  1. I personally grew to enjoy those cheesy murals on the first three paperbacks. I remember being extremely disappointed at the bookstore when I bought AFfC. The bird drawing on a red background looked so bland. Why not stay with the original cover artist, Stephen Youll?
  2. As Ms. Teng told me several years ago, “If you follow the Chinese men’s national team, all you’ll get is disappointment.”
  3. I hope everyone is watching this Nuggets - 76ers game.
  4. Recently, a trailer was released for season 2, which will start on Feb 8th.
  5. I was extra busy this semester, so I'm really looking forward to a slow-placed, stress-free winter break, which started today.
  6. Mine were Legends & Lattes (Travis Baldree) and Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Robin Sloan).
  7. Point taken. I’ll continue enjoying good storytelling and good acting, and continue hoping that the lives of Paige Jennings, Henry Jennings, Sandra Beeman, and Matthew Beeman don’t become overly damaged by this “secret war”. Also, I’m not necessarily looking for a hero/good guy, but I do need at least one main character that’s likeable and/or redeemable. If a show is just horrible people being horrible to each other, then that’s not something I personally want to watch. Does anyone watch a sporting event solely to see a top-quality athletic performance without caring about the final result? In a way, I feel like that’s what I’m being asked to do.
  8. I’ve read a lot of good things here about The Americans, so I decided to finally watch it. I’ve watched the first 10 episodes. It’s good storytelling, but it’s not necessarily fun to watch. It’s hard to find someone to root for in this secret war. Currently, I’m just hoping that the Jennings family re-unites and stays unified.
  9. I just finished Mr Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan and its prequel, a short story called Ajax Penumbra 1969. I think that the best way to describe the plot is that someone took The Da Vinci Code and rewrote it for book lovers. Not sure what to read next, but since I started this year with Legends & Lattes, I think I’ll start next year with Bookshops & Bonedust.
  10. I just finished season 2 of Heels. It was an interesting drama. But, the final scene didn’t make me want to watch a 3rd season, which is fine as I now see that the series was canceled one day after the season finale aired.
  11. Just finished season 2 of Winning Time, so I have to start by saying, Fuck Boston! The opening scene of episode 1 was exhilarating. If Riley’s speech doesn’t make you want to suit up and play competitive sport, then you’re not human. It’s too bad that the series was cancelled. It needs a season 3 to complete the Showtime story. In its place, I watched Celtics/Lakers: Best of Enemies, the ESPN 30 for 30 docuseries. Before watching Winning Time, I had never heard of Paul Westhead and “the system”. I was surprised to read the notes at the end. He later coached Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble at Loyola Marymount, so sometime this week I need to watch Guru of Go, another ESPN 30 for 30 documentary.
  12. I decided to wait on Reacher. I’d rather binge-watch the whole season in January than watch it week-to-week. Instead, I watched seasons 1b and 2a of Quantum Leap (2022). Before that, I watched season 2 of SurrealEstate. Currently, I’m watching Found. I don’t really care about the search for the missing person that happens in each episode, but I’m intrigued by the character development and character interactions. For network television, the main character is very morally gray.
  13. Currently, I'm rereading Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan and just noticed that he has a new book called Moonbound. The publication date is June 11. Also, Dennis E. Taylor expects Bobiverse 5 to be published in January or February. Is it normal for a book not to have a title this close to publication?
  14. I'm planning to watch Reacher this weekend, or at least some of it. Lombardozzi was also on Tulsa King recently.
  15. We had a snow storm (relatively speaking) yesterday evening. City government asked all the schools to do online lessons today.
  16. Ghostdrift (The Finder Chronicles Book 4) by Suzanne Palmer Publication date, May 28
  17. Somewhat recently, I finished the third and final novel in Rachel Aaron's DFZ series. (DFZ stands for Detroit Free Zone.) I then tried Aaron's By a Silver Thread. I had to put this one aside for a while. It says that it's set in the DFZ, but nothing about it resembles the DFZ series. Also, I don't really care about the missing person that the main character is trying to find. I also read To Sail Beyond the Botnet, novelette #3 in the Bot 9 series by Suzanne Palmer. I’m currently trying Beacon 23 by Hugh Howey. I'm half way through it, and it's a bit of a slog so far.
  18. Recently, I rewatched seasons 1 & 2 of Upload and am caught up with season 3. Even though I miss the humor from season 1, it's still one of the best shows out there. The world building is very interesting. The acting and character interactions are fun to watch. It's the only show that has love triangles that don't make groan.
  19. In the MLS, I enjoyed following St Louis City SC this season. The city had been trying to get a pro football/soccer team for at least 15 years, and now they finally have one. At the beginning of the season, the pundits predicted that they would finish at the bottom of the table. Instead, they won first place in the west division. Even though they lost their last 4 games and got knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, they had a great season overall.
  20. Listen to that crowd cheer for that man-baby. What a cult of personality. If he was on your team, you loved him. If his team was your rival, you loved to hate him.
  21. Nice surprise for me too. This is one of my favorites. Also, surprised that this season is being released week-to-week. The first 2 seasons were bingeable. I'll have to rewatch them then start S3.
