  1. Fallout series first-look images reveal Power Armor and Walton Goggins' Ghoul
The upcoming adaptation from Prime Video tackles many iconic elements of the beloved video game franchise.

Fallout stars Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) as Lucy, an optimistic Vault Dweller with an all-American can-do spirit, whose idealistic nature is tested when people harm her loved ones. Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) plays Hank, the Overseer of Vault 33 and Lucy’s father, who is eager to change the world for the better. Aaron Moten plays Maximus, a young soldier hiding his tragic past as he serves in a militaristic faction called Brotherhood of Steel. He believes in the nobility of the Brotherhood's mission to bring law and order to the Wasteland and will do anything to further their goals. Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones, Justified) stars as the Ghoul, a pragmatic and ruthless survivor who trawls the Wasteland as a bounty hunter. Irradiated Ghouls are one of the most recognizable elements of the Fallout franchise, and here, Goggins combines their iconic look with a Westworld-esque cowboy outfit.

  2. ‘It should never have happened’: death of boy, 16, at sawmill highlights rise of child labour in US

    https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2023/nov/28/it-should-never-have-happened-death-of-boy-16-at-sawmill-highlights-rise-of-child-labour-in-us

Michael Schuls died after getting trapped in dangerous machinery at a mill in Wisconsin. But across the US conservative groups are pushing to loosen laws that protect children in the workplace

    Quote

According to a Florence County sheriff’s office report, when the conveyor machine became jammed Michael stepped on to it to try to straighten the wood, but he had not pressed a safety button to turn it off. The conveyor started to move and he became caught in the machine. The teenager was trapped for 17 minutes before a supervisor, who had been operating a forklift outside, discovered him unconscious.

I've played Cyberpunk 1.0. It was the main game I played for a year and I loved it. And yes, 2.0 is at the top of my list, going to get the DLC, too. I'm stuck in Stellaris jail though right now. It's a mental illness. I used to do the same thing with the original Master of Orion and Stellaris has mostly taken it's place.

  4. Judge and clerk in Trump civil fraud trial have received hundreds of ‘serious and credible’ threats

Hollon said Engoron’s law clerk has received 20-30 calls per day to her personal cell phone and 30-50 messages daily on social media platforms and two personal email addresses.

On a daily basis, he said, the judge and his staff receive hundreds of harassing and threatening phone calls, email and voicemail messages such that security staff are “having to constantly reassess and evaluate what security protections to put in place to ensure the safety of the judge and those around him.”

Since the gag order was lifted on November 16, Hollon said, the number of messages increased. He also said about half of the harassing messages the clerk received were antisemitic.

I've been playing Yakuza 0, my first time trying one of these Yakuza/Like a Dragon games. I love the minigames (especially karaoke and disco dancing), the overall weirdness, and the very funny sidequests

My boss suggested I play that series. I just had no idea where to jump in. I'll probably get to it at some point. Have a huge backlog right now, what with not even having played Cyberpunk 2.0 and BG3.

  6. Wisconsin supreme court appears poised to strike down legislative maps and end Republican dominance
Decision from four liberal justices in lawsuit could eliminate some of the most gerrymandered districts in the United States

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/nov/21/wisconsin-supreme-court-redistricting-lawsuit

    Quote

The Wisconsin supreme court appeared poised to strike down the current maps for the state legislature after three hours of oral argument on Tuesday, a decision that could end more than a decade of Republican dominance and eliminate some of the most gerrymandered districts in the United States.

The four liberal justices on the court all seemed ready to embrace an argument from challengers in the case, Clarke v Wisconsin elections commission, that the maps violate the state constitution because they include more than 70 districts. It was unclear, however, how the justices would handle the redrawing of a map and whether it would immediately order elections for the entire legislature next year in new districts. Wisconsin voters elect 99 assembly members every two years, but only about half of the 33-member state senate would normally be up for election next year.

  7. I like the characters involved (I loved the Ms. Marvel TV show), but I'm just wary of Marvel movies right now as I've been burned several times. And going to the theatre is much more of an investment than watching on TV. I wasn't going to make the effort without good reviews. The last Marvel movie I liked was Dr. Strange 2.

I don't have the same issues with the TV shows. I've yet to run into a Marvel TV show I don't like to some degree. And there's less investment involved. It gives me more content, actually.

I think they are saying the right things about turning the Marvel ship around. But going to a Marvel movie at this particular moment sounds about equally wise to going to one of the last DC movies of the old universe that isn't Batman.

Looking at the statement put out by Mr. Dogg, he's just trying to live longer for his family. I can respect that. I don't smoke for similar reasons. And the statement makes clear that it doesn't rule out edibles.

I don't think the normal rules apply to Willie Nelson. He's like immortal. He's found the vampiric blood cure that Peter Thiel is desperately searching for.

Supreme Court says Florida can’t enforce anti-drag law

The challenge to the law continues at lower courts, and Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law, cautioned against drawing broader implications from Thursday’s order.

“Given the focus on procedural issues in the separate statement from Justices Kavanaugh and Barrett, it’s hard to read any broader implications for anti-drag laws out of the Court’s refusal to un-block Florida’s,” Vladeck said.

“The only thing that seems clear is that three justices are already sympathetic to such laws. Whether there are two more votes to uphold them very much remains to be seen,” he added.

  10. Yeah, I know a lot of smokers. It's common among the working class, people in the trades, and also people formerly involved in the drug culture (probably currently as well) My brother is a smoker. He quit for years, but then it started up again during a time of great stress.

I know 3 smokers in one of my two D&D groups. 2 are in the trades and 1 is a cook that was involved in drug culture.

My job just as the pandemic hit I had these 3 work friends. They were all 3 smokers, but I didn't even know until they invited me outside on the last day after we were laid off.

Edited to add, it's formerly involved in the drug culture because a lot of people that stay involved in it are dead where as smoking doesn't necessarily kill you fast. Had a friend that got addicted to meth, went to prison, got released, and died in a motorcycle accident just after. There's another former friend also addicted to meth that is probably dead, just heard he vanished last year.

That's rich, coming from Kevin McCarthy.

I think he's stunned that his plans went so awry. I'm just kind of shocked about all this. I mean it isn't the first House Speaker devoured by the far right. He thought he was smarter. The last thing he should be is surprised at the outcome.

    Quote

The California Republican reserved his harshest attacks for Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who led the charge for McCarthy’s ouster. McCarthy continually accused Gaetz of only going after him because of a House Ethics Committee probe he’s facing, a charge the GOP hardliner has repeatedly denied.

“I don’t believe them to be conservatives,” McCarthy said of the eight Republicans. “It’s driven by Gaetz, and it was all based upon an ethics complaint that happened in the last Congress. He would throw his country away to try to protect himself for what would come out as the truth.”

McCarthy suggested that Gaetz had called for the vote for McCarthy’s removal – and later backed Mike Johnson’s ascension as speaker – simply to quash the ethics probe.

“If the Ethics Committee never does anything to Gaetz, then Gaetz was successful in stopping probably what rightfully should come to him,” McCarthy said.

  14. Biden campaign slams ‘extreme’ and ‘racist’ Trump immigration plans

Do you have an example of this that isn’t self defense.

Self-defense is a very slippery slope. A terror attack is an automatic blank check to go almost anywhere that won't set off a nuke exchange.

Republicans I hear in the debates are openly discussing invading Mexico to go after drug dealers/smugglers. Self-defense, they're bring drugs here and harming Americans. (We can add Canada to this actually. Not a joke since an actual candidate was talking about building a wall between Canada I believe also over drug-related issues)

They gave a rough outline of dates for future games and it was 2025 for Elder Scrolls and 2030 for Fallout. Those estimates are certain to slip. It probably means we won't see a Starfield 2 until 2040. I'll be something like 64 by then.

It might have taken a few years, but strap on those seat belts because it's finally happening. Ten years on from the most recent addition to its bestselling video game franchise, Rockstar Games have officially revealed that the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is on the way, with the sixth installment getting a trailer next month.

Most likely to be called GTA VI when it releases, Rockstar made the announcement on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle. “We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you,” the company's statement signed by Sam Houser, President of Rockstar read.

It is hard to reconcile the fact that Biden is extremely unpopular and yet Democrats keep having great elections.  In 2010 Obama was very unpopular and the democrats got crushed.  In 2014 Obama was sorta popular (better than Biden!) and the Democrats still got crushed.

We know Presidents get blamed for recessions. I believe this was caused by hangover from the Great Recession which was still going on as late as 2014. It hit Bush in 2006 (and rightfully so as it happened on his watch)

A lot of commentators assume the post pandemic inflation is the exact same thing. Bush got blamed, Obama got blamed, Biden will get blamed. Also, there's Carter getting blamed for the economy and inflation. And then they feel vindicated every negative Biden poll. Maybe Republicans are just failing to provide a good alternative. And there's a lot of Democratic party voters that are kind of stuck. Not just the Left. There's no where to go.

In Arizona, activists are gathering signatures for a 2024 ballot initiative that will ask voters a similar question to Ohio’s this year – a development that already has Republicans there fretting.

“Tonight’s results in Ohio should scare every Republican in a state where an abortion question is on the ballot in 2024,” Arizona Republican strategist Barrett Marson told CNN. “Abortion initiatives are both driving turnout among Democrats and forcing Republicans to talk about an issue of which they are on the wrong side of the electorate.”

A handful of potential swing states, including Pennsylvania, Iowa, Florida and Colorado, could have abortion rights measures on their ballots alongside the presidential candidates next year.

That is too say basically just accuse and castigate every one of your own misdeeds onto the other guys as if they were thier misdeeds instead of exactly the shit you yourself are pulling.

So yeah thats exactly what im expecting out of Trumps 2nd term, a fullcourt, nonstop, weaponized Justice Dept that makes a priority of attacking and prosecuting all of Trumps enemies. Thats his great motivation.

I wonder if Barr is still voting for Trump.

You can’t say Donald Trump didn’t warn us.

Trump and his think tank loyalists are collecting the ingredients and refining the recipe for an authoritarian regime should he win the 2024 presidential election. According to a page one story in The Washington Post Monday, Trump plans on the first day of his new administration to invoke the Insurrection Act so he can dispatch the military to counter any demonstrations that might resist his policies.

Why might he need the Insurrection Act? Well, the piece also notes Trump intends to turbo-politicize the Department of Justice and order prosecutions of his former aides and officials who have criticized him. Perhaps he thinks the country won’t let him go buck wild on the rule of law without a stink, so he wants to be ready to sic troops on the inevitable protestors. Fingered by Trump for legal beat-downs, the Post reports, are one-time Trump stalwarts and staffers like former chief of staff John F. Kelly, former attorney general William Barr, his ex-attorney Ty Cobb, and former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mark A. Milley. Trump has singled out other officials at the FBI and the Department of Justice for prosecution, the piece adds, as well as President Joe Biden and his family.

  22. 'A Murder at the End of the World' Review: Brit Marling & Zal Batmanglij Craft a Twisty Mystery-Thriller
'A Murder at the End of the World' premieres November 14 on Hulu.

    https://collider.com/a-murder-at-the-end-of-the-world-review/

    Quote

Murder mysteries are a conceit that will ironically never die. The whodunit remains eternally compelling because it doesn't just send us on a journey to try and decipher the murderer's identity and motive; it invites us to try and piece together the clues ourselves, to see if we can figure it out before the reveal happens. Pair that with the fact that TV viewers have been ardently waiting for the next big project from longtime creative partners Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, and you've got a series that's already been inviting anticipation.

Good news: A Murder at the End of the World is more than worth the wait. While this show may be more of a straightforward story from the duo compared to earlier works, it takes all the familiar components of a murder mystery and puts surprising spins on them, dropping its characters into a remote environment before the dangerous setting forces them into even closer confinement. As the body count rises and suspicion grows, tensions rise amidst the remaining guests until everyone is eyeing each other differently — but the person ultimately responsible for these murders may be the last one anyone (including us) suspects.
