  1. I just want to know who went to a WorldCon and thought 'this is an event that will do well in a country that outlaws queerness, idolatry and immodest clothing'. That's like 80% of the entire event right there. :p
  2. Hey, don't get me wrong. I love that younger people haven't had the experience that LGBT+ people of my generation did. I'm just sounding a note of caution.
  3. I want to counter all the sunny optimism about the UK by noting that it was in living memory that the government put into law Section 28 (which banned the 'promotion' of homosexuality in schools). Now, since then there has been a wonderful revolution in social attitudes in this area. And yes, even in rural areas, the attitudes of people under 40 and particularly under 20 are tolerant and even supportive of LGBT+ people in general. But among older people of the generation who were in power when the above was made law, it can be quite different, and even among younger people there are still bigots. It only takes a handful of these people to cause grief. And I would say that trans* people are the most likely of the LGBT+ to suffer prejudice in my experience. Remember that bigotry that is suppressed because it's not socially acceptable can still manifest in ways that make life uncomfortable.
  4. I suspect I have an idea what's going on. GDPR places restrictions on transferring personal data outside of the EU, and cookies do just that. It's easy enough to comply (this website does it), but it might be that the Omaha W-H has decided it's not worth the bother for the small amount of EEA traffic it gets.
  5. There's a Scottish politician whose first name is Johann, pronounced Jo-Ann. Is this a variant maybe more commonly found elsewhere?
  6. This is just the old 'marriage is a religious institution' argument, which is historically untrue and a pointless nonsense anyway. The government is no more capable of getting 'out of the marriage business' than it is of abolishing war. Marriage is a government business and so it must be equal.

@Ran: just got redirected to this site. http://babittedwinner.men/?isp=British Telecommunications Plc&td=track.happinessandloves.com&voluumdata=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&clickid=4ffbf7f9-a2fb-4f31-b51b-a8dc4aff376e&zoneid=38265# I'd stepped away from the keyboard for a bit: the browser tab was open to the board and I heard something, came back and it had redirected to that message.

Ran: another example of a video ad pulling me to the foot of the screen. https://gcdn.2mdn.net/videoplayback/id/5b9bcb2c5aa4031f/itag/342/source/doubleclick_dmm/ratebypass/yes/acao/yes/ip/0.0.0.0/ipbits/0/expire/3639039990/sparams/id,itag,source,ratebypass,acao,ip,ipbits,expire/signature/A1F3B716654221C47CF62A8DD3A95CFC730CCC0C.B2CDA47E88A44C9CF454BC56654B9EEC2219969B/key/ck2/file/file.mp4
  9. Ormond: related to Agnes' popularity in Scotland (currently low, it's still seen as old-fashioned, but it may be due for a revival) - do you know that a popular Scottish nickname for women called 'Agnes' was/is 'Senga'?

You're going to need Ran for this one, Ormond: sorry.
  11. [mod] A final reminder: this thread is for rating the show. We're interested in your rating, NOT your opinion of other people's ratings. People are allowed to disagree with you. Respect their right to do so. DON'T call them names because they gave a different rating than you did, don't accuse them of trolling, and don't ask them why they even watch the show. Having spent the last fifteen minute deleting dozens of such posts, my patience is at an end. Don't test it further. [/mod]
  12. [mod] Your regular reminder, people: this thread is to rate the episode, giving your opinion of that particular slice of the show. It's not the thread to give your opinions of people who rated the episode differently than you did. We don't have a thread like that. We're interested in what you thought of the episode: we're not interested in what you think of people who disagree with you. [/mod]
  13. [mod] A little reminder that this thread is for ratings of the episode. Please don't derail it by entering into interpersonal bickering with other users. [/mod]
  14. [mod] A friendly reminder to keep it polite, please. Disagreements are fine, but respect different opinions. [/mod]
  15. As the show goes out, we want to be clear on our policy regarding spoilers for the benefit of all users. We understand that developments in the TV show may or may not turn out to be relevant to the plot of future books. Accordingly, they may or may not be spoilers for future books. Our policy on this is precautionary and is an extension of our existing policy on show/book discussion. Discussion of the show should go in the show forums: this includes discussion of plot points from the series, and whether they tell us anything about the future direction of the books. At the same time we recognise that there are users who are not watching the series and prefer to remain unspoiled. This may or may not prove possible in the long run, but we prefer not to make it any harder. This means that no show spoilers of any kind should be posted in the book forums. No hints, no speculation, nothing. Any breach of that rule will result in a suspension: no excuses and no exceptions.

Sometimes we do. Sometimes we don't. Usually threads are locked for length. There's no point posting an explanation for that. Same with wrong forum threads. We more usually comment if a thread's been closed because it's gone off the rails due to misbehaviour: then, we might post a warning.
  19. [mod] Let's get back to the topic, please. The topic is not ADWD: it's how you rate this episode. [/mod]

    Performance mode

At present the board is in performance mode. This means that certain functions are temporarily disabled to help cope with unusually high traffic. These functions include searching, using 'View New Content' or 'My Content' (as these are functions of search) and viewing other users' profiles. Full functionality will be restored as traffic eases.
  21. [mod] TV show discussion stays in the TV forums, please. [/mod]
  22. New pinned topic for those looking. One simple rule applies and will be rigidly enforced - ONLY legal means of locating or reading sample material may be referenced. No links to copyright-infringing materials, or other advice that may encourage copyright infringement: anyone posting such will have their post deleted and additional measures may be taken against you.
  23. 10 seconds x the number of threads in the approval queue = no notification. Sorry. (It would take rather longer than 10 seconds anyway to provide a full explanation, then you have to factor in people disputing the decision and expecting a reply to that, and so on.)
