  1. @Lord Varys Not only I absolutely support your theory that Aegon was sterile, I believe that was a reason of Aegon's marriage to Rhaenys and not this absurd "one for duty, one for love". Sure, Aegon probably loved his younger sister, but would Visenya be a doormat and allow Aegon to shame her so much? I don't think so. But if their marriage was childless after couple of years, Visenya would relent. And that's why Argillac and Sharra Arryn believed Aegon will set aside his sisters and take his daughter/her to marriage - they knew his wives were barren and they believed he will do like Maegor did - try again with different woman.

    Valyria, A Gender Equal Society?

Ugh... Valyrians could have multiple wives. That doesn't scream "gender equality" to me.

    funny or annoying translation mistakes

Casterly Rock is translated to Russian as "Beavers' Cliff". Don't ask me why. I don't know. It's crazy

    funny or annoying translation mistakes

OMG. There is an absolutely horrible mistake of Russian translation but I am not sure I can explain you why it's so horrible. I mean, the word "seat" Like, Harrenhal is kings' seat, Casterly Rock is Lannisters' seat etc. Russian translator decided to find something cool and ancient-sounding, like, something from 12-13 centuries, something from Middle Ages, words, that are not used in modern Russian. So, they already succeed in this case when they translated "King's Hand" as "Десница короля" - they found very old and cool-sounding word which means "hand" but not so trivial as mere "hand". So, the "seat", They found some very old word - седалище. Seat - is something to sit on, and седалище means something to sit on, all right. But there is a nuance. It means, ahem, behind. Backside. Southern body part. Arse. So, now you see what we can read in Russian translation. Harrenhal is kings' arse. Casterly Rock is Lannisters' buttocks. Driftmark is Velaryons' derriere. Cool-cool. Upd. Actually it's "Beavers' Cliff is Lannisters' buttocks". See below.

Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

Yeah, probably. But you know why I noticed this part? There was a theory about Gods punishing all those scoundrels who wronged Targaryens: Jon Arryn was first to rebel - he died first, Robert died after him, Ned was next, then Hoster Tully, Tywin the last. They betrayed Aerys the Saint (yep, there are people who think Aerys was absolutely right in everything) and they were punished by gods, and all their Houses will be destroyed as well (and in the books they all are on the brink of destruction). Well, TV-series gods definitely play for other team. Only those Houses who didn't support Bobby B are destroyed. Tough titties Disclaimer - I am kidding. I don't believe any of those things

Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

Something interesting I just noticed: three Great Houses were obliterated by the show. Targaryens, Tyrells and Martells. Well, we don't know new Dornish Prince's name but I suspect he is not Martell, it would be said so if he was. Tyrells and Martells were only Great Houses who openly sided with Targaryens during Robert's Rebellion.

Master thread on what the Show means for the book plot

Well, probably it will mean there will be more than 2 books. I mean, we need to see: Dany getting Essos to order Stannis reaching Winterfell Winterfell Battle Stannis going back to the Wall Stannis burning Shireen Jon's resurrection Jon going back to Winterfell Boltons dying Euron doing whatever shit he planned Aegon doing whatever shit he planned Dornish girls doing whatever shit Doran planned Sansa doing whatever shit Petyr planned Shit happens to Margaery and Tyrells Arya getting bakc to Westeros Deny getting back to Westeros Somebody deal with Freys Somebody deals with Cersei Somebody deals with Others Bran coming back from the cave Bran becoming a king Everybody gets some conclusion There are more action than it happened in 5 books before. I mean, Stannis was crawling to Winterfell for 1.5 books already. Given current pace GRRM will need 10 new books to finalize all this shit
  8. This thread was insired by "My biggest what if" cause yep, this is my biggest what if - Robert wouldn't proclaim himself the King of Seven Kingdoms, but for all of three of rebels - Jon, Ned and Robert to proclaim independence of their lands. What if they proposed to Tywin, Hoster, Mace and Quellon to join their cause as new kings of West,Rivers, Reach, Iron Islands? that would be interesting I think. Of course, I suppose Dorne would stick to Targaryens anyway, as far as Elia's son's legacy is secured and not compromised (yes, I am looking on your second totally legit wife, Rhaegar). But what do you think? Would other grandlords deny a chance for their own crowns? What would happen next? You know, I lived through USSR collapse (ok, I was a mere child) so this would be very, ahem, interesting times ahead. Would somebody within Reach rebel? Will somebody in Stormlands or Reverlands assume they have more rights to their respective crowns than Baratheons and Tullys? What would Iron Islanders do? How would Targeryen plan to bring them back into one kingdom again?
  9. Actually yes. Prior to the show Jon Snow was my favourite character. By the season 4 I started rooting for Alliser Thorne and I prayed for Jon to stay dead, in books as well. I really-really-really dislike the way Kit Harrington played Jon. He irritated me so much, ugh.

Why didn't Lyanna write to Eddard?

How would it help? "hey ned and bobby, stop freting, i am totally not abducted, just answering a booty call from married prince like a common ho, will be back when we are done xoxo your gurl lya. ps - sorry about dad and bran"? - yeah, that would soothe everybody for sure.

GRRM's (Brief) Thoughts on the Final Episode

George was not talking about sequel. It has nothing to do with sequels or fanfiction (sorry, that what this Ripley's book was - glorified "fix it all" fanfiction) He was talking about book versus movie. In books Scarlett had 3 kids. In movie she had only 1 daughter. This is what the Scarlett kids reference is about, as George already used it before (many times) when he talked about books vs adaptation.

    The third twist

So, George confirmed in his blog that D&D knew who Jon's mother was, and they were right. So, this is soooo not holy shit moment, more like "yawn" moment for them.

GRRM's (Brief) Thoughts on the Final Episode

Seriously, this "Scarlett's kids" line annoys me to no end. Scarlett's elder kids meant nothing for her story. She could have no kids before Bonnie, she could have ten kids before Bonnie - only Bonnie was important for her and for the story (and story's ending). Wade and Ella add to the story less than effing horse which took her to Tarah.

[Book Spoilers] R+L=J, A+J=T and other theories on HBO V.4

Ah. Thanks. I've heard about this theory but never took it seriously, probably that's why I didn't recognize it.

    Third "Wow" moment

Do you think D&D will ever reveal what this moment is? Just to remind you: 1st moment was when Stannis burnt his daughter on stake, second was about Hodor origins. Third to happen "in the very end". So, either we've already seen this moment before, and D&D just didn't reveal it was it, either they decided to scrap this thing at all or we will see it in the next episode. I am not to speculate what this moment will be. I want to ask you if you want them to reveal "this was it". I mean, it will be major spoiler for the books. Stannis burning his daughter - yeah, spoiler, but we can live with it. Hold the Door - ok, that's smart, but it's not that big. Something from the ending - nah, I don't wanna know it. Keep your knowledge to yourselves, D&D. Do your thing, but don't tell us "this shit is totally book ending" - no, shut up. I cannot hear you.
  18. DanaKz

    The third twist

As far as I remember, D&D knew this fan theory well, and this was discussed with Martin during one of their first talks. Something like GRRM asked them do they know who is Jon's mother, and D&Ds said something like "yeah, we think so and so" and GRRM just smiled. By this time R+L=J thread was already pinned on ASOIAF forum, I think. So, nah. It wouldn't be big deal for them.
  19. Lyanna was Brandon's little baby sister, good, pure, saint, like all baby sisters are for their big brothers. Even if Lyanna left a letter saying: "I am running away with Rhaegar because he is cute and lovely!!!111oneoneone" Brandon would think adult married Rhaegar brainwashed her and abducted her, forsed his saint baby sister to write this lying letter. He would never believe his smart, noble, faithful baby sister would run away with married father of two. So, no. Brandon didn't need any lying Littlefingers to believe Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna. Littlefinger, lord Whent, Rickard Stark or even Holy Mother Above herself might say to Brandon it was Lyanna who took away Rhaegar on swordpoint, Brandon would think it was married adult rapist Rhaegar who kidnapped her.
  20. Littlefinger was 15 and he has been sent back to Fingers after being wounded by Brandon on the duel.

    The ASOIAF wiki thread

Ok... So, Baela and Raena are Prince Daemon's daughters and they are called "ladies". Prince Daemon is king's younger brother. So, does it mean king's younger brother's children are not princes and princesses? Viserys is Aegon III's younger brother. But his second son Aemon is called "new prince" (though Aemon and Aegon are never called "prince Aegon or prince Aemon in the book"). So, let's speculate: when kids are current king's grandchildren via sons they are princes no matter what (Baelon's sons, Maekar's sons during Hedge Knight) but if kids are born when they are king's nephews and nieces, they are lords and ladies? I looked into British system thru Wikipedia: So, I suppose Westeros is using George I's system.
  22. Probably it's like Maegor's case? They married by parents decree (for duty), but Aegon always loved his younger sister (see Jaehaerys-Alysanne, Baelon-Alyssa, Jaehaerys-Shaera, always younger sister never) leaving older brother's side), Aegon and Visneya didn't have children and Aegon married Rhaenys for kids (and for love).

hopes dashed by Fire and Blood

Dragons? This shit will be covered in next book, I don't doubt it. We have a number of unanswered questions which will never be answered at all: What happened during Century of Blood? Why Aegon and his sisters didn't have kids before Aenys? What was in Dornish Letter? What was the matter with Maegor's kids? How did Maegor die?
  24. Ronnel's family and their death by Moon Door was mentioned during "Sons of dragon" reading several years ago. I remember we speculated if it caused bad blood with North as Ronnel's wife was Stark. But when "Sons" were printed there were no mention of Ronnel's family.

    Nymor's letter to Aegon

Ok, on serious note. We will never find out what was in this letter - F&B was our last hope to do it. So we can only speculate. My speculations: Dornishmen did torture Rhaenys and they got something out of her. Some very deep and troubling secret, probably something which only Targaryens knew: probably prophecy, maybe some dragon riders' biology secret, Valyria's Doom, something really damning for Targs. Or probably they knew Aegon is sterile/impotent though I doubt Aegon would draw back because of that - yes, that would be unpleasant but Aegon could brush it aside as a rumor. (But I believe in sterile!Aegon theory BTW. I think this is was a reason for Aegon to marry Rhaenys after Visenya. "One for duty, one for love" is just a propaganda, I presume he took second wife for the same reason as Maegor did - to conceive a child. Of course it just a theory and speculation)
