Personally I don't find the first half to be that bad, but on the other hand, I don't find the second half to be that great. The finale is superb, though.

Of course? I was under the impression that Believers was generally quite highly regarded. The parents were acting within the accepted bounds of their culture; they would have mourned the loss of their kid and moved on. Earth law wouldn't apply. Yes, that's something I like about the show.

There are plenty of references to post-1990s history, some plot-relevant and some just background colour - the bombing of San Diego, humanity's first contact with the Centauri, the Earth-Minbari War, the destruction of the first Mars colony, the Centauri occupation of Narn, etc. And the newspapers are more sophisticated than they look; they're print-on-demand, customised to reader preferences, and can be returned to the dispenser for recycling/updating.

Yes, I'd strongly suggest leaving the movies till after the series (aside from the pilot, of course). The list is chronologically accurate (mostly - Lost Tales comes after Crusade, and Legend of the Rangers before A Call to Arms), but it interrupts the flow of the series. And for within each season, there's a recommended viewing order for the episodes. The pilot isn't all that great, and some people aren't fond of the first season either (I'm a fan, though!) so persevere if the show doesn't grab you immediately. I like Crusade, though what order to watch it in is a real nightmare due to network meddling (eg there are two different first episodes). If you can tolerate a lack of closure, I'd recommend it.
