Argillac the arrogant? Even as an old man he was a human wrecking ball and it’s heavily implied that had he not been exhausted, wounded and as old as he was Orys Baratheon would have died instead. Not to mention his super genes which basically booted out any hint of Targaryen from his line despite the name change

Why didn’t the Wildlings tell the NW about the Others?

I would imagine that for the right price there are thousands of Free Folk that would kneel, unfortunately the only voice they have is that of Mance Rayder, a man who earned the Kingship of a notoriously Kingless folk, for Mance to pass the Wall with his folk he would need to kneel and accept the customs of Westeros and likely forfeit his life to the Watch, no Southron King could accept any less and still possibly would not accept it. If Mance did that and somehow kept his life he would lose the respect of large quantities of the Wildlings, his people would dissolve and he would no longer be a King, when his number should have been up he was happy to allow another to die in his place and only under that mans guise only then would he then bend the knee. Do not underestimate Mance Rayders pride in the unfolding events, once the crown hit his brow he was no different from any of the other 5 Kings south of the Wall

I hate the Starks, should I keep reading?

Kettricken does indeed break top 5, although the only 2 in that 5 which cannot be moved under any circumstances are Burrich and Nighteyes. Yeah, and not only that but her cast is possibly larger, her characters and plots and story possibly more fleshed out and elaborate, and despite the presence of high magic every bit as Human and flawed, yet Hobb seems to be able to overcome these trials.

Also I deserve plaudits for powering through with a sensible answer, my first reply was ‘I hate my girlfriend, should I marry her?’ I shall sit here and await your praise

I hate the Starks, should I keep reading?

Yeah, you should, I take the piss out of his name in my avatar because it took me until the third series of books of which he is the main character for Fitz to even break my top 5 characters of that world, although that is a much more well described world than Planetod so far. As for Planetos, well I cannot stand Dany, sorry not true, I cannot stand Dragons, I can take or leave Dany, her chapters do literally nothing for me unless she has a strong supporting cast, Barristan, Jorah and Missandei. I adore the grim Medieval warfare, the vague hint of magic in the background, I liked Eddard and Robb Stark, was fond of Cat, don’t care for the others. In truth, once Stannis is done, so is my real investment in how things turn out, now there is a compelling character like some of the real worlds most famous generals, I will of course continue reading once he is gone, Davos, Jaime, Brienne, hoping that Tyrion and Littlefinger die, will Danearys really let herself down with regards to Aegon (Gods I hope so)? Jon Connington, the Baratheon succession (if they live and the Targs are gone I shall be crying with laughter), Lady Olenna, Queen Margery, Cersie’s downfall, Tormund and Mance, Oberyns paramour (Westeros’ last remaining voice of reason) all will be worth reading and less than you think will involve the Starks or characters you don’t like, it will still be a good read. The problem is that some characters make you like them too hard and make you turn on their possible enemies or downfalls, I really enjoy Stannis, he reads like one of the better historical people observed by Bernard Cornwells fictional ones, we are talking Alfred the Great and Wellington with an added dose of bastard, I will keep reading when he is gone, as hard as it will be, and will try not to turn my venom on those that bring him down

Well, we kinda forgot about those scenes Did Tyrion hit his head a few too many times in the sea voyage to Danearys?

Greatest battle commanders at the start of ASoIaF

I put Jon Connington in as a dark horse, the guy was obviously a decent commander during RR but has not stagnated, instead learning from mistakes, constantly campaigning and maintaining an edge. Definitely one to watch out for

    All time Top Fighters

Well it’s hard to disagree based on anything other than personal preference, even the truly great fighters in Westeros and elsewhere could be dispatched by dozens, if not hundreds of their counterparts, there are simply too many swordwielders out there to count. Even the loss and death of a participant in a personal duel isn’t a definitive answer of who is better, merely who was better on that day, it’s just unlike in a heavyweight title fight there usually is not a rematch. GRRM has sprinkled the story with lesser and often barely named characters who would possibly clean the clocks of some of our series’ main characters, I personally could not see Jon Snow beating the guy on the Blackwater who mowed through House Fossoway. In short you have said all the right names, but in many cases you could change the order and I could not really argue except to say ‘but I like Robert more than Jaime cos Warhammer’

    All time Top Fighters

It’s hard to argue with your list, but I believe Hot Pie deserves an honourable mention, armed with barely a scrap of armour or weaponry but a truly fearsome battlecry that puts despair into the hearts of men he held off a ridiculous amount of Lannister soldiers in a small fort, and even survived the encounter

Wheely? Discussing the "breaking of the wheel"

It could work, I heard there will be a sequel and the story involves Davos’ Master plan, he is now in the Red Keep, with access to Qyburns books, all he needs do is find Stannis’ cold preserved body and bring him back from the dead, there is no chance he’d allow a Red Priest to get the credit for his resurrection. After Stannis reassumed control of the Stormlands from a Gendry who died childless, Stannis is free to throw his hat into the mix for election after Bran dies and seemingly for all eternity until he wins, when he does he is King, forever, the wheel is broken, the problem solved. Or to give the Westerosi some credit, Brian dies and his successor is appointed, his successor however has children and he tries to reinstate the old monarchy style, civil war erupts, team election win and change the rules again so that the new King may only serve a term before another must be elected. Until Stannis’ resurrected corpse wins and remains in power forever anyway

    Northmen slaughtering civilians

Both books and show do not hide that the Northmen are as bad as anyone without proper leadership, in fact throughout the war of 5 Kings in the novels we hear of only 2 men who keep their soldiers in hand, Randyll Tarly and Stannis Baratheon

Protagonist suddenly goes crazy in last chapter of epic

I will say that I don’t think it was uncommon for a city that resisted to be brutally sacked, and KL had resisted, they may have thrown down their weapons in the end but they fought back and killed hostages, Tywin would probably have reacted in the same way

Protagonist suddenly goes crazy in last chapter of epic

It’s an outcome I expected with an appalling buildup, they have connected the dots but not really in a way that makes much tangeable sense. I complained about Stannis in S5, how he went from considering burning his bastard nephew whom he had never met to awaken a freaking Dragon, but in no way would sacrifice his daughter, to burning his daughter cos ‘bad weather’ I was told at the time that it didn’t really matter because the outcome was the same as it will be in the books and should get over it Here it is, context does matter, reaching c without really adding a and b makes for a poor story. Like I say, expected outcome, decent delivery, undermines by a poor buildup

Great battle plan! Dubious tactics discussion.

I can see why Bronze Yohn wasn’t seen at all, probably saw the battle plan and thought ‘I am not putting my name on that!’

    Death scene: Theon

Theon made a bee-line for the one guy he knew he had to kill, he knew he was dead at this point, no way out of it, willingly put himself in that position in fact, but he made a charge at the one guy he needed to bring down to save everyone. I feel like in his shoes not many others would have done the same, and nearly all that attempted would be just as dead. The charge itself was a bit silly, obviously never saw Oberyn fight with a spear, I would have thought he would have feinted or something, not given his enemy a full five minutes or whatever channel his move. Still RIP Theon, you were truly one of the great characters
