  12. We are connected to the French and Russian wiki by means of interlinks but we are all separate wiki's with each its own rules and maintenance. That is not to say that we never look how the other wiki's are doing things or that we never copy. But each wiki makes its own choices.
  13. Hi Sumpfkraut, Our wiki is only in English. If you can help out that would be great. There is always enough to do. On our Community portal there is short list of projects on which we are currently working. Of course there is more then the list. A lot changes are done by people who are reading the wiki and discovering errors. If your idea is to work on a German wiki than an option would be to found one. I have described in this discussion how one could do that. Some time ago I tried to search for A Song of Ice and Fire wiki's in other languages and made this list. As you can see there are two German language wiki's for the series. Only at the moment nobody is working on it. The wikia one has more articles and is looking for administrators. But again if you want to contribute on our English wiki then you are more then welcome!
  14. I agree with Ran. Before ADWD was published there were a few spoiler chapter out as well. One of them was a Jon chapter which was changed in the book.
  15. The content of the wiki should be based on the books, remarks from GRRM or other sources like the games and the TV series. So with that in mind go ahead. The remark from GRRM about the seasons certainly belong here.
  16. Our French friends have included information about the board games in the Wiki (for instance with Houses that have held Harrenhal). So I am in favor of doing the same. We should add a reference so every reader can see where the information comes from.
  17. You can add to booth articles that the description of the two is the same. That is what we did with Jaqen H'ghar and the Alchemist.
  18. It was part of the old main page. Must have forgotten it when I redesigned it to the new one. In the Tower of the Hand it is possible to choose the book where you are and then in pages you only see information up until that books. That is possible (after the extension is added) but it will be a lot of work to make the code and to link the information to a book (or maybe just to two level one with and the other without the spoilers).
  19. Shell we discuss the TV series here? It just that if you want to find a certain subject again it helps if the discussion about is in one place.
  20. First install the extensions and then add something to the css/js? Currently booth are not possible due to the broke bridge
  21. It is possible to have a show/hide button for the complete character box but I think that is going a bit far. And making a template that works like the Tower of this hand in which you can display information up until a certain book is going to be very very difficult. And it may make the articles less easy to change -> we would have to tie the items in the box to a certain book. And this would make it harder to understand where the regular text ends and where the code for the template begins. I guess that would make it unsuitable for a Wiki. What we could do is for all articles about characters that are involved in major events (marrying, dying, loosing an bodypart and so on) in ADWD is to add a template with a massive text saying "SPOILERS". Edit: Yes I think for the show / hide a change in the common.css and common.js is needed. But that is currently not possible.
  22. Welcome Mrandy / Andy, 1 Have you tried going to the wiki using the Wiki "button" at the top of the page (between Members and Chat)? It is unfortunately no guarantee. The problem is that due to high traffic load the connection between the forum and the wiki does not work properly. 2 We have been thinking about adding extra filters (Show/Hide option) ; for some spoilers. I have an idea how to handle this but for it to work we need and extension of the wiki. And that is at the moment not possible (same problem as the Forum -> wiki connection). 3 For the maps I agree that the book maps are superior but we (at least me) are not sure if we are allowed to use them. They are copyright and may not fall under Fair Use. Besides the ideal from the Wiki foundation is to use material that is free to use for all. I think that if we ask the copyright holders may allow us to show the maps on 1 page. But we use the fan maps for a lot of pages. I doubt we would be allowed to do so with the book maps. Besides usually the creator / copyright holder does not allow changes. So if we would want to show Winterfell on the map we would have to show the complete map and not a part like we are doing at the moment.
  23. One of Amoka's pictures of Tyrion is also very different then GRRM describes him. So using a picture instead of a shot from the series is no guarantee that it is confirm the books. Artist or actor it is all interpretation. But I you see a good picture and get the permission of the artist then by all means add it!
  24. Thanks for you support.

I did not want overact but I was a bit disappointed with his lack of action.

  25. About Gerold Dayne: he is from the cadet branch; House Dayne of High Hermitage so he is probably a very distant cousin. House Dayne of High Hermitage has its own page like the two houses of House Vance and the houses of house Flint.
