Acrophobia 32 - Signs: FINAL: SWMBO WINS!!!

Well, yeah! I genuinely think some topics suit certain people more than others and I was lucky enough to benefit from enjoying certain types of topic that have come up a number of times. See, I can be humbler than anyone

To be honest, I'm not keen on the situations like you provided in the first round but I quite like the idea of hypothetical scenarios in opposition to actual book stuff. Like, if they ran a particular business or ran for political office. Or a slogan for a hypothetical revolution or movement. I think that's where the signs idea has legs. But then maybe it'd be good for competition if the topic doesn't inspire me or the Bird.
  3. Isn't it commonly known as Winterhell nowadays? And can this train be caught from a secret platform at King's Cross? Or is that a bit cliché nowadays?

Football - To Russia with Löw

Agree with all of that. I can see what he was trying to get at in his explanation but if he thinks he is being clever he's proving himself as foolish as it is claimed. But as you suggest, his personal folly is his own business.
  5. In this heat, iced! We Brits tend to brew black tea as bitter as possible and then add milk to soften the bitterness. The vast majority on this island would have it no other way and view any other way as some form of monstrous evil. As I am not fond of milk I tend towards the rebellious few that sees the sense in brewing with water off the boil to avoid the bitterness that the milk is basically used to offset. Good quality tea leaves are a must! Nothing beats a well made cup of silver needle white tea, especially in summer. Expensive though. Also, pu-erh is wonderful as an after-meal drink on a chilly December evening, just before moving on to the single malt scotch (as you do).

First: #3 Second: #4 Third: #2 Struggling for inspiration here. Edited to add: Oh hey, if you haven't checked out my new proper recordings of The Dornishman's Wife and The Last of the Giants, they are linked in my signature and in the 'fan made songs' thread in the "Objects of Ice and Fire" section under Related Projects.

Ah okay.. Yeah you've thrown me right off. It's completely different to what I was expecting. Not to worry. I just need to readjust my mindset.

To be honest, I'm somewhat fuzzy about the assignment and therefore very unsure how to approach it. Is there some specific intent behind the sign or are we given free reign to make it about anything?

Personally, I'd choose Pickford but it's very much up for grabs. Dier isn't the best but England has a dearth of top quality in genuinely defensive midfield options.

Dude, I wasn't saying otherwise, just contributing to the discussion by suggesting a possible explanation for his fall from grace. I'm a City season ticket holder for the last 20 years so I have a lot of love for Joe Hart. I've watched him deliver some of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen.

    Football: CLeaning up

It had started way before then. There's a rumour that he has a longstanding back problem which can't be sorted out and has been progressively getting worse over the last 5 years. It is alleged to be the reason he had such a sudden and clear issue with shots aimed to his left side, particularly low ones, which hadn't been obvious previously. It's right that he isn't in the squad. He'd be no use even as a 2nd or 3rd choice at the moment.

Are you stubbornly not counting my "thanks" on the other post? I refuse on principle to deliver a reaction to a post that demands a reaction.

    Acrophobia 31 The End

I do love this game. Thanks for the votes and the words. H'H, you will finish top again soon I have no doubt. FB, we all know you will Castellan, thank you so much for the effort you have put into hosting two games back-to-back. I really appreciate it And well played everyone. I thought the standard was great maybe apart from just one round, which is impressive going I might be able to host in the next week or so. Or I could pledge to do so after Bran, if he is still interested?

    Acrophobia 31 The End

First: 3. Saves another princess, gets unwanted elevation. Second: 1. Silence and prayer get uninteresting eventually. Third: 2. Sparrows' "attorney", Prosecutor Gravedigger. UnGregor's enemy. Fourth: 6. Stranger awaits “priest”, granting – ultimately – Elysium. I am willing to change my mind if further entries come in.

    The Game

I think I failed to explain what I meant. There are different levels of obfuscation. It can be difficult to see where the line between acceptable and unacceptable obfuscation resides, particularly from the author and host's perspective from which they already know the answer. I think we sometimes go over that line searching for great clue authorship. I would claim that authoring with an eye to obfuscation doesn't make for the best clue-making. Looking for a more confusing synonym doesn't improve a clue. The best clues come from a great idea that fits well in the letters of the given acronym. I do strongly believe that the intended meaning of a word in the clue should be easily researchable. It was a good clue, perhaps a tad easy but nearly all in this round were fairly easy IMO. I don't think the overall standard of clues in this round was great but I thought yours stood out alongside #10 and the voting reflects that. Anyway, congratulations to all players on a fascinating game Thanks to my partner for being so brilliant, our long inebriated conversations into the dead of night (for me anyway) will be remembered always And thanks to shadow for hosting it for us, befuddling us to the point of near-madness

Yes but you're related, so that works in the broad context of my understanding of it and the searchable definitions that it can be used as an affectionate term for a loved one. My only real point is that if an intended meaning of a word in a clue is not reasonably searchable, it should not be used in such a way, especially given we have had many players over the years for whom English is not a first language so they rely on internet definitions.

    The Game

The trouble is, the simple fact that it could have used "baby" means that it seems like a pointless obfuscation. Like, had it read baby I would have got it. I considered the Oberyn story in question and dismissed it precisely because of the term. Even as Cersei's brother, it falls - IMO - on the basis that every reliable definition suggests affection for the recipient of the term. Plus it would seem messy to use an object's perspective within a subject's paraphrasing. This is why it feels like a deliberate obfuscation. i'm not saying it was deliberate, only that any term used in this game should be using an easily searchable definition from a reliable source. It makes it tougher to take given our brilliant host was so tough on us, requesting many alterations and versions to my clue. I think mine ended up extremely easy. But I know how hard it is to host and I wanted to be compliant to what was asked of me.

    The Game

Thank you shadow for hosting a wonderfully bonkers game. I admire your staunch defence of the clues, even if I disagree with the defence of the 4th clue. But for the record I don't think it is a bad clue. Just one bad word choice that blinded me to the answer, so it feels like a deliberate obfuscation. It should have just used "baby" (but these things happen).
