    Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance v. 3.0

Try The Immortals by Joanna Max Brodsky. The blurb: "Manhattan has many secrets. Some are older than the city itself. The city sleeps. Selene DiSilva walks her dog along the banks of the Hudson. She is alone -- just the way she likes it. She doesn't believe in friends, and she doesn't speak to her family. Most of them are simply too dangerous. In the predawn calm, Selene finds the body of a young woman washed ashore, gruesomely mutilated and wreathed in laurel. Her ancient rage returns. And so does the memory of a promise she made long ago -- when her name was Artemis."

I've read it. It felt differently to me, but I respect that others have their own vibes. There are several short novellas about The Free that will be appearing soon in the UK. Three have been announced so far—A Tale of the Free: Corsair (Mar 1); A Tale of the Free: Exile (Jun 7); A Tale of the Free: Tyrant (Sep 6). I've seen no confirmation yet about an American release for these.

You read fast! But that's sad to hear. I'm a big Chris Willrich fan.

The Books That Have Just Come Out: New Release Thread

This has been the biggest single day that I can recall for books that I had pre-ordered. I received an octet of new fantasy releases: The Unnoticeables by Robert Brockway Splintered by Jamie Schultz Queen of Fire by Anthony Ryan A Murder of Mages by Marshall Ryan Maresca The Shores of Spain by J. Kathleen Cheney The Price of Valor by Django Wexler Shower of Stones by Zachary Jernigan The Chart of Tomorrows by Chris Willrich I am expecting all of these to be great reads, except maybe for Queen of Fire. I've seen too many reviews expressing disappointment; I hope they are wrong about the book's quality.

My Kindle received two books published today (July 2). Darkhaven by A.F.E. Smith: "Ayla Nightshade never wanted to rule Darkhaven. But her half-brother Myrren — true heir to the throne — hasn’t inherited their family gift, forcing her to take his place. When this gift leads to Ayla being accused of killing her father, Myrren is the only one to believe her innocent. Does something more sinister than the power to shapeshift lie at the heart of the Nightshade family line? Now on the run, Ayla must fight to clear her name if she is ever to wear the crown she never wanted and be allowed to return to the home she has always loved." Iron and Blood by Gail Z. Martin and Larry N. Martin: "New Pittsburgh, 1898 — a crucible of invention and intrigue. Born from the ashes of devastating fire, flood and earthquake, the city is ruled by the shadow government of The Oligarchy. In the swarming streets, people of a hundred nations drudge to feed the engines of progress, while in the abandoned tunnels beneath the city, supernatural creatures hide from the light, emerging only to feed. Jake Desmet and Rick Brand travel the world to secure treasures and unusual items for the collections of wealthy patrons, accompanied by Jake’s cousin, Veronique LeClerque. But when their latest commission leads to Jake’s father’s murder, the three friends are drawn into a conspiracy where dark magic, industrial sabotage and the monsters that prey on the night will ultimately threaten not just New Pittsburgh, but the whole world."

Today I received my pre-ordered Kindle editions of three fantasy debuts: Beyond Redemption by Michael R. Fletcher, The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins, and The War Against the Assholes by Sam Munson. All appear to be suitably very dark (at least initially), and have received mostly good early reviews. My grimdark reading addiction is beyond redemption and charring my soul with a backlog library that I am waging a losing war against. But I am a happy victim.

That doesn't surprise me. It's true of several books/series/authors that I think are great. For what it's worth, the second book in the series, Truth and Fear, managed to garner some really good reviews on Amazon.

Today my Kindle received five pre-ordered June 2 fantasy releases: The Liar's Key by Mark Lawrence, Storm and Steel by Jon Sprunk, The Shadow Revolution: Crown & Key by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith, Knight's Shadow by Sebastien de Castell, and Iron and Blood: Part II of the Saga of the Redeemed by Auston Habershaw. I also purchased for my Kindle a novel that was released on May 26 but had been overlooked by me: The Iron Ship by K.M. McKinley. This is the first book of the new series The Gates of the World, which appears to be a sprawling epic that blends fantasy with other genres in a way that lured me into buying it.

Got Veiled Empire by Nathan Garrison yesterday (May 26): The book's description reads: "The Empire is Shrouded, not only by the barrier that covers the land, but by the lies and oppression of the mierothi regime. Magic is the privilege of the elite, and the people of this shadowed country have forgotten what it means to hope under their rule. But there are some who would resist, with plans put into motion millennia before. For returned to the Empire is a valynkar, servant of the god of light, and with him come the strength and cunning that could tip the scales to end the Emperor's reign. He has gathered a group of heroes ready to ignite the flame of rebellion and fight against the dark power that has ruled for nearly two thousand years. A power that has champions of its own. Nathan Garrison's Veiled Empire throws a mythical land into chaos, with races long thought forgotten, and magics only just discovered. Steel and sorcery clash as brave souls vie for freedom and control in this astonishing debut novel."
