Astounding discovery of how a popular TV show got its name from ASOIAF (this is a "reverse reference" though):
-
Movie's from the 2000s. The books are from the 90s. Definitely coincidence.

Hell yeah! Continuing more with the Byzantine theme, we have an usurper, named Basil the Macedonian who killed the previous ruler, Michael the Drunkard. Basil was later on killed in a 'hunting accident' In which he was allegedly stabbed by the antlers of a STAG. The parallels with Robert Baratheon, who usurped the throne from Aerys the Mad, was also killed in a hunting accident and whose house sigil was a stag are pretty staggering.

Just reading a history of the Byzantine Empire, it seems there are quite a few parallels. Including the above post, Maegor the Cruel: Constantine V Cersei: Irene of Athens, self proclaimed 'empress' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irene_of_Athens) Wildfire: Greek fire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_fire) Hallyne/pyromancers: Callinicus Kings Landing: Constantinople

Maegor the Cruel seems at least partly inspired by the iconoclastic Byzantine emperor Constantine V: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_V

How would you rate episode 307?
thenedstark replied to Ran's topic in E07: The Bear and the Maiden Fair
Loved all the dialogues. Tywin and Joffrey was awesome. The bear scene was amazing, needless to say. 10/10 ETA: Great to see Arya's story progressing and Bran's journey being something other than his dreams. Bran and Hodor are heading north!- 383 replies

I second this.

Davos' appearance at the court of Wyman Manderley reminded me of the appearance of Bilbo and the dwarves in the court of the Elven King in Mirkwood in The Hobbit.

Hello all. I became a fan of the TV series late last year and after that, eagerly consumed the first 4 books (audiobook format) in a few months time. Currently, I'm halfway through the audiobook of A Dance With Dragons. I also contribute minor stuff to the westeros wiki. Glad to be part of this forum.
